Gameloft has been teasing and teasing Modern Combat 5 for months on end now. They've talked about its multiplayer, its graphics, its continued online connectivity, they've streamed the game, they've done everything but say when it's releasing. And now we have an official release date: July 24th.

Modern Combat 5 Lobby

Yes, finally, the plan is for the game to release in two weeks. Price will be $6.99 with no in-app purchases. iOS and Android versions will launch simultaneously, but not the Windows Phone version. They'll have to wait a bit longer.

With the game so close with a fixed date now, it is as good a time as any to catch up to our previous coverage of the game:

  • hourglass

Such a great looking game. It's a shame that it always has to be online.

    • nekkedsnake

Agreed. Sad for those with spotty ISP and subway commutes.

  • Speedster117

I'm excited, no in app purchases is exciting. The always online function is a bummer but I'll get over it.

    • scrotally

No IAP's is a breath of fresh air. Makes me think Ahhh this is a game and not a slot machine.

  • scrotally

I hope they do GC achievements like they did with the last Asphalt game.

    • DuckyShot

Possibly because in MC5 you can now login with GameCenter

    • Rip73

Gamecenter integration, including achievements, is built in to it.

  • xdynamiicxios

Again why would anyone buy a "online"multiplayer base game for offline play? Can't wait to own everyone like in mc4 again

    • Jake7905

For the single player content. Last time I checked, this wasn't a "multiplayer only" game.

      • xdynamiicxios

It should be, that would add better online play, like voice chat, better maps.

      • marcanthony0313

They said that voice chat wasn't something they really wanted, but that the people seem to, so they might add it in an update

  • Skyfluks

    Can't wait! =D

  • JCho133

Wow, can't believe they chose that release date. They're so lazy.

    • JohnTheKiller_

      Yeah, and liners

  • DuckyShot

    These next two weeks are gonna feel long ;_;

  • DuckyShot

I hope there are rag doll physics 'cause I just wanna blast people with a shotgun :D

    • Kane

Just make sure you don't act that out in reality..

      • the_rebel14

        Aw... Ok.

    • Rip73

      There is.

    • DeadlySkittles

      Ducky can we game share?

  • worldcitizen1919

Official release date is 'June 24th'?????

    • Themostunclean

In an effort to implement a more invasive and annoying timer, Gameloft accidentally invented time travel. If you don't pay up, you're doomed to repeat the same 2 weeks over and over again.

  • MasterEx

    Title says july 24th
But article says june 24th i know its just aminor thing but just wanted to let u know

  • yetanotherapp

Well, it's a shame, played them since number 2 but the only wifi access we have is a 'mifi' dongle so internet is limited. Gonna have to pass on this one....thanks a lot gameloft (sarcasm)

  • PresidentZer0

And why the hell,is there no controller support? It's not like that it's hard to do...

    • Themostunclean

If I has to guess, I'd say it was the last thing on their list. Releasing it across platforms means we don't get a lot of ios specific features like MFi support. Wouldn't be surprised if it got patched in with the first or second update so just be patient.

      • PresidentZer0

Like they patched it for the other games? What do you mean by multiplatform? It's android and ios. Android does have controller support. It's just a simple API for mfi controllers...

      • Themostunclean

Just saying it's low on their list of priorities. The fewer platform specific things they have to implement (eVen a simple controller API) the faster it's released. I know it's not THAT difficult, but adoption rate for controllers is extremely low and this is Gameloft we're talking about- their priority is to have a game making money ASAP.

And they have patched in controller support with a number of their titles. Some of which had been out for quite a while. Gangstar Vegas is the only one that comes to mind but there are several others.

      • PresidentZer0

Yes. It there isn't really a game that got controller support where it's really a plus. Good games for controller support would be games like modern combat series, nova series, six guns, sacred odyssey.... I know it's mad fingers and not game loft but why in the world did they update the single player shadow gun with controller support but not the multiplayer one??

      • Themostunclean

I know, it's really sporadic how they deal with these controllers. It can be frustrating but hopefully in time we'll see wider adoption.

    • Tommmy

Probably gonna be a separate IAP crap.

      • Rip73

        No, it won't.
        It's simply not integrated yet.
It will come in an update.

      • XboxOne

        Don't go assuming crap!

    • B30

'Cause it's a mobile game, and most people don't care about controllers for mobile games.

    • http://www.gameloft.com/ Ryan

We've talked about this a lot and I'm fairly certain I've posted about it in the MC5 Upcoming thread: The Devs are looking into adding it with an update to the game. They had other features they wanted to iron out and make sure they worked before adding some other things into the launch version of the game.

    • doYouSeeMeNow

I had been really hoping this game would release with controller support & was super disappointed when it was sounded off that it wont. I upgraded from an iPad2 to an iPad Air just so I could enjoy the more highend games with a proper controller without jailbreaking. Those games are so few & far between still. I was really looking forward to this game until they pulled the controller support from the features list. I for one would have spent well over 2 times as much on apps this month (gladly) if there was more controller support for the games I like to play.. and not just the retro style games that seem to be adopting it much faster.

  • Jake7905

Well, I can't say I'm thrilled with the "online only" catch, but no IAP in a big name game, by a big name company, is a very big deal indeed.

  • TheGrimCreeper

    Tay.

  • TheGrimCreeper

    Yay.

  • PresidentZer0

Did they specifically say there will be no iap in multiplayer? Maybe they meant single player only..

    • Rip73

No iap in the "game" which covers both multiplayer and campaign.

    • http://www.gameloft.com/ Ryan

No IAPs in the game (both SP and MP).

  • speedyph
  • Chq

    24th july? Too late.

    • greatnoob

Nice but some of us (me) are happy being paid 7.50 an hour.

      • Stormourner

        this spammer is getting annoying

      • greatnoob

        But I'm a human being!

    • DuckyShot

Well Thelma is an idiot :)

      • Stormourner

  • Ultima12

    Woot!!! Finally!!

  • Killerluffy246

Haha , $7 with internet connection ? Kiss my ass if u want me to buy ..

    • DuckyShot

      And no iAP.....

  • Firedog5698

Did they show multiplayer gameplay yet

  • epik5

I will totally hope for a game like this to survive on the ios 7 ipod touch 5g, ios 7 gave people problems with the performance. Like it started lagging me on mc4,nova 3, and still didnt lag on wild blood

    • Superslippy

Those games are lagging for you because the new OS uses more ram which means your games have less ram available.

  • F*** dan

Of you guys play on a phone online is not a problem

  • StarViruZ

Which devices will be compatible to play? I have the iPad mini non-retina

  • stolenlogic

I'll believe it when I'm downloading it.
I've seen this date shit since LAST YEAR.

  • Choklatstallion

Omg people keep complaining about it always being online! Just be happy that it reduces hackers significantly and there are no in app purchases. Plus, I want to play this in the comfort of my home not in no damn subway on the way to work!

    • Shifaan

I agree with you mate, but the truth is that there is no stopping hackers. They'll always find a way through.

  • cobioma23

Yess the long awaited released game

  • pinchez

I will buy this and any other decent game that doesn't have iAPS :)

    • Kenan2000

Then buy monster hunter freedom unite.

  • Choklatstallion

Lol who wants to bet they'll delay it again

    • Shifaan

Hmm that's a tough call..... You can'tknow Gameloft.......

    • Shifaan

*You can't predict Gameloft. Remember the horrid delay for when they couldn't get The Amazing Spiderman 2 up quickly enough? I think it was 4-6 hours late of its release time.
