If you’ve been an avid Mac and PC gamer for a while, it’s very possible that you’ve enjoyed a game from Spiderweb Software at some point over the past two decades. Their brand of unabashedly old-school RPGs has always focused less on sound and visuals and more on story and pure gameplay. Because of this, they’ve grown to have a strong following of fans, despite their titles being quite niche.
In 2011, Spiderweb created a new RPG series called Avadon, and for the first time graced the iPad in addition to Mac and PC with the inaugural entry Avadon: The Black Fortress HD ($9.99). Avadon aimed to be a more approachable game than that of Spiderweb’s previous offerings, with a more linear path that made it harder to get lost or stumble onto a section that your party wasn’t prepared for. Basically it made it harder to accidentally screw yourself over, and it worked–Avadon:The Black Fortress HD was and is one of the strongest and deepest RPG experiences you can have on the iPad.
Avadon has been planned out as a trilogy, and this past October the second entry in the series, Avadon 2: The Corruption landed on Mac and PC. Today, Spiderweb Software has sent word that Avadon 2 is ready to come to the iPad as well, with a release date set for February 28th. Here’s the trailer from the desktop version.
If you’re already a fan of Spiderweb’s games, then chances are you’re already excited for the news of Avadon 2 coming to iPad. However, if you’re new to Spiderweb but enjoy old-school style RPGs, then definitely check out the first Avadon to see what you’re missing. If you’re hesitant to drop the dough though, I’d recommend checking out the trial versions on Mac and PC first. If it’s your cup of tea, I can easily recommend the full version of Avadon on iPad, or if you’re looking for something a little more open-world, their other iOS releases Avernum: Escape from the Pit HD ($9.99) or Avernum 6 ($6.99) are worth a look as well. We’ll let you know as soon as Avadon 2 is available for iPad at the end of February.
