Yesterday we posted our close look at the excellent RPG Chaos Rings [App Store], an iPhone exclusive and the latest from Square Enix. In celebration of the release of this new title, the studio today began a two week sale on all of their games.

  • Trogador

Awesome! Now I can finally pick up FF1.

All of their games... except Chaos Rings.

    • Deewin

at least they didn't pull off an EA and falsey claim that a regularly priced 14.99 game is on sale for 12.99 as a reward to early adopters.

      • mike

"falsely claim"?? I believe the word you're looking for is 'lie'

I've never understood these launch sales. Wouldn't you be competing against your newly released product if it is not part of the sale?

    • Tkun

I've been wondering that too. It doesn't make much sense. My guess is it's because it brings attention to the company, and therefore the game? I dunno. It's definitely not bad for the consumer I know that much. :P

LOL Song Summoner is still costing $8?!? That is by far the worst of all the games in this list, and still most expensive (outside of the new product that also has too little gameplay for the price).

What's the game in the lower left corner of the screenshot montage? thanks.

    • Noman

Song summoner encore. I enjoyed it, but it seems I am in the minority there.

I want to buy both of the final fantasy's so bad but I refuse to pay until they add a 'auto attack' or refine the controls. Having to target every time is such a chore. They update it and I'll pay.

    • MisterDrgn

I've been playing through ff1 on the iPhone, and yes, an auto-attack would be sooo nice.

    • Zastro

How about they just add a 'win game' button too?

If you are too lazy to actually play an RPG, I suggest you try something else instead. Sleep perhaps.

Got $20 to spare - any recommendations?

    • Xthz

Chaos Ring , Must Play/Buy! Nice game but abit short , i finished it in 3hour :/

      • Chinito77

Chaos Ring and FF1 (They lowered the volume on the effects but I'd like it a tad bit lower).

      • Noman

Did you play through the extended ending? How about with all the different pairs to unlock the final scene? There is a lot more than just one playthrough in that game, easily 15-20 hours of gameplay for people who aren't trying to beat it as quickly as possible.

I have some credit in my account, so I'm considering picking up FF1. HOWEVER, now that I have an iPad, I feel like waiting for iPad versions. I suppose this feeling will wear off, but I hardly feel like spending money on games for that tiny, tiny screen is worth it anymore!

  • dumas1000

This games are all bad and, even at SE's supposed sale prices, are still overpriced.

    • LKR

FF is bad? Surely you jest.

      • HawkEye

The game itself is not "bad" per say, but the controls at the moment are kind of a pain, and the targeting gets tiresome after a while. I took it off my iPhone in hopes of an update to make space for Chaos Rings, which has a really great joystick implementation. Hopefully they'll find a way to bring that over to the Final Fantasy games.

      • Kewldewd

Face it, FF1 is tedious, dated grindfest that should have been put to rest a long time ago.

      • http://www.stormchild.net Stormchild

The original game is a classic. Unfortunately they did a very sloppy and poor job on the port, so the iPhone version sucks. The interface is terrible (e.g. nobody can find the world map without asking how to get to it), text is ugly and hard to read, and that bloody bleep is still way too loud even after the update. I find it unplayable.

        Pity.

      • Kewldewd

it's a classic, yes, but it hasn't aged too well. the battle and character development systems are shallow, the story is virtually non-existent, and things like forced grinding and vague directions on where to go only serve to artificially pad out the game's length.

i realize much of this was necessary on the nes in 1987 due to hardware constraints, but by today's standards it's just frustrating and tedious

i think the FF we need to see remade on the idevices is the 4th one, because that's really the game that started JRPGs as we know them today, being story-based and all. the first three are relics are relics of the past that, from today's standpoint, are historically interesting but not a lot of fun to play.

    • Creole

Have you ever once said anything positive on Toucharcade? You seem to have something to whine about in just about every article

      • Jeff

better than someone who is always happy about everything.

      • mike

        @Jeff...

And those are the only two options available, yes?

Either a constant whinge, or someone who's high on Ecstasy?

Whining is never cool. Either post legitimate questions or bugger off.

And for God's sakes, don't whine about the cost of these games... most of them can be bought with a single hour's work's wages, and you can play them for 20-30hrs. How cheap can you be?

    • Chinito77

Just put a lid on it already!!! Are you really going to whine about a game made over a decade ago? Some people like to just take 10 mins and do nothing but level up/grind while waiting for a Dr's appt, bus/train ride, a meeting, or before going to sleep. It's a mobile game meant to be played in spurts so quit comparing it to a console game.

Lastly, will we ever stop hearing about how a $15 iPhone game is too expensive? You spend that kind of money eating out during a day or two, buying that useless pack of cigarettes, going to watch a bad movie in the theater. How cheap can people be these days without giving any thought to what developers go through to make a game?

I bought FF II a few weeks ago. I think it was on sale then too. I find I just don't play it much. That is I don't think it aged very well. Just not compelling. Chaos Rings looks cool.

I'm hanging on for the iPad editions if they ever come out. I played FF2 on the SNES, the DS and my iPhone but a bigger screen is always better :)

    • Anonymous

Just FYI, this is a different FF2. The game that was released as "Final Fantasy II" on the SNES in the US is actually the 4th one.
