Cave Releases Video of Upcoming Shooter ‘DeathSmiles’

TouchArcade Rating:

“Once more, the angels descend upon Gilverado…"

On Friday we reported that Cave announced that their 2007 arcade danmaku / bullet hell shooter DeathSmiles, which made its way to the Xbox 360 in 2009, would be coming to the iPhone this Spring. The studio has followed up with a press release providing additional details as well as a trailer video showing the action to come.

Enter the world of Gilverado, a kingdom plagued by hideous monsters and tortured souls. Choose from four angels with unique demonic familiars and battle against a storm of enemies pouring out of Hell’s gates! Fight your way out of tight spots as you are surrounded by enemy units and bullets from both sides of the screen. The unique left and right shooting mechanic of Deathsmiles will keep you on your toes as you dodge and weave through complex enemy fire, beautifully crafted by the modern masters of shmups, CAVE.

DeathSmiles is a side-scrolling, gothic horror-styled shooter that sends hosts of enemies your way from all four sides of the screen, delivering highly intense onscreen action. It offers a choice of the order in which its various stages are tackled as well as of the character you play: Windia, “the foppish English girl;" Casper, “the sassy German;" Follett, “the cautious French girl;" or Rosa, “the California valley girl."

The Xbox 360 version features three play modes: a straight port of the arcade version, an “arranged" mode that offers independent control of a second on-screen character, and a graphically enhanced mode offering more lavish visuals.

Cave has also announced that their excellent Mushihimesama Bug Panic [App Store] will receive an update in March bringing Bluetooth and 3G/WiFi multiplayer, a choice to turn the Autobomb feature on or off, a choice of Attack Modes (lock or direct), as well as an update to the “lite" version [link], enabling players to play through all stages in the first world and also the Score Attack Mode.

Cave, who has produced 48 danmaku shooters over the past 16 years, has recently been recognized as “the most prolific developer of danmaku shooters" by the 2011 Guinness Book of World Records: Gamer’s Edition.

It looks a bit like Solipskier which was/is very enjoyable. How does it contrast in terms of gameplay?

      1. amroc

It's a lovely game, although I personally thought Solipskier was greatly superior. But then I guess they're not really similar. Gameplay wise it has more in common with iCopter.

      2. anonymous

It is 99 cents what are you waiting for????

    2. EastsideStompers

Strangely, when I played for the objective 'reach Island 5 with screen flipped', I found I played better! Anybody else find that?

Anyway, great game. There always seems to be a little motive here or there to keep going. Currently it's to try and reach 100000. I'm on 91500 now. Today's triumph was to reach Island 7....finally!

I'm personally not sure it has the lasting value of AB though.

      1. EastsideStompers

        Mission accomplished....116000: )

    3. Quantum Sheep

Fantastic little game, made with big love. Brilliant and well deserved! :D

    4. csddavies

Nice game. And it goes to show you don't even have to know how to spell in your description to do well.

      1. Guest

That was a cheap shot. Enjoy those sour grapes.

What is this obsession almost everyone seems to have?

        1. Blueknight1st

What I meant to say was "What is up with this obsession almost everyone seems to have with spelling?". I can't go anywhere on the internet without someone belittling someone else over their spelling.

        2. csddavies

Obsession about spelling? It just seems that in this day and age of automatic spell checking (even my browser tells me) that it would be easy enough to take 1 pass at the text that is going to be seen by millions and correct the word 'beautiful'. It just conveys a professionalism about your product. I realize people are from other countries, that's why I think it's even doubly as important to spell and grammar check. I think in this era of 140 character tweets that people have gotten lazy about spelling.

It's #1 in Italy, too. Really interested now...

    6. JCGaga

      **** angry birds.

    7. TheTheory

I'm loving this game. It's just a feel-good experience. Looks good, plays well, and offers nice achievements to work on. Two thumbs up from me!

    8. andrzej raczynski

the trailer alone wore me out on the game. but whatever, to each their own, if something like doodle jump can be a big hit, so could anything else i suppose.

      1. amroc

Have to agree. It's a nice game, and it deserves to do well, but so do quite a few other games I can think of that didn't do so well. It seems to me that people too readily applaud what turns out to popular, just for being popular.

        1. Jared Nelson

I don't totally agree with this. I reviewed it and absolutely loved it before it had placed high on the charts. I had no idea it would end up being so popular, I just enjoyed it because it was so charming and fun.

    9. slicecom

I'll buy it just to keep Angry Birds out of the #1 slot. So tired of hearing about that game.

      1. JCGaga

Same here...the devs think it's bigger than it really is.

    10. David Luchetti

yay for Andreas!! i hope he can develop games full time now! what a great story for him! great game too, all my friends are obsessed with it.

    11. Emmanuel

      Adorable game, very well done!

    12. br1an

Too bad their iTunes page is crammed with thousands of fake, repetitive, 5-star reviews. Company must have payed for a review-posting service. It's a shame because the game has potential to be more than a fun, short-lived, somewhat shallow experience.

      1. Jared Nelson

lol. Conspiracy theorists always make me laugh. Or maybe there's just thousands of people who feel it's a five star game, which is also the reason it's #1 right now? But I'm sure that would be too rational of an explanation for you.

        1. br1an

Um... sure. Nice try. Just read the reviews. They're copy-pasted, word-for-word, multiple times throughout the game's page. And somehow it's received more reviews in less than 24hrs than Fruit Ninja, Angry Birds Seasons, Doodle Jump, Bejewelled 2, Slice It, UNO, NBA Jam have managed to get their entire time in the App Store? Whatever, friend-o.

          1. bomber

Those games got updated 2-3 days ago, the review count is reset with each update. In iTunes on desktop you can see the total number of reviews, which is much higher for the other games.

          2. Jared Nelson

What app store are you in? In the US store I just looked at 20+ pages of reviews, both from the very oldest ones and the newest ones, and didn't find one single review that was the same as any other.

      2. FeelingScammed

I totally agree with br1an. I hate conspiracy theories, however it seems very obvious to me that the majority of the reviews absolutely have to be fakes. I saw many repeated reviews and the others are so over the top exaggerating praise that they can't possibly be real. I bought this app biased on all of the glowing "reviews" it received, but quickly after playing it I knew I had been had. If you take a closer look at the reviews it is pretty obvious that they must be fake. It wouldn't be the first time a company used employees or hire a PR company to bring attention to their product. I just want my .99 cents back!!

    13. Sneeza

It's number one in the UK now too! Congratulations, Andreas!

    14. Kontactseth

Neogaf says this a clone of a game called wavespark. This game clearly has more shine though.

      1. Republican

NeoGAF is prone to overreaction. Wavespark was not the first game like this. In fact, someone on the forums posted a vid of a game before wavespark's time that was awfully similar.

And Tiny Wings has a lot of things besides just a nice paint job that make it better. The whining over this game's success is ridiculous.

    15. Jozefx

So, top two games are now copies of older Flash games, heh :\ Yes, Tiny Wings is a complete ripoff of Wavespark. Still, a great, fun polished game, and damn well better than angry birds with its infinite trial and error gameplay.

Er, I mean... Stay there! :D

    17. Hego

im wating for a lite version before buying..

      1. Bjjhjvjhj

Buy the game. It's just a buck.

        1. Hego

I bought pocket god because of all the hype around it, didn't like it at all. Don't want to make the same mistake again.

    18. john denton

      $1?! Don't be so tight ;P

    19. john denton

      oops doubled...

    20. Wortek

      It's "BIRDS" again! How ironical.

    21. meh

This game is straight up fun. Downloaded on a whim and love it.
