More ‘Metal Gear Solid Touch’ Details

1UP.com has some excerpts from an interview with the Metal Gear Solid director and Metal Gear Solid Touch creative producer about their plans for the upcoming title for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Perhaps most disappointing for Metal Gear fans is that the game is a rather simplified version of MGS.

The development team’s first impression was that MGS has to be all about stealth, but you can’t play a quick game on the train if it’s about that. It’s a little much to ask of someone trying our games for the first time. That’s why we made it a simple touch-screen shooting game.

The developers are fans of the iPhone and iPod Touch platform but are trying to design a game suited for the platform. They describe MGS Touch as “nothing more than an entrance for us" and expects that it may introduce those who are unfamiliar with the Metal Gear Solid franchise.

IGN confirms that the mechanics of the game will boil down to simple tap-shooting.

As revealed early today, you slide your finger on the screen to move Snake’s view around. You then tap to make Snake fire. Zooming in and out make use of pinch gestures, where you place two fingers on the screen and slide them together or apart.

As you might have figured out, you don’t move Snake about the stages like you did in Metal Gear Solid 4. There is more to the game than just shooting, though. At the end of each stage, you’ll be treated to still shots that push the story forward.

Looks interesting, for those that have played it, is it as good as GTA2? CJS looks to recreate that GTA2 feeling which is why I'm buzzed for it. Regardless, I'll probably end up picking it up. Hopefully there's an introductory price for it.

Note the GP2X has no 3D hardware. It's software rendering. (GP2X is a 250MHz (or so, softclockable) ARM7 core -- well, two cores actually but the 2nd core is rarely used and has no MMU.)

I wonder if the iPhone version will actually utilize OpenGL?

There appears a big bug in the game within the first city that the developer has been made aware of.

    I missed it... it's gone :(

Apex have removed it from sale due the issue mentioned above. Apparently it only happens in App Store builds which they can't test until the game appears in the App Store - great system Apple! Link:

Is this another paper pilot? The hype sounds the same.

Take a look at the photos above - there is clearly no perspective correction on the building textures, which means this is a CPU game, they have not put in the effort to port it to OpenGL ES. I predict this will be horribly slow on the 1G Touch. If anyone with a 1G Touch buys it, please post a performance review.

Downloaded it this morning from the Aus store and it started great - good graphics & music. Very similar to the original GTA. Unfortunately during the second mission, the road falls apart and the screen goes all crappy from there. Hopefully a fix is coming soon, as it seems like a good game so far.

So, when it will be released ??

  22. Danny

Hmm.... I want this game but I don't know anything about this game. What's the game's clear title? and... relaese date?

  23. JD

Not sure what you mean by "clear title", but the game is called "Payback" and it will be out in 1-2 weeks when the bug fix is approved by Apple.

  24. Danny

    Thanks to JD !!
