Gangstar Rio: City of Saints, $6.99 - Gameloft is offering up a couple of freebies this weekend on two games which have never been free before. First up is Gangstar Rio: City of Saints [$6.99], their take on the whole Grand Theft Auto open-world sandbox game. We reviewed Gangstar Rio when it released back in late 2011, and despite some typical Gameloft-isms like terrible voice work and a paper thin story, we thought it offered up a fairly robust open-world crime game experience.

It's been pretty regularly updated too, adding in new content and most recently widescreen support for the iPhone 5.

N.O.V.A. 3 - Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance, $6.99 - The second game being offered up for free is N.O.V.A. 3 [$6.99]. Previously, the N.O.V.A. series had been mostly a riff on the Halo games, but this most recent entry more closely resembles something like Crysis. Either way, expect lots of sci-fi first-person shooting action and impressive visuals. As with most Gameloft entries, there's a robust online multiplayer offering in N.O.V.A. 3, and as such we gave it its own review back when the game released in May of last year. We also reviewed the single-player campaign, which is pretty excellent as well.

Gameloft has been flirting more with free-to-play games as of late, but both N.O.V.A. 3 and Gangstar Rio are premium-priced games that you can snag for zero dollars right now and through this weekend. Don't miss out.

  • fleshman

    • Brandon Blokzijl

Both fine for free or $0,99. Ripoff sure, but it's decent.

      So is your comment!

    Thanks Jared

I don't care. Make a dev diary for Gangstar Vegas, gameloft.

part 2 of Gangstar Vegas is already out.

  • dariusjr98

I was embarrassed just hearing that voice acting from Gangstar Rio.

  • Shadowking2214

New players? They're gonna need to learn to aim well against the flying people with RPGs...I have a 1.9 k/d and I still have trouble with them

    • ihd1234567890

NOVA 3 is very unbalanced and I hope NOVA 4 can fix that. Its not deep enough if you ask me. The system of NOVA 3 is very shallow compared to MC3 or 4. People mostly stay with the RPG's and jetpack combination, making very noob like experiences if you ask me. Single player is extremely hard with overly aggressive and powerful enemies. AI allies may be more useful in this game than MC, the last missin is 1) by yourself 2) Too many enemies and no cover 3) plain old run for your life and shoot anything 4) too many tiger things and fat guys charging at u. If they dont fix these problems in NOVA 4, stick with NOVA 2 or a MC becuz i aint gonna buy NOVA 4 if it's gonna be like this very good looking, but terrible effort on making a true sci-fi experience. MORE WEAPONS, MORE VEHICLES, BIGGER MAPS, MORE PLAYERS IN ONE SERVER (since in some maps it seems relatively empty in many parts) DEEPER SYSTEM.

I kinda agree with some of your points but this is a sweet game. Flawed but awesome

In Gangstar Rio, kill the men in casual suits. They should have more money than all the other pedestrians.

Although both games are not exactly my favorite types on iOS (PS3 foreva 4 shootaz) im getting them to check out what was the hype about a couple of years ago))

Also curious about style and quality Gameloft rips such titles as GTA and Crysis ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Thanx for the heads-up, TA!

    • Glamrod

Crisis?!? I suppose a little bit! Nova is more of a halo clone in every way though(4 letter title, space, warthogs, bluish female AI)

      • flashbackflip

Lol i've played HALO long ago.. I guess it was the first one.. Then i bought PS3 instead of xbox and lost its track.. But as Jared noted - seems like Crysis to me

      • flashbackflip

I mean - returning to Earth and finding all those evil aliens in the cities.. Well, i gotta see whats up there;)

I really don't think the voice acting in Gameloft games is that bad. Especially for games that cost just a few bucks.

    • JBRUU

Recently the voiceovers have been surprisingly decent. But Rio and 9mm? Don't get me started.

      • callmericard0

I read somewhere (forget where) that the Brazilian accents and slang were totally authentic :s Ha ha. I liked the game. It's nuts. Not as nuts as Backstab tho, but what is?

      • JBRUU

Even if the accents were ok, the delivery was nothing short of horrendous. It was like a 5th grader reading their lines in a school play.

      • callmericard0

Ha ha. They're a bonkers company for sure.

Looks like I'll be trying NOVA3 after all. I don't much care for FPS on touch screens, but for free? Why not.

  • worldcitizen1919

I remember I bought a game called GTA a car game like that name from Gameloft. Then one day they released an update. They released it as a freemium game and so although I had already paid $5 for the game they replaced it with a FREE game full of pay walls!

This is how they double dip. First it's a full fledged game then next step is freemium to milk more $$.

These are nothing but freemium games undeserving of any raps, plugs or publicity. Gameloft don't give things away for free. The reason these games are free entry is only because there's plenty of iap to double dip. It's a farce

    • JBRUU

I take it you've never actually played these games.

    • Lamar Taylor

You can play both games for free and don't need to buy anything to advance through the game. These aren't racing titles where you eventually face some super car that can't be beaten without upgrades. You are complaining about the wrong games lol.

At least play them before posting and passing along bad info.

      • ihd1234567890

Gangstar Rio is a disappointment since you are going to have to pay IAP because at the end of the game you can't win a lot of money anymore. Just a few thousand dollars in the not really varied side missions. After paying for a bunch of ammo, and buying just a few vehicles of my own, im already down to 65000 dollars and i can't do anything about that. You have to friggin pay for every little thing. You can't redo missions or anything. I just recommend you to save up your money on Gangstar Vegas. You CAN replay missions. You can buy districts for money in a certain period of time. You CAN play Video Poker, Blackjack, or Slots in a casino. There are a BUNCH of replayable side missions like beat em ups, racing cars 2 modes, racing boats 2 modes, racing planes 2 modes, kill as many ppl as fast as you can, kill all the waves as fast as you can, and pull of heists. OR just drive around with 5 stars above your head and the army is after you with tanks and war helos. Best of all, the world is WAYYY bigger than Rio. 9X LARGER. Try THAT on for size.

I used to buy Gameloft games, and even spoke up for them despite plagiarizing more popular, superior console games.

Then they turned into a freemium company, and added progressively more annoying bullshit into their apps. Now I won't even touch these when giving them away. The market would be better off with them bankrupt.
