Back in early July, the classic LucasArts adventure game from the 90's Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge was released for the iPhone and iPad. Much more than just a simple port, the entire game features modernized graphics and an interface that has been tailored for touch screen controls. For the purists out there, you can easily switch over to the original 1991 graphics at any time with a two finger swipe, exactly like you can in the iPhone release of the original The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition [$7.99].

Earlier today, LucasArts dropped the price of the iPhone version of Monkey Island 2 from $7.99 all the way down to 99¢. Here is an excerpt from our review:

Monkey Island 2 takes place after the events of the first Monkey Island where wannabe pirate Guybrush Threepwood is introduced and meets the cast of characters included in the game as he seeks out the pirate leaders and attempts to prove himself through three challenges. A ghost pirate named LeChuck is thrown in to the mix, along with the beautiful Elaine Marley. Without spoiling too much, the game concludes with romance, root beer, and fireworks. Even though playing the original is by no means required to enjoy the sequel, Monkey Island is filled with great writing, silly characters, funny situations, and often extremely odd solutions to the problems that Guybrush must overcome which is really worth checking out– Especially considering the fantastic job LucasArts did on the iPhone port of the special edition release.

If you aren't familiar with Monkey Island 2, take a look at our extensive review from when the game was released in July. If you are familiar with the game, but haven't been able to part with the $8 to buy it for your iPhone, your patience has paid off and you should definitely pick up Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge during this limited time 99¢ sale.

Too bad this game looks like garbage on any retina display =/

Lucasarts don't have much history of updating their apps, but I still have hope =/

    Damn, no iPad sale.

And the iPad version receives no discount at all, only blurb telling me I should go get the iphone version while its cheap.

    Bah!

    • Andsoitgoes

      Agreed. X 100. Sigh.

I accidentally downloaded it to iTunes thinking it was a universal version. Not a game to play on a small screen imho. I'm weary of these iPad versions costing so much more.

Picking this up right now, I've never played a monkey island game before, but the lite versions seemed pretty cool. Just couldn't justify £4.99 or whatever they were before.

Will the storyline for this make any sense to me? Considering I haven't played the first one?

Never played either but for a dollar I have to get it. I've heard its enjoyable by itself but possibly more if you've played the first.

Just picked this up. I was on the verge of buying it last week after trying out the lite version. For once, the app store has worked in my favour!

An absolute classic! I hope to see, "Curse of Monkey Island" (monkey island 3) on the iphone as well. Though, that one doesn't need a graphic refresh!

I figured this would happen on Talk Like a Pirate Day, much like it happened last year with Monkey Island 1. If this is happening now, I figure one of three things will happen:

a.) The iPad versions will go on sale for the 19th.

b.) The iPod versions wil all go free on the 19th.

c.) The 3rd Monkey Island will be released on the 19th.

Of course, theres always the chance of a combination, or of none of them. But I'm personally rooting for a or c.

In the meanwhile,I'm not taking any chances and spending 99 well spent cents on this game. Amazing!

I damn sure hope so, I was CRUSHED to not see this for the iPad. Here's hoping!!!

I wish it was the first one! I haven't tried it yet and I don't want to pay $7.99 for it. :-(

How do you change the graphics to classic?? I cant find any option for it >.>

    • HawkEye

It was a double finger swipe in the first game, but I've only played this one on the iPad and this go around I really liked the art so I didn't bother looking for the classic swap control. That said, I picked up the iPhone version, because for $.99 it's a steal, and I still hope for a retina update later on. Also, every purchase gives them more incentive to revive say Day of the Tentacle, Monkey 3, Loom, or Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. All amazing games that deserve a fresh release on the iDevices.
