This new Doodle Jump update adds in a brand spanking new theme, a Jungle level in this case. The new theme is free to download and will be the third alternate theme added to the game. Lima Sky describes it as "THIS IS OUR MOST AMAZING UPDATE EVER!"

Glyder 2 [App Store]
Current Version: 1.2.1
Our Review
Forum Thread

If you're like me, every time you've booted up Glyder 2 in the past you've thought to yourself "what this game really needs is an Isle of Friendship!" Lucky for us, Glyder 2's developers have heard our call, and now players can earn friendship points by simply adding "Glyder friends." These points can be spent to unlock new wings, outfits, and other secrets, the latter of which probably isn't that exciting if they didn't name it explicity in the update description.

Eliminate Pro [App Store]
Current Version: 2.0
Our Coverage

New multiplayer environments, new gear and enhanced matchmaking. The best news is that all of this is 100% compatible with Eliminate's soon to be released Co-Op mode. This update of Eliminate Pro comes Al Gore-approved, as you can now recycle extra gear for credits.

Jet Car Stunts [App Store]
Current Version: 1.3
Our Review
Forum Thread

Jet Car Stunts just got even more awesome. You can now engage in some friendly "ghost racing" through challenges and replays. Even better, replays can be downloaded directly from leaderboards. The menu system got a much-needed reworking as well, so this game is going to feel pretty fresh the next time you boot it.

Compression [App Store]
Current Version: 1.2
Our Review
Forum Thread

Compression is a great game, but even I'll admit that I was getting a bit bored its mechanics after playing the game for hours on end. The new "Blocked" mode is absolutely pefect for me, as it adds in a ton of variety in the form of obstacles and bombs. The game plays significantly differently in this mode, so everybody who thought they were done with Compression needs to go give it another run.

The Dexter: The Game 1.5 update seems notable, too. It at least shows that the game is still being supported and that there's a chance that we'll see the promised episodic content, which should be as great as the first part if it's released.

I hate how Little White Bear has the nerve to charge EXTRA for an entire second mode on top of an already paid game. I don't mind buying credits for Eliminate or extra songs for the music games, but keeping players from accesing the content in a free update is ridiculous.

The Blocked mode is for players who enjoyed the Classic mode, and wanted more. Those players are loving Blocked, and appreciate that we spent time creating an additional play style for them to enjoy. It was not a free update, because we have to earn the money back from making it. Doing an update was the only way to deliver the optional new mode to players. And in all honesty, without IAP, the Blocked mode would have never been feasible.

If developers can’t be paid for additional content, there’s a chance they won’t make it at all, and with good reason: feeding yourself and paying rent from the work put into your app is not a sure thing.

(So the only legitimate complaint would be if the original game was not worth what you paid. Or if buying the additional content were mandatory, which it’s not.)

Just so I understand...are you saying that developers should not charge extra for extra content? Paying $0.99 for a new game mode seems like a much better deal than paying $0.99 for play time.

Buying new songs for a music game is like buying a level/expansion pack. PC game companies have been selling expansion packs since at least the 286 days. Look at WoW - how many expansion packs for that have there been? Fans everywhere love expansion packs. Paying for a new game mode that you get to play & keep forever is the same thing.

I paid for the new new Blocked mode in Compression & love it. It adds a whole new spin to the game. For $0.99, the very fun Blocked add-on for Compression is a great deal. I say pick it up & enjoy!

It also looks like Compression is free right now. Now THAT'S a deal!

It's not a deal when you already PAID for the game on release and now you have to PAY for the DLC. The people who did not get the game for free should not have to pay DLC. That's just wrong.

      • MrMuesli

Why? You speak about it as if it's a great misjustice. If you go to a pizza restaurant and order a Quattro Stagioni, and decide you fancy extra chilli's with that to spice things up, do you expect them to be free too because you already bought the pizza?

Chris, I don't get why you think it's wrong to pay for more content. I really want to understand though. As a developer, I can easily release a new game mode as an entire new game and no one would even consider that to be an injustice (look at geoDefense vs geoDefense Swarm...both outstanding games, but Swarm could have been sold as a new game mode within the original).

Can you help clarify what about paid DLC in a paid game feels wrong? Thanks.

For what it's worth, when Apple first opened up the ability to have in-app purchases last summer, they only allowed it for paid applications. There wasn't even the option to pay for things within free apps.

Chris, I'm truly not understanding why you think this is wrong. Compression was designed with only one style of play in mind. The game was available for $0.99, or free during a promotion, and by most people's standards, it's a great game. Nowhere in the description did it say that new modes were coming, or that there would ever be an update in the future. However, some players asked for a new mode. The only way we could finance doing that was to either make it a separate game for $0.99 (and clog up the App Store), or offer it as paid DLC. Could you please explain why this is so offensive to you? We could've just as easily not made Blocked at all, and spent time working on a new game.

The truth is that there was zero chance of Compression getting a free extra mode, because its sales did not support such a thing. In terms of time spent, Blocked cost over $2,000 to create. Can you suggest an alternate way for us to make that money back? As developers, we all want to know how we can make players happy, yet still pay the bills. If you have ideas, please share.

Bryan Duke, I am all for DLC but not in this case. Just in particular with this game, I happened to buy it for 99 cents when it was not free. Mostly everyone who has it now got it for free during that free app a day promotion. If I got it for free, I would gladly buy the DLC no problem. Yet I was one of the few who actually bought the game and not get it for free. That is why I don't understand why the people who already paid the 99 cents for the game should have to pay extra. The people who got the game for free and pay the 99 cents for DLC are ultimately winning, leaving the rest cheated.

What I'm trying to say is that this game was not always free and I bought it when it paid. I don't see the reason for me being charged for DLC if I already paid my 99 cents.

Ok, thanks for the explanation. If that's a widespread feeling, then that's another good reason for devs never to have free sales (so no one is "cheated"). I really wish we could change that feeling though.

Maybe it's not that widespread - I made Air Hockey free for a day, but didn't get a single user grumble from anyone who'd paid for it previously. I view that as over 100,000 people getting a great deal that day, not the rest of my users getting cheated.

Thoughts? Thanks for the discussion - I'm sure there are lots of devs who want to understand what the end users are thinking.

Chris, while I understand you feeling cheated that you paid for Compression and others did not, I do not understand how it has anything to do with the DLC. We can't differentiate between people who paid and who didn't pay. We don't have that information. So the only options were to a) Make it free for everyone. b) Charge everyone. c) Not make it at all.

If we go with the first option, Blocked would not exist. No chance at all. With the second option, those who want more of the game have that option, and we have some small chance of paying for the development. With the last option, nobody gets anything at all. What option did you want?
