In the wake of iTunes Connect returning to operation following Apple's holiday hiatus, a massive wave of updates have been pushed out. These are just a few of the notable updates, but even if you don't own any of these games I'd still check for updates as I just downloaded a metric... truckload.

626134

Hook Champ - Hookbot has been added, a new playable character available via a 99¢ in-game purchase. When you play as Hookbot there is no ghost chasing you, and he also has a recharging steam powered thruster that works a lot like the gun on normal characters. A new costume system was added that allows you to even further change the appearance of your characters along with new hats and a upgrades at the in-game store. (Review, App Store)

871622

Zombieville USA - Play as one of 7 new characters which all look different and provide a different spin on gameplay such as some characters having more health or different movement speeds. Level selection was also added along with checkpoints you can return to once you've reached them. (Review, App Store)

727765

Doodle Jump - An enhancement to the existing holiday themed snow update, there is now a new yeti monster boss that has to be shot down with snowballs before you can jump on the two platforms he hogs up. (Review, App Store)

960702

Red Conquest - Quite a few of the complaints we had in our review have been addressed, an additional tutorial level does a great job at explaining the basic tactics of the game and the difficulty curve was lowered for the early levels among other improvements. (Review, App Store)

866370

Jet Car Stunts - A new in-game tutorial really clears things up for new players, and a new casual and much more forgiving game mode has been added to both platforming and time trial game modes. You can also now change your camera view during replays. (Review, App Store)

661219

iBlast Moki - New levels, new graphics, a completely redesigned level editor, and a new "Doodleland" world make this great game even better. The tutorial has been improved, along with other bug fixes and tweaks. (Review, App Store)

Oh Hook Champ, why must you sully your name so?

It's an experiment. In short, if DLC works out, we want to see if we can charge less for future games, while making up the price with optional DLC. We'll be watching the reactions of it carefully.

Personally, I thought the DLC we did was pretty good. It's non-essential, but you actually get more than what most other games are offering for the same cost as their DLC.

More discussion/details in the forum thread.

Yea, but they are some idiots who think even if they got it for 99c they should have free updates and everything free for ever. Like they don't even care if it's a DLC you don't even need and not a major part and they are not making you buy it. I for one think DLC is great, i will not want the DLC in this game but you are not making me buy it so i don't have to buy it. Why won't people understand that you don't need to buy it.

Well for me, someone who would probably regard Hook Champ as the best game on the App Store, it's a bitter pill to stomach as the character has functionality others' don't - I've yet to complete the post-credit levels, but if someone is willing to stump up for a micro-payment they can experience whatever level they want without any fear of dying. How will it effect the discovery of exploits, let alone the physiological impact of not feeling like something's just on your tail?

How can you be sure that without the threat of the ghost to harry the player perhaps people will play the game differently. You argument will inevitably be if someone is good enough to post a good score they'll beat the ghost anyways, but what about the possibilities to explore levels for

In effect, it's in the same league as EA's sports games in which you can buy stats modifiers to make your experience easier, and those always have rubbed a lot of people up the wrong way. If it was just a re-skin character then I'd have little issue - it's the functionality that I care about and it feels like you've taken a step towards breaking an almost perfectly balanced game.

Even despite that, I have to thank you guys for making just a wonderful game and no matter how you release your next game I'll be giving it a spin!

The game’s only “broken” if you want the changes. Your choice.

      • Yuan

It's not your choice if someone else pays and beats your score because of it, now is it?

You know, I was considering making the DLC cosmetic only. I always thought cosmetic-only DLC was rather lame, though, personally. I weighed it against a new character, and went with that. I did try to make the new guy as balanced as possible, I believe he only has a possible advantage in two of the 32 levels...

Anyway, I'm kind of thinking out loud in the above paragraph. I'm taking in all viewpoints, good and bad (as long as the "this is bad" viewpoints are as well reasoned as Yuan's). Make sure your opinion is heard on the Hook Champ thread if you're just reading this but have something to say. Opinions will definitely shape the course of all future DLC, even to the point of whether we do it or not.

Sorry, my editing got a big messed up, this is how the paragraph without an end was meant to, well, end:

''You argument will inevitably be if someone is good enough to post a good score they'll beat the ghost anyways, but what about the possibilities to explore levels for exploits, let alone the physiological impact of not feeling like something's just on your tail?''

      • Lukeb

I don't yet own Hook Champ, but I can relate to the frustration of a game update making it easier for players to beat a previously posted score. Scoreboards should always be added for anything that changes the game experience.

It's identical to the jetboots, not the gun.
