'Boulder Dash' Gameplay Video with Retro and New Graphics
posted by arn on May 12th, 2009 12:52 PM EDT in Upcoming GamesChillingo and First Star Software has released the first gameplay video from their upcoming Boulder Dash port for the iPhone. We took a first look at the game a while back, but this video should bring back memories.
First Star Software is offering both updated graphics as well as the original "retro" graphics. The game is due for release on May 15th.
Is there anyone who will play it with new graphics? Way to shiny and confusing. Presentation is a LOT better with retro graphics.

The updated graphics are a design disaster (love how his helmet overlaps the blocks…) for many reasons, but the retro mode is absolute Win™. They should sell a cheaper version that just has the retro look and fire whomever designed the look of the "updated" version.
with so many remix games, i still don't see how people 1st thought it was going to have only updated gfx.
i'm sure, after all, space taxi will have the original pixelart as well.
Reminds me of Mr. Do for colecovision. No idea which one came first though.
Arcade Mr.Do was released by Universal in 1982, the Coleco version was released in 1983 whilst Boulder Dash was first seen in 1984.
I don't mind the updated graphics. I will even go so far as to say I prefer them. With the exception of the very first iterations of Boulder Dash Rockford was a person in a hard hat and the graphics got updated every time a new version came out for a new platform.
It is neat that there is a retro mode, but I think the outrage about the new graphics is misplaced and we all need to hug it out!
How pricey will it be? I really hope for 2.99USD, no more.

I've decided I like those new graphics as well. Music is cool too…
Hehe.. Most people end up liking what they first knew. The young 'uns say "it was only in the first few that he didn't have the hard-hat" ..well, yeah. But for everyone who started on the original BoulderDash (on the c64, Apple, Spectrum, etc) Rockford was a creature ..In BoulderDash III they may have given him a space-suit, but he was still a creature, not a man ..and he wasn't so wimpy as to need a hard hat.
But I don't take so much issue with that decision. It's the dirt, the rocks, and the goddamn *colours* of the new graphics that I can't stand. I can handle the butterflies and fireflies looking less abstract. I can handle Rockford being a man in a hard-hat (though I'd question why you'd do it when it takes away a prime element of Boulderdash's uniqueness) ..but IMHO there should have been some art-design went into updating the graphics. Those are just garish.
So it's for that reason, and the nostalgia, that I'll play it retro.

I just searched itunes (UK Store) and for the first time – it is now showing the app up..
When I click to buy it – it comes up "not available in the uk store" – what is up with that????

Fanastic conversion.
its eary days yet but if you zoom in a bit, your "man" appears to move a bit faster.. Love it… right back to the game……
30 mins later or so… still loving it!!
just as addictive as I remember it..
My only recommendation for the next version would be to allow a slightly faster moving character if possible…. (maybe 3 speed levels – "new" "original" and "extreme" for example… again if possible..
Its amazing it runs as it does anyway…
