'Zombie Drive' Staggers Frighftully Towards the App Store

The first news of upcoming zombie-based FPS Zombie Mansion broke early last month.  We were frankly surprised to see in the comment and forum posts just how fond readers are of zombies.  ("Woo! Zombies! I’m buying this one! The game could be watching zombies watching paint dry, i’d buy it.")

Well, zombie fans: get ready.  Fuel Industries has just submitted Zombie Drive to the App Store and it should be available in a day or two.

As the developer frames it,

It’s called Zombie Drive, and it centers around you, the protagonist being left behind in a quarantined zone sectioned off by the army. If you’re doomed to get nuked, you might as well take out some zombies on the way—by driving them over.

The developer posted a gameplay video.

Zombie Drive is another title utilizing the increasingly popular Unity 3D game engine.

Now if only someone would make a game where you control zombies and try to kill the enemy zombies by eating them or taking their body parts to make more zombies. It would be nothing but zombie-on-zombie action! W00t!

I made a table-top game like this about twenty five years ago. Every player starts off with one zombie that you shamble across the map that has randomly placed npc zombies. You avoid the stronger zombies while attacking the weaker ones. You could either eat them to improve your zombie's strength, or collect parts (legs, arms, body, and of course, braaaaiiiinnnssss) to make more zombies. This game was so fun, the other guys in the group from way back then are still playing it today. It would be great for the iPhone.

Now if only a game company would steal this idea instead of coming out with yet another match-three or driving game ;-)

I watched the Youtube video. The graphics are awful, and the game looks pointless.

  • CrocStock says:

Seemed ok until I saw the video. This would be wise to avoid in that state. XD

  • Silverfist says:

Love the concept — hell, I'd be willing to throw down money on a match-three zombie game or a zombie flashlight app — but after watching the vodei I'm a bit concerned about how rough it is. How can one possibly hope to run down zombies if you can't see them until you're actually driving past them?!

A little more graphic work so the zombies appear well in front of you, and this is definitely a winner.

It looks like a bad copy of Carmageddon. Man, I loved that game.

  • Bill says:

Looks fun! smashing zombies, blood splatter – you can't go wrong!

and yeah – a little more advance viewing of the zombies before they just appear. But once they do appear, it looks like you can totally mow em all down! :)

Carmageddon, now there's a franchise that desperately needs to be revived. Carmageddon 2 is still to this day my favorite driving game, bar none. I don't understand how such a potential goldmine could be kept untapped all this time.

if they could get that nazi swastika off the car then it would be much better =/

  • dave says:

love zombie, but i wouldnt play this if it were free

  • NotYou says:

    @Joe
    What?

  • Silverfist says:

@ Joe– not a swastika, dude… That's an iron cross, military symbol of Prussia and then of Germany during WWI. Basically skin to the US medal of honor, it's got squat-all to do with Nazis.

Those who do not know history are doomed to misinterpret it.

    .

  • Scott says:

@ Silverfist: Correct, but the medal was reissued in 1939 by Hitler (who actually got one in WW1, btw) and it was used throughout WW2 as German (e.g. not Prussian) decoration. And let's be honest, there is a reason that they used that symbol vs. any number of possibilities.

  • Scott says:

p.s. when I said above: "And let’s be honest, there is a reason that they used that symbol vs. any number of possibilities." – I was referring to the game creators making the choice.

  • Jesse says:

Got to admit, my first thought was "wtf with the german cross?" Pretty much ruined my chances of purchase right there. No, not funny. No, not cool.

  • jpyre says:

Wow…. the nazis definatly ruined the swastika so noone can use it anymore but I definatly dont think they ruined the iron cross…

Its kind of like the Rebel Flag stars and bars er whatever in the southern united states…. It didnt and doesnt always represent slavery but thats the perception now I guess….

  • Wabaam says:

the swastika is a symbol of power, not nazis.

    DURRRRRR
