Yesterday, an extended look at the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series confirmed that the games will launch individually on mobile and PC beginning next month. The video was made private soon after it went live but it showcased many of the games included in the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series. At the time, there was no news about how these games will be released and whether they will be updates or new purchases and whether the old versions will be delisted. Obviously Final Fantasy 3 and 4 on mobile and PC will remain considering they were rebranded with the 3D Remake text in the name and logo. Following yesterday’s news, the Steam pages for Final Fantasy 6 ($14.99) Final Fantasy 5 ($14.99) have been updated to reflect that these are the old versions with (Old ver.) in the game names and that both will be delisted on July 27. When Final Fantasy 6 and Final Fantasy 5 were brought to Steam, both ports got a lot of hate for being based on the mobile versions (which have visual issues). Since then, the community has been working to fix some things like the interface and the sprites to be more like the original. If you’ve not played Final Fantasy 6 or Final Fantasy 5 on mobile or PC, watch the trailer below to see how this version of Final Fantasy 6 looks:
The store page for Final Fantasy 6 now says: “This game will no longer be available for purchase after July 27, 2021. Instead, please purchase the pixelated remaster version of “FINAL FANTASY VI" coming soon." The page for Final Fantasy 5 also says the same thing with Final Fantasy 5 mentioned in the warning. As of this writing, there has been no change to the App Store or Google Play pages for Final Fantasy 6 and Final Fantasy 5. It is unclear whether this means Square Enix will push out updates to change the pages or whether the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster will overwrite the current ones on mobile like Square Enix did with Chrono Trigger. Hopefully we get some clarity on what will happen to these Final Fantasy games on mobile once the first Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster releases. If you’d like to own Final Fantasy 6 and Final Fantasy 5 on Steam, you can still buy them until July 27. I know the mod scene for Final Fantasy 6 in particular is pretty great. With July beginning tomorrow, I’m hoping Square Enix puts out an official announcement for all the games and when we can expect them with price points. What do you think of the screenshots revealed yesterday so far and what would you like to see changed or fixed from prior releases?
