A couple of weeks back developer Uprising Games began teasing some new features that were on the way for their excellent retro-revival tennis game Tennis Champs Returns (Free), and as of this past weekend that update has gone live in the App Store. One of the biggest additions is the new BirdsEye Challenge system which allows you to dispute a call that’s close to the line and you’ll get a very cool camera replay that swoops in and shows exactly where the ball made contact with the court. Just like in professional tennis broadcasts!
This update also adds a ball wear system where the balls in play will wear over time. According to the developer in our forums, “More worn balls get a touch more aerodynamic drag (slower) and spin is a bit more effective. Fresh balls are a bit faster when serving." There are a total of 6 balls in play during a match, 3 for each player, and prior to serving you’ll be able to choose from your current 3. You can also now pick a Rival player for your career and should you beat them you’ll earn some extra rewards, and the training modes have all been integrated right into the Career mode which just makes more sense. Finally the overall UI has been refreshed and is much cleaner and more attractive, and although a small detail you can now choose whether your created player has a two-handed backhand or just a one-handed one. These details matter!
In case you’ve been out of the Tennis Champs loop, we absolutely loved the game in our review from early 2016 and easily chose it as our Game of the Week when it released. Since then its biggest updates have been the addition of online multiplayer and a women’s career mode as well as the Season 2 content update from last year which added all sorts of stuff. Basically this is one of the best games on all of mobile whether you’re a tennis fan or not, so if you’ve been sleeping on Tennis Champs Returns for these past couple of years now is a great time to rectify that.
