Cyan Porting Myst to iPhone

Touch Arcade forum user Cougarcat let us know that Cyan has quietly announced that they are porting Myst to the iPhone.

This is a small project that probably a very few of you know about. We are porting Myst to the iPhone. Ok, before some of you start groaning, this is an outside funded project that is keeping a few developers employed… but it is really more than that. It is an interesting and fun project. This is also a very small team with three of us (which includes Derek, Rand (not Randy) and myself).

For those not familiar with Myst, the game was first published for the Mac in 1993 and was both a critical and commercial success. While technologically rather simple from today’s standpoint, the game’s graphics and soundtrack were remarkably immersive. The game starts you on a strange island where you must explore your surroundings, solve puzzles and figure out the backstory.

Myst was recently ported to the Nintendo DS platform, and the following trailer provides a look at the DS version of the game:

I hope this doesn't let me down like Billy Frontier.

i hope its not like 10 bucks

  3. mavis

    @ Phil: of course it's worth $10! Aren't they all? ;)

Anyway, this one looks kinda cool. Can't wait to see some reviews!

Pangea is finally saying to themselves, "All this pain and suffering developing games on this awful games platform is finally paying off. Now we can just easily port everything that we did for the past ten years and make buckets of cash."

I really don't think 3D platformers are what the iTouch platform needs. There's no way this thing will work well, just look back at those awful games from when the DS first came out: analog control on the touch screen is horribly clumsy, and the iphone doesn't even have buttons for jumping, etc. On the plus side, though, seeing a slick 3D game on the appstore should send a good message to these lazy publishers (cough, EA) who seem to think that their little cellphone game ports are all the iphone can do. We shall see!

I'd have to disagree - no-one else seems to be producing any of these '3D platformers', and they do seem to work well. Even if they proved to be deficient, it's still good to have the choice / variety rather than all puzzle games!
I'm hoping Pangea bring all their productions over. Even their simpler titles like firefall look like a good fit to the iPhone platform, and I'm hoping against all odds for weekend warrior (gonna win some more lemur chow!)

The best 3D platformer ever made is Super Mario 64 for the N64. Super Mario 64 DS for the Nintendo DS would have been better with an analog stick rather than its touchscreen controls, but it's still an excellent game.

I think there's definitely room for quality 3D platformers.

I bought both Enigmo and Cro-Mag at full price. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I think I will wait until they lower the price on Bugdom like they did on their other games.

    I'd rather have Otto-Matic!

    ^ Same here!

But Brian Greenstone did say he was seriously considering making it in an e-mail reply I got a few weeks ago. Maybe we will see Otto-Matic by Christmas!!

Bugdom 2 was terrible, not even coming close to it's predecessor. Nanosaur 2 however would be ideal for the iPhone.

Personally, I would have much preferred Bugdom to Bugsom 2 and that really would have been a much better fit for the platform. However, as Pangea seem to be going for the easiest projects to develop approach, and Bugsom never made it to OS X, I won't hold my breath for it.

Also, I'd really like to see them do something original for a change too, rather than re-treads of games already released.

Oh god... there's a second Jimothy?

Anyway... Bugdom looks like something I'll only be interested in if they release a Lite version. Could be good, good be terrible, will certainly cost more than it's worth.

I think Billy Frontier is actually pretty fun. It's a "cute" game that works well on the iPhone.

    @ Jimothy 1
I say a hell yeah for the nanosaur!

We need to see some more side scrollers for the iPhone, toy bot diaries worked great. One of the first marios would be awesome but I wouldn't hold my breath for that, unless someone made a knock off.

Nanosaur 2 on iphone = awsome.
Imagine this though. Nanosaur 2 on iphone with the option to buy the Deluxe version, which is the full mac version running on an intel mac, and the option to use the iphone/touch as a wireless controller. Hey I can dream right?
