Square Enix is known to drop a few surprises now and then, but I can honestly say no one saw this one coming. The company just announced at the Gamescom convention that they will be releasing Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition for iOS, Android, and Windows 10 this fall. The game will follow the story of the original game and will be released in 10 chapters, with the first being free to try. It remains to be seen how much will be changed in the process, but the most obvious difference so far is in the game's art design. You know what? I'll let the trailer speak for me here.

Well... that's... that's certainly a thing, isn't it? Square is apparently hoping that the new art style and the user-friendly new touch controls will give the game more appeal for casual players. All of the characters from the adult-pants version are supposedly included, and all the thrills, spills, and chills of the narrative will also be packed in. Hm. I mean, I know some people that liked Final Fantasy XV, but I'm not sure it was for the story. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

As mentioned, the game will be available this fall worldwide, which puts it anywhere from late September to mid-December. All 10 chapters will be immediately available at launch, with the first being free to try and the others being paid IAPs. The last time Square used this kind of model for a mobile game was with Final Fantasy Dimensions, and I suppose that turned out okay-ish. Anyway, we'll have more for you on Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition when we get more details. For now, look forward to dozens of hours of fun staring at that... interesting interpretation of Gladiolus.

I'm thinking this will either be amazing, or absolutely horrendous, by the look of it, That said, it did pique my interest at least.

    • Dankrio

      Couldn't have said better myself...

    • Milotorou

      My thoughts exactly.

  • uberdan101

Still waiting for Final Fantasy VIII....

    • Taeles

few days late but just spotted an article talking about ff8's theme song coming out on vinyl. now fingers crossed on this because when square starts paying attention to a title in unusual ways its often to get eyes on it before you know. maybe a port hits in some fashion. -fingers crossed-

    • Blucard

      Dude. You're telling me. Jesus.

  • Bloodangel

This looks great!! Hope it keeps the gameplay of ff7

    Insta buy

  • fearlesskk

For PC this shit, come on they couldve released the actual game

    • Shaun Musgrave

They are releasing the normal version on PC. This is just a bonus, presumably aimed at the Windows 10 tablet crowd.

    Who cares about Gladiolus appearance.
Chock (aka. chocobo version of chick) Cindy is not only sexy in this version...but also CUTE!!!
    I'm sold! 🙂

    Curious about price tag tho.
    My bet:
    4.99 $ per episode
    39.99 $ all episodes

    What do you think, guys?

    • Lickzy

Your excitation about "Cindy is not only sexy in this version but also Cute!" Is the weirdest thing I have ever read on this page.

Barring the Feminazi on the Warhammer Quest review and lack of female characters.

      • Michal Hochmajer

You probably didn't see any my previous posts, right? :)))
No offense. I've never imagined that Square can exchange Cid in this way. And lets be real here, they did it on purpose (CIndy in console version is...ehm well done).
And cute is, because I like this ff3 3d like artstyle, despite I normally don't like old 3d techniques used in games.

Sure, if you feel offended by my sense of humor...I can say sorr...I don't care. 🙂
Have a fun. I can't personally wait for FF XV pocket. Hyped!

      • Lickzy

You don't need to apologize and I'm not offended, I just find your fetish weird but hey... different strokes for different folks.

      • Michal Hochmajer

Seriously? 13>15? Dunno, didn't play 15, but thrown away 13 after first few hours and never came back.

Nice and big wording here with fetish/Fictiophilia...except as 3d artist, you haven't other choice then loving pixels'n'polygons. There is nothing bad about praise other artists work.

Thank you, mr. justice warrior for labeling me. 🙂

    • curtneedsaride

I'm going to guess $3.99/chapter, with a special of $29.99 for all 9. I'll buy it either way, though, as long as it's not full of stupid timers or useless IAP.

  • Milotorou

    I.... am not sure.

If its the whole FFXV package though... i guess thats one way to bring it to mobile...

I couldnt play the original game... but im not so sure I want this to be my first time ?

Oh well, Square sometimes surprises us, lets not assume anything before its released, ill at least give it a try.

    • Matthew

I'm in the same boat. I can't play it on the consoles and I'm sure my PC won't run it, so this would be my first and possibly only chance to play it.

At least it's free to try.

  • Dailon Huskey

I am so down for this dont care if the IAP is $50
its the full base game just diff graphics from what i have seen, so glad
i have it on xbox one but i dont play the xbox much when i do its this game would love to have it on the go

    • boydstr

Hi Dailon in your post you say you have the FF XV game on XboxOne I bought not so long ago PS4pro and see some short vids from it but how plays the game on console because never played the older FF games before because the turn based action gameplay in the past but so far I can see this is more an realtime action game and it's looking amazing and I want to buy it.

    • frobadams

      Agree totally

  • Dema9o9ue

Honestly this looks amazing. I'm just so thrilled it's not another Game of War clone. I will definitely play this.

  • gaymerX

As long as it isn't full of IAP shenanigans, I'm in.

  • korossyl

What does "loved the game, not for the story" mean? I haven't played anytging above XII, but up through then, certainly, story was the primary draw of the games...

  • Nightxx

Lazy way of reproducing the game... a scaled down version of the original game would have been better... It doesn't have to be 1:1 conversion.

    • Michal Hochmajer

And who said that. Actually few minutes ago it was said during Gamescom interview, that it will be smaller more casual experience (tap to attack enemy automatically, buttons to mesh special attacks etc.). Let's say, guy said specifically about cooking, that it will be only partial in scale in comparison with the console version. So no worries here.
If every company is THAT lazy...we have some pretty nifty games on mobile. 🙂
      We will see.

  • thesinmaster

I have the original on Ps4 Pro and couldnt get attrackted to it even though I am a huge fan of the series. Will try this one though!

  • Daniel Schroeder

Where's the "watch" button for this?

    • Shaun Musgrave

Shaun doesn't know how to make the Watch button work, sadly. This is the price we pay for midnight news posts.

  • ineptidude

Hey as long as they don't put another frickin IAP gacha mechanic then I'm all for it. Would be nice to have a new pay-once-and-play Square-Enix game on my phone. I think the last one was Adventures of Mana.

    • frobadams

They said very clearly that this will be a 10 episode game with the first episode free

  • Jacob Hoffman

Shaun doesn't know how to make the Watch button work, sadly. This is the price we pay for midnight news posts.

  • ac166

As a mobile only gamer I know basically 0 about FFXV, but just based on the trailer and the pricing model I'm super excited for this 🙂

    • curtneedsaride

I'm a FF fan, and have sunk ~90 hours into FFXV. And I'm so stoked for this! And I'm really glad to see the reaction here for the mobile gaming audience is exactly what they're aiming for. Hope this does well, unlike their other mobile tie-ins.

  • Stan de Boer

Honestly this looks amazing. I'm just so thrilled it's not another Game of War clone. I will definitely play this.

  • frobadams

Everyone can make fun of this all they want, but I LOVE that they are doing this. You are bringing a triple A game to everyone, even if they can't afford or don't have the time to play a console version in all its fidelity

    • Misguided

I like the style of this better than the I'm-so-emo original.

  • curtneedsaride

I've been really wanting a piece of FFXV to carry around and play on the go. And character collecting in the F2P titles (FFRK, FFBE) just doesn't cut it for me. Neither did pinball or city-building. But a premium, offline, FFXV that I can play anytime, anywhere is exactly what I've been wanting! I would have made it 2D in the style of FFVI mobile, but I'll take this happily.

  • curtneedsaride

It's very similar to the Dragon Quest XI model of console and DS versions. Now all Square-Enix needs to do is give us that third way to play FFXV, in 2D.

  • Steph

  • Pagan Fox

It does look cute. I'll give it a try, first chapter is free anyway.
For me the clincher will be how long each chapter lasts vs how much the cost will be.

  • Mysterious Heroine X

This looks great! If they keep it offline and make it purely a single player (no IAP for gacha / equips / whatever) then I'll buy the entire set in one go. If it turns into some server based, constantly downloading assets, and throw in some strange IAP then I'll be disappointed. I'm a bit worried since SQE has been doing this for pretty much all FFXV related spin offs mobile.

  • nagash

    and now we're talking

  • Blucard

Mm. I'll actually wait for this to come out before I put my 2¢ in. 50/50 about it right now though. But if successful, let's get a X, XII and XIII pocket edition as well.

  • Reign

This looks fully dope 💯💯💯. Instabuy
