Get ready for another Final Fantasy [$7.99] sale. Square Enix while known for premium pricing on the App Store for classics, never shies away from a decent sale once in a while. Today’s sale features the older classics. Granted IX [$20.99] and VII [$15.99] are also classics, those aren’t discounted right now. The sale is focussing on the earlier releases. We had Final Fantasy Tactics [$7.99] go on sale and Square Enix finally commented on the 32 bit appocalypse situation for it. Hopefully that gets resolved but today, you get to complete your classic Final Fantasy iOS collection. Most of the games discounted here are pretty damn amazing. Square Enix even went the extra mile with some of the releases doing some excellent touch optimized controls while others haven’t received the attention they deserve.

Let’s start with the essentials then. Final Fantasy IV [$14.99], Final Fantasy V [$14.99], and Final Fantasy VI [$14.99] are top notch games and the ports are great for most people. Final Fantasy IV is a personal favourite of mine and while I have some reservations about the 3D remake that is on iOS, you can’t really go wrong picking it up. Final Fantasy V on the other hand is a remake but remains 2D just like Final Fantasy VI. VI is one of the most popular games in the franchise but V deserves love as well for its job system and Gilgamesh. The three have MFI controller support and are universal. Final Fantasy III [$14.99] (and iPad [$16.99 (HD)]) has controller support but you’ll need to buy it on iPhone and iPad separately if you want it on both as it was from the time Square Enix didn’t do Universal games. I’d reckon a lot of people have Final Fantasy I [$7.99] and Final Fantasy II [$7.99] just as a way to complete the collection or see where the franchise began and has its roots. Final Fantasy IV: The After Years [] is a weird entry for sure and you probably only want it if you really love Final Fantasy IV and absolutely must experience more of anything to do with it.

It isn’t Christmas or anything right now so this sale is on just to make you happy basically. If you’ve been waiting to fill in the gaps, now is the time to stock up. My wish for this holiday season is they finally drop Final Fantasy VIII on the store so I can peacefully sleep at night knowing X is next.

I actually wanna get into this series (since I never played a FF game before), but the storage needed is far beyond my little old iPhone 5c.

    • DanKetch

They're my all time favorite series. 4,6,7,9 are some of the greatest games ever, Chrono Trigger & Secret of Mana are amazing too. I hope you enjoy them if you give them a try, the nice thing is they don't have continuation, so you can play in any order. Have an awesome day! :')

FFI should be around 100mb, II not much bigger, and III is under 300mb. The later ones definitely get huge, and the FF F2P games can take up a good chunk of space, but the early titles should be relatively tiny.

    • Dr T

Check the descriptions before buying for space requirements. FFI is pretty small, while IV and VI are around half a gig iirc.

  • babarth64

Are any of these on Apple's hit list for IOS 11?

    • Akesycu

III is 64 bit for sure. It's the remastered version.

    • curtisrshideler

I think they are all going to be iOS 11 compatible.

    • Milotorou

I purchased every single FF on the app store.

The only one thats 32bit is Tactics, and square promised topoatch it soon after iOS 11 Launches.

No worries, they wont die anytime soon, FF is SE's bread and butter.

  • dancingcrane

FF IV, IV: After Years, and V are all $6.99 on App Store.

  • Dr T

For the record, all of these games are 64 bit and will survive the coming App-pocalypse.

I played through most of these over the course of the summer. They're all fine ports with good post game content. I'd highly recommend FFI, IV, V, and VI. I'd recommend III for completionists. It isn't nearly as bad as has been told. I've rage quit/deleted FFII many many many times. So it's a solid pass.

    • DanKetch

Lol. Totally agreed on all points, II is definitely not memorable and frustrating at times.

    • Milotorou

FF3 is good as well, if you dont mind challenge.

  • uberdan101

FFII is weird, but if you can put up with the crazy "level up" mechanics the story is actually pretty freaking amazing. I do not anticipate replaying it any time soon, but I'm glad I did once.

    • Dr T

It is good if you can deal with a very frustrating experience. I've beat it and the bonus content once. But every later attempt has ended in rage quits. It's a pretty frustrating play.

  • Dailon Huskey

Had them all for a while 🙂

  • curtisrshideler

Time to also check and see if Dimensions has an IAP sale...

  • curtisrshideler

FF Dimensions is also on sale. $7 for all chapters! That's at least 50% off. Time to pick it up!

    • curtisrshideler

If only it had cloud saves.

    • Milotorou

      Its an awesome game.

Cherished it, only FFV had better job system, but its still VERY good !

    • Professionalbum

Would you know if that is 64-bit compatible?

      • curtisrshideler

It was last updated in Summer of 2016 and I think every update for apps past June 2015 had to ensure the app is 64-bit compatible. So, everyone should be able to check the App Store and the last update date.

      • curtisrshideler

So, short answer is yes it is compatible.

  • SSSB

    • Milotorou

Story is good for its time, even though the "keyword" gimmick is awfully poorly executed IMO.

I just hate the leveling system too much to play it again.

  • RAIDERS

Bought my first final fantasy on iOS . FF6 . Cause the price always so high .

    • curtisrshideler

      Good choice!

    • Milotorou

If you never played it before : Be careful, this game might change your view on JRPGs for the rest of your life.

  • Jon

What exactly are the discounts for V, IV, and VI? Nothing special about $15 for a 20+ year old game.

    • HelperMonkey

Showing up as $6.99 on the AppStore

      • Jon

It looks like they updated the article here to reflect the discounts on those games. When I saw it yesterday they were still listed at the regular price.

  • Jinxtah

No sale for FF7 or 9, and still no FF8 on the app store. Meh.

Also, why are my posts needing a manual approval?

"Hold on, this is waiting to be approved by TouchArcade."

    • Michal Hochmajer

"Also, why are my posts needing a manual approval?"
      ...
      Jinx asked
      ... 🙂

      • Jinxtah

        What?

      • Michal Hochmajer

        Sorry, it was joke.
No one really wants "Jinx" (curse) in the house.
TA will consider it and eventually approve it. 🙂

They have tough spam system, but once they will notice (Eli,Jared?), You are good to go, don't worry. You know, there was quite a few jerks around here past years. But don't worry, this happens. Yeah, me too. Even with ok posts (probably for numbers comparison at the time etc., dunno). 🙂

      • Jinxtah

Sure, but look at my original post, and try to figure out what prompted the moderation spam filter. Literally nothing there should trigger such a thing, which probably means I was flagged personally, which again makes no sense, so I was wondering what was going on. Kind of a shame they just approved and moved on, but it is what it is.

      • Michal Hochmajer

Sure. As I said, it is tough. Let's say.
I was reacting on few spam posts as jokes, maybe thats why TA spam filter recognized me later as potential threat? Or arguing with other people on specific topic (fairly long posts) should be problem? Hell, I know?

Sure. Your post is ok, no doubt.
Just don't let it down you. There is chance, that spam filter will completely kick your post off.
If it is normal one, ask Eli directly, TA guys are great, they will help you.

And I am also curious about FF8. 🙂

  • abstractcolors215

Oh how I wish they would come out with FFX! I have them all on my iPhone and I have been playing them since the 90s, the Nintendo and Playstation days!

    • curtisrshideler

I wouldn't be surprised if we see the PS Vita ports of X/X-2 eventually as separate apps. Or maybe even higher res ports. But if still like to see VIIi first.

    • Milotorou

I want VIII and X so badly.

Everything after X are games im not willing to replay anyway, hahaha

  • Cody

WHERE IS FF8!?!?!? I want to play it on IOS so bad!!
