Dial your Wayback Machine to September of 2014 and Ubisoft soft-launched a game called Assassin's Creed Identity in the New Zealand and Australian App Stores. While the Assassin's Creed brand had been on mobile in several iterations before, Identity was the first "true" Assassin's Creed mobile game to mimic the play style of the popular console and PC games, rather than be some sort of branded spinoff. People who jumped in on the soft-launch had tons of great things to say about Assassin's Creed Identity, and it seemed poised to make a big splash for the franchise on mobile. Except… it never came. It just stayed in soft-launch forever until finally disappearing completely from the NZ and AU App Stores last month. As it turned out, all was well with Identity and it was merely pulled for its upcoming full launch which Ubisoft has told us will be later this month on February 25th. Here's a brand new trailer.

Assassin's Creed Identity will have you create and customize your own assassin based on one of four different classes: Berserker, Shadow Blade, Trickster and Thief. Through main storyline missions and "countless" quests you'll unravel The Mystery of The Crows in a number of Italian Renaissance locales like the Santa Croce area in Firenze or the Colosseum area in Roma. There will also be a number of control options including tap-to-move, dual-sticks, and MFi controller support. Surprisingly, Ubisoft says Assassin's Creed Identity will launch for $4.99, which marks a change in strategy from the free-to-play soft-launched version of the game. It's unknown whether it'll have IAPs still or not, but at the very least the soft-launch players all seemed to agree that the IAP was entirely useless in the game anyway. My gut tells me this will be a paid with no IAP at all game, as free to play systems typically feel out of place when they're shoehorned into the more traditional types of games like this one. At any rate, all will be clear on February 25th when Assassin's Creed Identity finally officially launches in the App Store.

It took a long time but, I'd rather they have a well polished game than a rushed buggy game, im sure the wait was worth it

  • LordShad0wz

    I'm in!

  • Bliquid

    Added to watchlist.

  • Rain1dog

Please please please be a full on paid app... And a full game... No base raiding... Timers...

    • speedyph

It's paid I think I'm not sure tho

      • speedyph

Omg face palm it's $4.99 lol

      • Anonomation

It's not paid, there's timers, this is coming from a player.

Coming from the press release I received this morning direct from Ubisoft, the game will be $4.99. Where are you getting your information?

      • Anonomation

        From the game itself

      • curtisrshideler

From the soft-launch game that was free-to-play? Or from the final $4.99 version?

    • boydstr

Totally agree to often releases are spoiled by every kind of ways to let you pay up I hate IAP I have no problem to pay €15,- for a good game!

  • boydstr

I hope that the AppStore release more in my view "real"games the AppStore is full of minimalistic games with zero gameplay and hope to make a "Candy Crush"type hit.

  • H4nd0fg0d

Great game. Played thru it ages ago.

  • luckystrikeguy

    Polygon says it's already out

  • luckystrikeguy

  • starkiller969

Anyone know if it still has timers ??

    • Anonomation

      It does

      • http://twitter.com/JaredTA Jared Nelson

Which version are you playing? If you pulled it out of your purchase history, you have the old free to play version. Did you get a promo code from Ubisoft? That is the only way you'd be playing the version that is coming out on the 25th, and I'd like to know if THAT version has timers.

      • Anonomation

Well I guess I get it for free because the app has been updated, and if timers are gone, cool beans.

      • H4nd0fg0d

Version I played had no timers.

    • Stormourner of the Nature

don't waste your "time" with this question ;P

  • Anonomation

    I lost my data

  • Anova

    That trailer was hilarious.

This came out of nowhere for me, looking forward to trying it out though. Glad to see larger companies are dipping back into the pay up,front model.

    Love the trailer....!

  • ren7486

    Online only?

  • Hazzymandias

I got bored with the repetitive gameplay when playing the soft-launch version. Game looks and plays great at first, but there are only a handful of mission types and locations that you just keep playing over and over again. Think I'll wait for the reviews to see if they changed anything to make it more replayable.

    After 2 years?? o_O'

September, 2014, remember? Seems less than one and a half to me...

  • Mekklesack

    • James Sira

Hey Mekklesack, are you the one and the same Mekklesack that played MC5? The one that named himself Dr. Girlfriend when we all changed the squads?

  • curtisrshideler

If it's paid with no f2p crap, I'm in! If there is still f2p crap in it though, I'll wait for it to go totally free like AC Pirates did. Waste of $7 or so.

  • James Sira

I've been looking for a great, new, console-quality game since Bioshock! This will be perfect!
    ...sigh, Bioshock...

    • speedyph

We will get bioshock back bro

  • Deygus

    Yay! It's about damn time!!!

  • Dinara

I'm a little weary of buying apps as much anymore but I realized that you only buy the time to play them, but never actually own them. I"m still a little hurt over spending 15-20 dollars on Xcom enemy within, and now it's like it never existed and nobody ever made a big deal over that.

  • Mysterious Heroine X

I'm very happy they decided to remove the freemium. I was underwhelmed when I tried the soft launch game but if it's a paid game, I think it could be worth looking at since you won't feel "constrained." I hope to hear good things about this one!

  • waderain

Is it online only? I haven't bought a game in a long time for my iPad because they always seem to be tied to online play only. Sort of lost that mobile feel if I have to constantly be on the net to play.

  • Super Blue

Hope it has cinamatics and a story not just side missions
