As most of you know, Youtube is celebrating ten years of providing us with countless cat videos (which I enjoy immensely) and videos of people failing at simple life tasks. It has also given us countless hours of Let’s Play videos that have shaped, and continue to shape, gaming culture and preferences. So, when Youtube released a list with the 10 most watched games in Youtube history based on “watchtime," my eyes went directly to the name at Number 8, Five Nights at Freddy’s ($2.99). I was seriously amazed to see Scott Cawthon’s horror series anywhere near the top ten most watched games because the series hasn’t even existed for a year.
According to Youtube, the ten most watched titles are:
- Minecraft
- Grand Theft Auto (Series)
- League of Legends
- Call of Duty (Series)
- Fifa (Series)
- Garry’s Mod
- The Sims (Series)
- Five Nights at Freddy’s (Series)
- Puzzle & Dragons
- Dota 2
So, first of all, FNAF is by far the newest title on the list, with the original game of the series coming out in 2014. Minecraft and LOL have been out since ’09 and are played daily by millions. Many of the other games on the list have been out for probably more than a decade and in numerous iterations (Call of Duty has a zillion different versions by now and GTA has over 10). And then you have FNAF, a series that’s existed for less than one year and only has three games in the series, and yet look where it placed. If there were still arguments regarding how incredibly huge this series is (a popularity which, as we recently wrote about, has led to people trying to release fake sequels), this list should put those arguments to rest once and for all.
