Square Enix Montreal released the odd duck Hitman GO [$4.99] weeks ago, but they're tackling the franchise once more with the just announced Hitman: Sniper. This takes a far more traditional approach to the stealthy franchise by being a game about sniping, but exclusively so, similar to the console game Hitman: Sniper Challenge. Levels are claimed to have multiple solutions with leaderboards to make it "massively competitive."

Unlike the premium Hitman GO, this will be a free-to-play game with in-app purchases for upgrades and quicker access to future levels. The teaser trailer above shows a few hints of what to expect: sniping and visuals similar to Hitman GO. No release date has been announced yet, but more details will be released next Wednesday at E3.

After reading that headline I thought, "Yes! Another great Hitman game!" Then, after reading the complete article, and learning that this Hitman wouldn't be paid, I thought, "No! Another one bites the dust."

  • HarryWarden

Why can't they go premium like Hitman GO? Was it not a success?

    • Stormourner

it's the company's choice. if ya want Hitman Sniper to be premium just ask the company nicely

I'm impressed by the Hitman mobile games, they're not throw away mini games with a franchise's skin that EA does nowadays. I assume this has something to do with the whole thing about Squeenix realizing that actual core and niche games have a market, following Brave Frontier being probably their biggest success last year.

It might be free to play, but I'm optimistic. It sounds promising, and I feel like Squeenix will be smart about it.

I love Hitman, so I'm excited.

The fact that yet another beloved franchise will spawn a free-to-play failure just gives me a big old boner.

  • ImJPaul

Can't they just put all their resources to localizing Agito to the States?! 😀

Did the entire TA staff go on vacation and leave you here to write articles? Your articles are just as great as anyone else's, but I'm just wondering where they went.

Everyone went to the Developers Con. than E3 to following week.

  • Eseres

Yeah, I'll give it a try 🙂 I just can't help thinking of ways that they can screw up this game by making it a freemium though 😛 Hitman GO! was a pretty okey game, in my opinion, so Im surpriced they didn't go the same path with this one... The Hitman series are such well known game by gamers, so I don't see why a mobile (paid) version wouldn't do great. Graphics and size doesn't seem to be the problem on mobile devices anymore, judging by other past releases...

This is exactly why I hate Google.

Because they are the company who brings and spreads the idea "free to use" to this world.

Back in old days we pay and we get the product. And nowadays when you play a free product, there is no cap on your expense. Yes, keep playing and keep spending. Pay as you go, PAYG. You pay a lot more than before and the most fearful thing is there is no end.

  • thestapler

"i wanna make one for me, and ten for them."

whatever i'll still play this. Squarenix Montreal has given us a few great titles so far. Maybe the freemium won't be terrible?

  • Dre13

It should be free. This is their way of saying "I'm sorry for charging you $4.99 for that Hitman Go crap"
