Peter Molyneux's development studio 22cans has just soft-launched the iOS version of their "God game" Godus in the New Zealand App Store. Godus is something of a spiritual successor to Molyneux's classic Populous, with some other games he's worked like Dungeon Keeper and Black & White influencing the design. Godus is the result of a successful Kickstarter campaign that ended in December 2012, and this past September a beta of the game was launched on Mac and PC by way of Steam Early Access. It's always been intended as a mobile game too, and 22can's previous iOS "experiment" Curiosity - What's Inside the Cube? plays a part in it by having the person who eventually made it to the center of the cube acting as a God in Godus.

All Molyneux marketing craziness aside, I've definitely been interested to see how Godus turns out, as I enjoyed Black & White back in the day and in general am fascinated by the "God game" genre. I'll be downloading this soft-launch version over the weekend, and if you're a New Zealander or simply have access to a NZ App Store account, you can also give the free download of Godus a spin. No word on when it will officially launch worldwide, but in the meantime you can find early impressions in our forums.

I loved this game! Used to play it on steam / PC all the time. A well crafting town builder / civilization control game. I also loved the card mechanic involved. Looks great though for ios, I wonder if anything is changed. Visuals seem different, can't wait for release. Playing it mobile would be enjoyable

Well crafted? A 'god' game with timers? And your humans don't even grow crops, chop trees, mine, or do any kind of work, forcing you to click parts of the map to find materials that could evolve the civilisation?

  • KeKhan

The game has come a long way during its early access phase for PC on Steam.
Tons has changed, all for the better.
For anyone unfamiliar with this game, give it a shot. It may seem simple at first but the more you play the more you unlock different ways to interact with the world. Not just powers but even gameplay mechanics change as you change the world. It's awesome, there's a LOT going on under the hood.

The game started getting better around the time Bryan Henderson got the last cube and became supreme God. Coincidence? I think not!

    • Godballs

Are you actually joking? Since the refocus on F2P when the game went from version 1.3 to 2.x, so much has been stripped out of the game to make it run on mobile. It's a complete joke of a game at the moment with even less complexity or entertainment and yet the same financial model, as Farmville.

  • vid_icarus

Definitely not enough true blue god sims around these days; and as much as Molyneux can overhype, the man knows his god games.

Although, I'm a little confused.. Isn't this game still considered early access on steam?

    • jdog90000

Oh it is extremely early access. Really not a great game.

    • mutts

      It is!

  • JJE McManus

I'm extremely excited and can't wait to pay this on my iPad
On the other hand: Peter freakin' Molyneux.

  • Spaztika

I have much respect for Molyneux, especially after he spoke out about the stuff with EA. I can't wait to see how this turns out!

    • Jimbob Testetestet

He spoke against it and did exactly the same with Godus.

      • Spaztika

Yeah, I meant he spoke out against it. I had no idea about the negative reviews with Godus until just now. Oh well. I thought this would be different.

  • octopus

Just FYI: 92% reviews on Steam for this game are negative. And it is a paid game on Steam.
Well, who cares, it’s free on iOS. Wasn’t really curious about it anyway.

  • Foghorn Irrascible

I honestly cannot believe the folk praising his highly have even played it. I mean I suppose they must have but... It's terrible, and all that's happened in development on PC is that it got marginally less terrible. Marginally.

Basically, you need to flatten everything. See that wonderful scenery that's been built for you? Flatten it. That's pretty much it.

And click all houses over and over again!

  • tommet

Free to play? Massive negative reviews? Kick starter deception?

I'm thinking it's not worth my cost in bandwidth.

    Peter Molyneux: former car salesman.

      More like future car salesman.

  • nicoper

Im still pissed a bit pissed off about the fact that some random guy who played curiosity for an hour or so got the final cube

  • Solid_Alexei

I was one of the unfortunate sods who got swept by the hype and purchased this shit on Steam.. Literally played for a few days during which the only flippin gameplay involved was clicking land and houses over and over and over again. This game is a rip-off, a cash cow designed to ride on lies spilled from Molyneux's mouth.. It is THAT bad and I'm not exaggerating. Also releasing this 'not even half-finished' game for free on iOS betrays all the players who paid an insanely overpriced sum for this on Steam. It goes against every promise made on Kickstarter and further confirms Moyneux's already infamous reputation..:(

    • dib

Thanks, now I'm not even annoyed the app doesn't even work.

I like how Molyneux did a Reddit AMA recently then spent most of his time dodging questions about how much this game sucks. Do us all a favor and retire already, you hack.

  • Cookies

I don't know what this game is like, but I bet the sequels will suck.

  • Chuck Yeager

Anybody who believes Molyneux is just asking to be fleeced. Yeah, he has made some good games, but along the way he has failed to deliver on his promises more often than not. ...

    • Cookies

The quality of Fables 2 and 3 being excellent examples of that.

  • adz4u28

I really wanted to like this game, I really did. I loved populous in fact I loved most of bullfrogs games.

However this is not anything like I was hoping for, there is some depth to it with the cards but... Other than that u just raise and lower land. Very disappointed. 🙁

  • mutts

It is a tipical Molyneux game.
Lots of promises but in the end a striped down version.
I enjoyed the first version but when they released 2.0 the game became a mobile time management game on the pc. With no depth what so ever. I'm afraid this version is even less inspireing. Will try it though.
