114051_larger1While we still don't have any answers on the fate of Baldur's Gate on the App Store, we now know that it Atari kicked off the recent drama. In an interview with Game Informer, Overhaul and Beamdog president Trent Oster confirmed that Atari requested the removal of the 'enhanced' re-make.

"At the request of Atari legal we removed the game from sale on Beamdog and the App stores," Oster told GI. "Atari is still selling the game through their channels.

We're trying to remedy the situation and I'm hopeful we can come to an arrangement."

Weird. As noted before, these "contractual issues" are also stopping future patches to Enhanced Edition, as well as the creation of Baldur's Gate II and III.

    Thats sucks.

  • samness

    Boo, Atari.

    • MrAlbum

      Hiss, I say, hiss!

  • Baron Cappuccino

When you can't make games, make sure nobody else can either.

  • cofunguy

Also I see on Atari's site that they are selling an iPad version of BG. Very interesting... :(

    • http://tarasis.net/ Robert McGovern

They aren't, they just link to the App Store.

      • Himmat Singh

But it must be there in anticipation of an iOS release

      • http://www.googlepants.com/ Wizard of Odyssey

No, it's simple incompetence. It's Atari, remember?

  • BlueZilla

    Boycott Atari!

  • ImJPaul

    I thought Atari went bankrupt?

    • http://www.googlepants.com/ Wizard of Odyssey

They have, many times over. This is the undead vampire ghost zombie edition of the company. They need to be put down for good.

  • voxinator

Atari is turning into a troll.

They have made good games since they were Changed their name from Infogrames.

  • callmericard0

Digital products are so annoying. Lost count how many times a Kindle book or TV video 'isn't available in your region/on your platform'. No wonder people pirate. My message to Atari - fine - but get it back in the App Store by the weekend!

  • famousringo

Sounds like Atari got greedy and decided they wanted exclusive distribution rights.

  • fredfnord

This is a hypothetical conversation, I have no inside knowledge of the situation. But I still would bet it went down similarly to this (i.e. Activision 'suddenly found' a new contract term to stick them with):

Atari: Hey, we notice that you are distributing an AD&D 2nd edition game. You're going to have to pay us royalties, you know.

Overhaul: Uh, yeah. Baldur's Gate. We licensed it from you, remember? We're already paying you royalties for it.

Atari: Yes, but this other contract with Wizards of the Coast says that we have the exclusive right to publish games based on the AD&D 2nd Edition ruleset. You didn't license THAT from us. Your license only includes the game, not the rules. So we want twice as much in royalties. And some damages. But we'll settle for owning your company.

If this were the case, wouldn't they have pulled the EE from Steam as well? It seems specific to the iOS version, which is what makes this whole thing such a headscratcher.

      • famousringo

The Steam version of BGEE is controlled by Atari. That's why updates on Steam lag updates through App Store and Beamdog.

      • fredfnord

Not specific to the iOS version: the Mac version has also been pulled, and is currently not available anywhere.

  • Tomate Diseño

Atari's now that elderly relative who turns up at family events to complain about dentistry and expects to be the centre of attention while everyone else is pondering "why aren't you dead yet!?"

  • gauthieryannick

Glad I purchased it on day one...!

  • lanights

Don't boycott anything, just steal the app, in protest. After all, it is available on Chinese sites. Google is a friend folks! :)

    • http://ask.fm/MidianGTX MidianGTX

So... most of the disappointment here is directed at Atari, but you want to steal from a completely different set of people in an attempt to make a point that Atari will never, ever notice? If that's what helps you sleep at night... after visiting your Chinese sites.

      • Dams

You try to argue with a pirate ? You just can't, they will take any excuses for justifying they are stealing.

        Nothing to hope here...

  • Eegah

No big deal. Just wait twenty minutes until Atari is bankrupt again and buy the license for a song.

Here is a list of things that Atari has done for me lately:

    1. Killed off Vector Tanks, an amusing and fun game that resembles their old Battlezone arcade game to the extent that an iPad resembles a 1963 Zenith black and white TV.

    2. Run a cynical contest for garage developers to remake Pong, for free, so Atari can keep all the rights.

    3. This nonsense with Baldur's Gate.

It's time for them to die in a fire, and this time, to stay dead.

  • Derprozess

I'd still like to play the other Baldur's Gate with my iPad :(

  • Chris Brady

I knew this would happen. They made no mention of actually having the legal rights to the game when they mentioned that they were starting up this project. And no mention was made after they released it. Why does every blame Atari for these guys being idiots and not doing the research?

    • fredfnord

You have got to be kidding. Do you seriously believe that people just randomly rewrite a high-value game without getting licensing approval?

They have the source code. Do you somehow think that they just randomly happened to find it online or something?

      Jesus.

    • Dams

Sure and that's why atari website is pointing to this app to the app store: because they have no deal...

  • pka4916

    Baldurs gate 3??????????
    Damn u atari

  • 28monkeys

People should listen to both sides before judging especially those young gamers who least understand the history of games

  • Protoman

Atari is still in the process of going through chapter 11 so I don't even see how they're legally allowed to be filing claims right now. They technically aren't a business until the chapter 11 case is resolved. They only filed with the government at the beginning of this year.

    • Dams

Well, not everybody is a lawyer ;)

  • HelperMonkey

The word "Gate" is the exclusive intellectual property of Atari.

  • deviantsin

    Shit game anyway who cares
