halospartanassaultA couple of weeks back, Microsoft announced that a new top-down, dual-stick Halo game was in the works and that it would be exclusive to the Windows platforms. The big question was, with Windows tablet and phone sales being less than stellar, would this game known as Halo: Spartan Assault eventually make it to the much, much, much larger iOS and Android user base? We still don't know the answer to that, but Spartan Assault was playable on the E3 show floor so we figured what the heck and gave it a spin. It actually seemed really cool, check out our quick hands-on with it below.

The thing about this is that I think Windows mobile devices are fine, but nobody is really buying them. For such an online and competition focused title like this, having a strong user base seems paramount. Will Microsoft stubbornly stick to keeping it Windows exclusive in hopes of increasing sales of their mobile devices or will they allow the rest of us in on the fun? We'll just have to wait and see what happens, but as a pretty big Halo fan there's nothing I'd like more than to see this bad boy running on my iPad and iPhone. Cross your fingers.

This game coming to iOS right alongside the new iOS 7-embedded controller add-ons would be fantastic.

$85 an hour! Seriously I don't know why more people haven't tried this, I work two shifts, 2 hours in the day and 2 in the evening…And whats awesome is Im working from home so I get more time with my kids. Heres where I went, -- Gig60.cℴm

        You don't say.

I would love to give Microsoft my money for a Halo mobile game, or even better yet, a Microsoft Office app. But I'm not willing to get in bed with them to do it.

These stifling measures of exclusivity are going to backfire on these companies that choose to employ them. It's worked ok in the past, but the rules are changing.

If you limit how consumers can enjoy your offering, they will go somewhere else. Just test us, Ballmer.

Reignmaker, Microsoft did finally add MS Office....for 365 subscribers...

But hey we're getting close right.

    • Reignmaker

Eh, I guess that's better than nothing. Thanks for the info though. Will look into it.

Screw Microsoft let them be arrogant about having it exclusive to windows phone they're just hurting themselves how stupid can one be iphone sells triple or more phones than a windows phone

  • curtneedsaride

Yup. Neat looking game that I'm NOT going to be buying a device to play. Seems like a lot of work on a game to let it just play on Windows tablets that nobody wants. Eh, I'll keep playing NOVA 1-3, and forget that Halo ever existed.

    • Himmat Singh

You can play it on a Windows 8 laptop/desktop too.

      • curtneedsaride

That's a good idea to spread it to their computer users. I think I have Windows 7 on a PC at home that I rarely use anymore. So, in theory I could probably upgrade and get it. But eh. I hate sitting at a desk to game. I like to grab a pipe and cup of coffee and game on my porch. Way more relaxing.

  • epikninja

As a halo fan, I wanna play this sooo bad, but not bad enough to buy another phone..

    • Himmat Singh

Well, if you have a Windows 8 laptop/desktop, you'll be able to play it as well...

  • Himmat Singh

"The thing about this is that I think Windows mobile devices are fine, but nobody is really buying them."

You are conveniently forgetting that this game will be playable on any device running Windows 8, not just WP8 or Windows RT devices (any app/game uploaded to the Windows store for Windows RT tablets must run on regular Windows 8 devices as well). If it's priced competitively at $4.99, you can be millions of PC gamers will be getting it, since HALO isn't present on PC either.

    • megamouth99

Halo:Combat Evolved and Halo 2 are on PC

  • Sam Russell

I Would be as skeptical as you, IF the game was only coming to windows mobile devices... Halo spartan assault will also be playable on non touch/non mobile windows 8 devices such as my home pc. You'll be able to use the keyboard and mouse.

Talk about wishful thinking. This is MS's flagship series. It would undermine their entire business to port this to ios, android, or Nintendo & Sony systems right now. Maybe in 5 to 10 years as a way to show people on other platforms what their missing out on, but not now. There are people out there that value halo enough to buy a device for it alone just like there are fans of other series. My personal weakness is Shenmue. Port that as a windows phone exclusive and I'd consider that seriously for my next phone

Riight..and next month Apple will announce Final Cut Pro for Windows because Mac sales are bad, right? 😉
Halo is exclusive franchise meant to sell devices. Heck, they don't even release most of those games on Windows, let alone on iOS or Android. If Spartan Assault will ever be in dire need of more sales Microsoft will port it to Xbox 360, Xbox One and Windows 7, not to iOS.

Microsoft can't seem to make any smart decisions. They are at the bottom everywhere you look.

    - Windows mobile is fighting with Blackberry for last place in the mobile world.

    - Windows tablets are near the bottom and can't outsell the iPad, Nexus 7, or Kindle Fire.

    - XBox One has had nothing but bad publicity since being announced. The choice to require gamers to check in daily and no option to play used games has been a disaster.

Now they want to release a game exclusive to a platform which will limit overall sales and in the end generate less money...another bad move. Somewhere the Zune and the Kin are laughing.

  • Chris Dresher

They should add multiplayer and make it like a better deadlock online

  • Sherak

Lol.... You guys sound like Playstation fanboys before they became Xbox fanboys 🙂

News flash! Microsoft make a game for their own system! Shock horror! The tragedy of it all! Lol...

  • Onikage725

This is a first party IP. it will only be on Windows 8 machines. Which, as stated, includes PC, phones, and tablets...and also rumored on Xbox One.
