You want a new endless runner that changes up the formula. I think I found one. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rooftop Run is one of tonight's bigger ticket releases because of the branding, but it's also one heck of a runner that nimbly mixes combat with scaling and jumping, as well impressive QTEs.

At the top-level, this is just like any other runner. You pick your favorite turtle at the beginning and just jump across roof to roof, all turtle-like. Soon, though, you'll be acquainted to the combat system, which has you tapping on foot soldiers and various other TMNT villains and taking them out. Play a little longer and you'll see some more of the game's base mechanics, including wall-running and double-jumps. When you finally get to put all this together, you'll kinda discover that this is a game about juggling your turtle, chaining him into enemies and double-jumping into the next or maybe wall-running into another combat instance before springing up higher into the rooftops. At the end of the day, what you get is a runner with a heck of a sense of locomotion and verticality, which is definitely rare in this fairly stale genre.

There's a couple of other mechanics outside of this. Most notably, you'll need to pick up lots of green orbs. These are used as basically energy, which allow you to keep runs going. If your energy bar gets into the red, the run ends. Another notable: at certain points in a run, you'll have to fight in a QTE against several members of the Foot. The one we've seen so far, just required specific taps on points on the screen to progress.

As you kill bad guys (or knock out or break or whatever happens in the TMNT universe to the dudes the turtles hit with their fairly dangerous weapons) you'll earn coins. With these, you can buy upgrades that modify damage or jumping and stuff like that. Also, you can buy these through IAP, if you're feeling up to it.

But even without breaking the bank, this is a pretty rad game -- and surprising for it, no less. The last thing I expected to do today was dig a modern TMNT game. If you're up for another runner, give this a shot when it hits later tonight.

  • MrSpud

So what's the deal? No more "coming out tonight" single post where everything is nice and organized? What's the logic behind that?

    • metalmandave83

Yes, please put everything in one post.

      • Illuminerdy

    • tunaW

Single "Coming out tonight" posts only get a few words for each game. These are a lot more in-depth.

      • dancj

I like the "few words for each game" format.

      • MidianGTX

And there I was ignorantly assuming there was a point to having a forum.

      • Greyskull

I'm sick of getting notifications for every single game. I'm going to have to turn TA's off.

    • timmfox

    • blackout845

So these guys go out for their way to find new and exciting games for you..take the time to write indepth reviews for you, make an app thats convenient for everyone. And you still have nerve to complain??? Spoiled kids these days geez!!

    • TheEvilRobot

Please put everything in one post.

I liked reading about which games people were gonna get rather than having to switch back and forth between articles.

  • Wizard_Mike

Yes! I'm not the biggest fan of runners, as I usually become bored with the fairly quickly, but I'm

    • Wizard_Mike

      ?..dang it! lol.

Was going to say: But I'm totally retarded over just about anything TMNT (still have some of my old VHS tapes and Tiger electronic games from my childhood, lol). I'll be buying this the second it hits the store, for no other reason than it being a Turtles game. Yeah, consumer marketing scores some more bucks! lol. Luckily it sounds like it's a pretty decent game, too.

      • MidianGTX

I just looked at one of the screenshots, and there is no way in hell that bizarre, amorphous blob can be considered a Ninja Turtle.

      • Wizard_Mike

You clearly haven't watched the new series on Nick yet. I was put off by the art style of the new show, too, but the show has really turned out to be a winner. It's like a good mix between the original 80's cartoon, the 1990 live action movie, and a little modernization. The art style grows on you after a few episodes.

      • dariusjr98

+1. I expected for the cartoon to bomb, but I was pleasantly surprised. PLEASANTLY surprised. My little brother, dad, and I all watch this. It's the perfect mix of humor and action.

  • JCman7

I kind of agree with everyone else it's a little bit of an annoyance to have all the coming tonight posts separate. I understand that it brings you more page views but its just an annoyance for your readers. I do appreciate the extra work in writing more lengthy posts about the games though, so I don't want to take anything away from that

    • Eli Hodapp

Posting about video games on a video games site is an annoyance to our readers, now I have officially heard it all.

      • elswitzer

Did he say "don't post anything" or "don't post in the way you are doing it now"?

      • Jeremy D

Wow- Eli, that type of reply could seriously lose you some readers! JCman7 just seemed to be giving some constructive criticism.

The large batch of "coming tonight" games in a single post is one of the primary reasons I read this site, and use your app. And seeing all these posts was confusing to myself (and others it seems). Don't fix it if it ain't broken.

      • MrSpud

That has nothing to do with what he said, he’s talking about the difference between posting all the games in one convenient but brief post or having multiple, scattered but in-depth posts.

      • Wizard_Mike

Kind of a knee-jerk reply there, Eli. He didn't say posting about games was an annoyance. He simply said the post spam format is a bit of an annoyance. It doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I like it better this way. But I visit TA from the TA app. I imagine visiting TA on a normal browser might be more of a pain when so many posts are being published at once, because (if there are enough) you might not see all of the "coming tonight" posts on the front page.

        Don't be so jaded! πŸ˜‰

      • JCman7

Thanks guys for backing me up on this. I almost didn't comment because I had a feeling Eli would not respond very nicely but I was trying to make it very constructive and not offensive. It is an annoyance to me because I have to keep checking back every time I get a push notification which I am getting tons of throughout the day today. It is an annoyance that is all. Just constructive criticism from a long time reader. It was much simpler just reading one post about the coming tonight games. I could understand a separate post for a big game such as the new Halbrick game but for TMNT? I just don't get that. I don't know why you need to always respond so sarcastically when someone gives their opposing opinion on an article or what have you. We all have opinions and we are just sharing them that is all. Take input from your readers or not, in the end it is always up to you guys at TA. Obviously it's something you guys have not done before so it's a learning experience is it not? I'm sure you wanted feedback on it

      • Eli Hodapp

TMNT will likely do equally well on the charts as Fish Out of Water, as nostalgia stuff typically blows up like nothing else. If the push alerts are annoying to you, you can turn 'em off and you'll just get the featured story push alert when games go live at 11:00 Eastern.

      • JCman7

I know you hate notifications cause you always say that during TA Plays so you must keep them off for most of your apps but for me I like notifications but when they are spammy it is unfortunate I just didn't think the TA app would be like this and to have to try and monitor when to turn them off and on would be pointless. I will just put up with them I guess, there is no other choice. I still want my TA news! πŸ˜‰ Wait so you are telling me if you turn notifications off you will still get the featured story notification?

      • Eli Hodapp

        Yep, that's how I roll actually. πŸ™‚

We only feature really important or otherwise cool stuff.

      • JCman7

Oh and also I agree TMNT will do well. I mean it is free afterall as well. I will be downloading it. I just merely used it as an example because there have been so many posts I can't even keep track of what games are coming out lol

      • dariusjr98

        Way to be professional...

  • Zeldaniac

"You want a runner that adds something different."

When did I ever say I wanted any runner, ever?

  • dancj

Maybe the ideal setup is for TA to do posts like these for each game and then at the end of the day do a summary post - much like the old post, but with links to the longer articles that you can go to for the games that look interesting.

    • T.J.

Perfect. I'd like to see a release roundup. And then search for the in-depth pieces for games I may be interested in reading more.

    • Eli Hodapp

That's what we're doing, except that post will go live at 11:00 when you can actually download the games.

      • starmonkey101

id rather read about the games before they come out, not simultaneously.

      • MidianGTX

That's something of a negative for the rest of the world. The Coming Tonight post would often be up before the games released here in the UK, now it's going to be almost half a day late.

      • Eli Hodapp

We've individually posted about all the games being released tonight, in much greater detail, earlier than we typically post the "Coming Tonight" stuff which I schedule for 7 PM Central. Each of those stories have iTunes links.

      • starmonkey101

      • MidianGTX

Oh okay, I thought you hadn't finished with them yet. If the majority are done throughout the day it's not such a biggie.

      • toxiccheese

Thanks for clearing that up. Now we just need to get used to this new expanded way of getting the information out to the readers. I'm sure I'll get used to it. Don't worry about the complaints, loyal hardcore readers (like me) are usually opposed to change. Thanks again!

  • oooooomonkey

I'm not digging this new one post per game thing you got going on. Please just do the usual one post with all the games on it.

  • blackbear219

Wow, people will really complain about anything.

  • MrSHakerEsq

Hate the new multiple 'coming tonight' threads. Some of us lead busy successful life's and only require a quick concise summary of what's actually 'coming tonight'. Not an in depth review of each new games little nuances. If you're going to post multiple threads then at least post one simple one summering everything that's actually 'coming tonight'.

    • Pray For Death

Trust me, the fact that you lead a successful life doesn't make your argument any stronger.

Also, this has already been discussed in previous comments.

      • Wizard_Mike

He's too busy and successful to be wasting time reading previous comments.

      • Chester_Copperpot

        Likewise with learning English.

    • dariusjr98

Was the "busy, successful lives" part even necessary? Don't rub it in people's noses, pal.

    • Silverfist

I'll go ahead and presume that your "busy, successful life" is NOT as an editor.

  • thiefwriter

In all honesty, I like the new setup. More info at an earlier period with standard TA flair. I figure I'll actually be used to it here in a week or two, and even now I can see the overall benefits. I think it'll be a good thing πŸ™‚

  • Holcman

Look, guys, you should really stop complaining about the setup. I really don't care either way it goes. You guys should be happy to just be able to have this app, rather than complain about everything that you don't like. Besides, that comment Eli posted earlier was easily sarcastic. I mean, really, if anyone else posted that, no one would have even noticed.

  • armilla

Really surprised to hear all this hating on the new format. I'm very pleased to have in-depth analysis and some familiarity with what's coming out on release night sooner than 7 p.m. I also enjoy the round-up, but not when it's like all of those dud weeks earlier this year - the new format would take some of the sting out of it. Just do both as they did today!

  • jamieladc

Another endless runner you say? Well I guess the 12,000 endless runners already on iOS just aren't enough.

    • Wizard_Mike

Hey, at least it's not Turtles Initiative: Sewer Lockdown (aka Infinity Nunchucks), lol. Or even worse, A pizza cooking game like the one on the TMNT/Nick website...

  • MMMick

I like Cheese. Is that going to be a problem with anyone?
