Earlier this month, an interesting new puzzle-like dungeon crawler was released called Dungelot [$0.99]. It had you moving from floor to floor deep down into a randomly generated dungeon, collecting items and fighting monsters for as long as you possibly could last. What really made Dungelot work was how well-suited it was to mobile. Each floor was a 5x6 grid of covered tiles and tapping each one would reveal it and its surrounding tiles, uncovering items, treasures, enemies, and more. It felt a little like Minesweeper, and was a perfect fit for a touchscreen and gaming on the go.

Despite a few rough edges we really enjoyed Dungelot in our review, and right now you can snag the game for free for a limited time. The gameplay demo video below is a bit old, but it should give you a good idea what Dungelot looks like in action.

We are huge fans of taking one type of game and slapping some RPG-ish elements on top of it, and Dungelot does this really well. Based on the information in our forums, it sounds like there are plenty of neat updates planned for the game as well. Dungelot went free over the weekend so it's anybody's guess as to how long it will keep on being free, so don't hesitate to head to the App Store and grab it during this promotion.

The game isn't free on the Malaysian App Store.

    • acidkl0wn

Isn't free in the german AppStore as well :/

    • meadowman

      Not free in Singapore either.

      • Phoenix24

You guys should check the forums. All price drops are reported as soon as they go live, and seeing as this game is worth the full price, I am happy to see the freebie over. Just buy it folks :D

  • Phoenix24

A game I can see will stay in my device for a long time.

Seems perfectly suited to the iPhone and reminds me of the game 10000000 in some ways as you level up your character to get further and further, but unsure if there is an end goal planned.

Has a real addictive quality and perfect for on the go gaming, where there is a lot of luck trying to the lantern, compass etc as soon as you can to have any chance of getting very far.

If you don't already have this I would 100% recommend you do, and if you like it, gift it to a couple of friends once the sale is over.

Games like this deserve success IMO, as there are too many crappy freemium titles clogging up the AppStore.

  • iNemzis

Not free in the NZ store, either. Bummer. Have the lite version, and quite enjoy it.

  • ShanE-O

Not on Australian App Store either sadly :(

  • busgamer

Not free on the UK App Store either.

This game is great! I still play it even after getting max level for every character type. I hope they add some new stuff soon!

  • Gamer_Kev

Thanks for the heads up. Though this kind of genre mixing doesn't really sound like my cup of tea, for free I'll give it a try. Who knows, I might end up enjoying it.

  • Mister Bump

I call BS. Says its free in the app description, but clearly isn't. What a crock!

    • http://twitter.com/jakewastaken jakewastaken

What a coincidence. I call stupidity. Prices vary by country. You win some you lose some.

      • Mister Bump

        It isn't free anywhere retard.

      • REkzkaRZ

        Maybe it was free somewhere?
Can you please move past the "retard" flaming? Just a request -- it makes you look like a moron lacking most social graces.

  • Rev Maynard

Not free in US either. Where exactly is this free?

  • Chaos_Eternal

Game isn't free in American App Store.

    • Jerutix

It must have gone paid again. It was definitely free yesterday (not that that helps).

  • cofunguy

Yes was free until 11 pm eastern...

  • Mj1ggy

It seems to have been free for a pretty short time...glad I nabbed it right away

  • ibmurai

The article was posted at least 36 hours after it went free and it seems there was only hours left :( too slow, ta!

  • homosaur

Was free, not anymore. Totally worth the $2 though

  • seinfeld95

    "Went free over the weekend..."
Well, thanks for posting this TODAY, you stupid f*cks.

    • themostunclean

TA never posts articles on weekends. They do have lives outside of work and don't spend every waking moment catering to ungrateful brats who call them names.

      • http://twitter.com/tribalplague Gilbert Palau

Sorry bro, but the news business never sleeps.

      • themostunclean

I'd hardly call this the "news business". I've been following for years now and they rarely if ever post on weekends. They're a great group of people there is no excuse for slinging profanity at them and act like spoiled babies.

I know 3 year olds that are better behaved and more respectful than you are.

    • homosaur

Hey moron, this is not news, but games. Don't kid yourself on the importance of this. Besides, if you have such a hard on for sales, you should use AppShopper or some other thing MEANT for this sort of thing and not cry that TA won't hold your hand every second. Don't be such a self entitled little twat.

  • HelperMonkey

It's two damn dollars! Start a riot!

  • mrTofu

I got it when it was free, but that was yesterday. I check the forums daily on latest free games.

  • orangecan

It's been free for a few days at least since Saturday on the uk store..... Bought it at full price and don't regret it for a minute.

    • Bloodangel

I checked yesterday and today and it says it's still 1.49 :(
      I'm in UK too

  • themostunclean

Really fun game. Still just boils down to luck over skill. Entertaining nonetheless.

I must have gotten it only seconds before it went back to paid.

  • http://rekzkarz.com/ REkzkaRZ

Appshopper shows game as free from 1/27 - 1/29. Mistakes have been known to happen, but they said "Free for limited time" in their description.

    • REkzkaRZ

Btw, I paid $1 for it before it went free. Reviews inspired me to support the dev.

It's not my 'all-time-fav', but it was def worth $1 ... maybe worth more. Def replayable game.

And how hard is it to give $1 to a small dev and skip a $10+ weak-sauce game from mega-corp?

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/kbrinks Gemütlichkeit

Surprised how much I've enjoyed this game so far. It scratches an itch with dungeon crawlers that most can't fulfill. So simple, so casual.

  • http://twitter.com/tribalplague Gilbert Palau

    It's not free anymore... :(

  • kaibosh

This feels.... Like a disgusting and obvious trick to make us buy this game. Guess what, it is working.
