Earlier this morning, Eli and I spent some time with Ravenous Games' Beatdown [$2.99]. It's a 2D brawler, similar to brawlers of old. In the game, you're tasked with punching everything that gets in your way as you wander through environments loaded with dudes who also like to punch everything that gets in their way. You have two attacks: a punch and jump kick. You can also pick up weapons in the environment and hit people with them, too, if you're feeling sassy.

You can knock this one for its old-school nature. The scenario design, combat mechanics, and the enemy design aren't all that interesting in a modern context. But, Beatdown will definitely stroke some pleasure centers with it's simplistic action, and it might even bring back some good memories in the process.

Anyway, check it out and see if it clicks with you. We're digging it:

I was expecting more; some skills, upgrades, even just some health items...absolutely nothing. Punch, kick, walk. The game crashes too often as we'll (4th gen touch)

    No coop? Bad.

I'm sharing the same kinda meh feeling with Eli; really digging the game but wanted so much more to give it their own signature flare. Time will tell....

The gameplay mechanics are great, smooth. The weird part is I always expect more bad guys or destroyable/interactive items scattered throughout the levels. It's very barren right now.

I was expecting more River City Ransom fullness I guess...

    iCade support! Good.

Do you guys think this game is worth it? I've heard it's got excellent reviews, would like to check it out. Watched the "TA Play's" video on the game so I can see what it's like, and I do like what I see.

I have played Random Heroes, and found that game amazing. Does this mean Beatdown will be?

  • osvd

Random heroes is a big failure so this game

    • dariusjr98

I disagree. Random Heroes wasn't perfect, but by no means was it a terrible game. There are a lot worse games in the App Store, now stop complaining.

  • Ultradud

It's pretty worthless. It's well made but very poorly executed. What u see in the vid is what u get the whole entire game dude! It's def not like double dragon or river city ransom at least there were skills to be used and throws and such

I'm surprised about the controls. I found them difficult to use compared to Random Heroes and League of Evil. Strange too since the others were so well done.

Same here I'm stuck on the big cop guy, I think at the end of level 2, and I keep trying to switch my controls cause all of them suck. Are you guys playing on an iPad or iPhone? With the phone it's control options almost make it unplayable...

    Does it have iCade support?
