A group of long-time industry veterans have joined forces to create a new studio called Bitmonsters, and the team has signed on to bring multiple titles to the mobile platform using the Unreal Engine, Epic Games told us today. The first of these games is called Lili, an adventure RPG set in a luscious 3D world. I'll go ahead and let the first trailer for Lili speak for itself.

So far there aren't a very many details about Lili. We know it takes place on an island named Geos inhabited by some very interesting characters, and the tone of the game seems to be lighthearted and quirky. Also, Lili will use a "non-combat" system for battling with enemies, which we're not really sure what that means but it sounds intriguing. Lili is in the final stages of development and should hit in the "coming weeks", and until then you can discuss the game in our forums.

These teasers always make me wonder whats so wrong in the game play, that they have to keep hiding. Teaser is a teaser, ok, but this is not a way to tease a game in my opinion.

I always feel this too. I don't understand why companies will show the barest minimum of their games, and never the crucial gameplay element. Look at shadow sun, are we ever going to see any details for that? 2 years of "soon, we're really close to showing you anything at all".

    Looking forward to it :D

Tomb Raider, anyone? Lara Croft at 12 years old... yeah, I'd probably hit that.

    • PervertPatrol

       uh... what?

Gross. Even grosser if the 1977 in your handle is your birth year and you're 35.

She's like an adorable, nerdy Lara Croft.  Graphics look great, too.  I really want a good RPG to get into - maybe this will be the one.

Looks great! There's a shortage of good third person adventure games in the store.

I'm expecting this to be long enough not to fall under the tech demo category... animations look a bit crappy but the graphics and general feel of the game more than make up for that! Also, the island and those little wooden robots kind of remind me of machinarium... Now, a 3D unreal powered machinarium is something I'd love to play... In the meanwhile I think this will be a great thing to play

What next gen console is this game coming out on?

    • NPeart

Yeah right. Mobile only players are easy to please.

Looks gorgeous. Can't wait until it is released.

"Lili will use a "non-combat" system for battling with enemies"  - speaking as a dev, it's unfortunate that damn near all games have to rely on killing stuff, simply because "subtracting from a count of hitpoints" is so easy to code, in a world where coding is so difficult that one is lucky to get anything out the door.  For better or worse, the coding complexity problem is intractable, but at least it'd be nice to see some thematic efforts to dress up "depleting a number" in something other than killing.

One brainstorm idea that just occurred to me, from seeing the trailer, is clockwork enemies who are far to tough to damage - but who only have a certain amount of windup, and every action they take (especially anything requiring lots of strength) depletes it until they grind to a halt.  Where "combat" is about the same depth of fast-paced movement, but rather than attack, it's about evasion.  Or possibly about gumming up the works.

Hopefully someone makes a game out of that idea. :)

If the game can match the quality of the visuals this could really be something.
Probably a 2 gig download, though.

Hopefully they'll add decent iCloud gamesaves so we an delete or install the game as we please without loosing saves.

  • OniMitch

Looks fantastic, looking forward to seeing more.

Does this have something to do with Fiji. It has a Fiji theme from the way the name is presented at the end of the video.

This looks very interesting the little bit we get to see. Graphics and music suggest a slowed Dow pace compared to many games but no gameplay is really even suggested and that makes me suspicious. This game could be really fun and interesting and hopefully there will be a good plot line but the chance for a complete dud are still possible for sure. Hope it is as good ad the teaser suggests . I look forward to the release and would love Eli or Jared try it out if it warrants their time. Anyone have any kind of time frame when we may get to see it at least close to completion , a teaser trailer or something more? Love your reviews and commentary while playing a game. Even a game I may not be interested in is still fun to watch those guys go back and forth during gameplay. Thanks and keep it up. I check in every day to see what is happening. I rely on your reviews exclusively cuz you r usually spot on. The app store "featured" games must be totally bunko. How did the Simpson game become their #1 on free apps list? Almost all of the reviews by users was terrible and people got ripped off etc. I do not mind paying 4.99 for a game if it is worth it. Nothing drives me crazier than those freemium games that annoy the hell out of u with ads and the actual cost u have to put out eventually to play the whole game. Why not make gamers achieve a certain level in order to unlock the next one and charge everyone an amount that covers the entire game . Might give people incentive to beat it and taking a chance paying more but knowing player must achieve a certain level or whatever in order to unlock the next part.
Back in the day (I am talking Nintendo donkey king Mario bros etc) one thing that kept us so motivated to keep trying because we knew we had to get thru a certain level or levels to 1 save the game up to that point 2 the goal was to finish the whole saga and get 100% of the game completed and getting thru each world or level etc kept some of us up all night. Granted we were kids and Mario bros was not like some of the games today but I wish I could get a Mario Bros 2 game on my iPad! Long live yoshi. Damn we had fun..

    "Non-combat system"

Damn. I was looking forward to kicking ass. Now we have to go to hello kitty island adventures...mind the island pun.
