We've been incredibly excited for Madfinger Games' Shadowgun since we first saw it actually running on an iOS device back at E3. Before then, the games' Gears of War-like graphics seemed almost too good to be true. Either way, I'm loving this engine war that's starting to brew between Unity and the Unreal Engine on the App Store, as it seems both are totally capable of jaw-dropping graphics on mobile devices.

Take a look at the trailer:

If all goes as planned, and trends from previous weeks stay true, we should have Shadowgun in our grubby little hands next Wednesday at 11:00 PM Eastern. If you're to the east of North America, you'll potentially have it much earlier. Exciting, right?

Graphics are obviously amazing but I hope they don't neglect the play part. For example, I did not see any melee attactks, throws, grabs, grenades, sniping, jumping.....

    looks great

maybe the first real event level game for ios
    great work

And what about Infinity Blade and Dead Space?

      • Anonymous

I never found Dead Space that good? The graphics aren't all that IMO. Infinity Blade is far more technically advance I think.
Anyway, cannot wait for this one, fantastic looking game. Should be a cracking 3 months for iOS graphic power house games :)

Dead Space gives the best gaming experience on iOS I've ever had. Try playing it on hard mode, at night, with headphones on. The atmosphere is awesome, and it actually has a nice storytelling that doesn't feel generic like most iOS games.

Sure, Infinity Blade looks pretty, but it's skin-deep. It's enjoyable for a few minutes, but you'll get laughed at by any serious gamer.

In my opinion, technically advanced does not always mean good game.

Dead Space was great IMO. Infinity Blade on the other hand, whilst having nice graphics was just a boring swipe game, doing things over and over and over again.

with all do respect to those titles, they dont have the same potential.

all the other games sold because the IOS devices were hot and the games looked good.

this one has the potential to reverse the trend.
this game, if its as good as it looks,

         will help sell IOS devices.

every genre helps sell devices.  i would never buy the ipad for this type of game, even though i would probably buy the game itself.  I would however buy the ipad for the plethora of tower defense games on the platform.  (i have the ipad already, waiting for the 3rd version to upgrade though).

someone else would buy the device for the match3, or this, or that or...

i think the hardcore crowd thinks they're bigger than they really are, they're definitely the most vocal, since they like to blab and brag about how great they think they are, but they're hardly even close to huge.  the huge crowd is the casual crowd, that loves the angry birds/farmville/etc type of stuff.  THEY'RE the ones driving the sales/profits.

Shadowgun looks great, but I think The Dark Meadow looks even better. I don't have time to play both games, so I'll be picking up The Dark Meadow next week...instead of buying Shadowgun tomorrow.

I wanna know... why do all games these days (console and pc as well) have to be SO SHINY!?!  Look at his forehead in every scene... it's solid white as if the glow is just SO INTENSE!!  I saw a zombie game commercial the other day with the same deal going on.  Half of every scene was completely washed out white because of the super intense glow.  Nothing in reality ever looks this way... who's idea was it to make this a trend?

    Fucking tickers.

Looks amazing. The devs havent dissapointed, so we'll see?!?!

Everyone get ready for the flood of complaints from people with old devices which can't run these UE3 games at anything other than snail's pace. I very much doubt these would even run acceptably on an iPhone 4.  iPad 2 and iPhone 5 only.

30 FPS confirmed by Madfinger for iPod Touch 4th Gen.

      • http://twitter.com/Inaba_kun Phil Baxter

30fps on old devices with the same visual fidelity in the trailer? If that's the case, I'm impressed. The GPU in the iPhone 4 and iPad 1 is absolutely ancient and really underpowered.

      • http://twitter.com/MattRix MattRix

Who knows if it'll be the exact same visual fidelity, but it'll probably as close as they could get it while still keeping solid 30 fps. I don't know how you can say the GPU in a devices that came out last year is "ancient".

      I'm not complaining :|

It's not UE3, it's Unity, which runs great on older devices. It's built to scale down nicely.

  • Kistajk

Not only Gears of War, now they managed to put Hannibal Lecter and Bicentennial Man.

    Did Gameloft fund this project?

    • Anonymous

Nah, the voice acting's too good.

      • Anonymous

What do did there, I saw it.

Lol, I like that reference, but every game takes some of their ideas from film. Every sci fi game ( including Gears of War) takes ideas from another. Soldiers fighting aliens or mutants in a post apocalyptic setting is not original.

      • Kistajk

Yeah everything takes inspiration from everything else. Hannibal Lecter takes inspiration from a dog, thus the mask. Mickey Mouse takes inspiration from a mouse. But come on, when they see the trailer, it's just obvious where they got their ideas from.

But at least it's not as bad as Gameloft. Now that's a rip-off!!

      • JohnnyJ301

I agree with you about where Shadowgun  got some of their ideas, which is fine . As far as Gameloft is concerned call them what you want, but if it wasn't for this company, there would be no good FPS war games on iOS. Mc2 is a great game, Mc3 looks even better. I have a feeling when Modern combat 3 comes out, there won't be a better game in the app store.

  • Ciaran O'Brien

Apparently, this will run 30fps on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch 3rd Gen (32GB + 64GB) and iPod touch 4th Gen.
However, on iPad 2 this game will run at 60fps! Nice!

That does mean that iPhone 3G, iPod touch 2nd Gen and iPod touch 3rd Gen 8GB aren't supported, but that was expected anyway. I'm amazed that they even run on 3rd Gen devices!

  • Ciaran O'Brien

There is going to be problems with the game:
For a start, how big is it going to be? 2GB? 3GB? More?Secondly, how long is the game going to be? Infinity Blade was WAY too short. All they did to extend it is added a level up system and collectable equipment. I know SHADOWGUN is just an iOS game, but please make it last more than an half an hour. Then there's performance and graphics. You can see how great it runs and looks on the trailer, but that is clearly the iPad 2 version. How will it run on iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS? Will there be graphical reductions for the less powerful iPod touch's? We already know these devices will run the game at 30fps, but we haven't actually seen game-play from any devices apart from the iPad 2.

For a game of this quality, what will we have to pay? I'm personally prepared to pay up to £5 (7.70 USD), but more casual games usually spend only 69p (99c) on apps, and I highly doubt it will be 69p. If it is around £5, what will the sales be like, considering very few will fork out that much cash just for a mobile game?

This could be a winner, or a massive fail. Either way, I'll still get it.
