Gameloft just announced that they have made a long term, multi-platform licensing agreement with Epic Games, Inc for the Unreal Engine 3. Julien Fourniais, Vice President of Production at Gameloft had this to say:

“Gameloft is very pleased to partner with Epic, especially with their ability to stay ahead of the curve and continually place the best game engine technology in developers’ hands at any given point in time. Using Unreal Engine 3 allows us to push game visuals with remarkable lighting and high-fidelity environments. We are confident that players will enjoy the games powered by Unreal Engine 3.”

Ever since Epic Games first revealed the Unreal Engine 3 for iOS, we've been excited to see what developers might come up with. Uptake, however, has been slow possibly due to licensing fees.

Gameloft's been no slouch from a game engine perspective as is. Gameloft is planning to release four new games with the Unreal Engine 3, two in 2011 and two in 2012.

    Good news, everyone!

Great decision Gameloft! Looking forward to playing those titles. So far I've been really impressed with the way UE3 games look on my 4th Gen iPod Touch. I think I speak for a lot of folks when I say that!

  • Brementer

This is great news can't wait to hear what all of the haters have to say.

  • Russiaone

Hmmm, quite the awesomeness. My guesses as to the games in question: Modern Combat 3, NOVA 3, some RPG (Dungeon Hunter, most likely), and a new IP (well, you know what I mean).

  • SirAwesome

This is good news and in all seriousness shouldn't this give them more time to work on developing and fine tuning the core game mechanics ?

  • DotComCTO

This is great news! Gameloft's engine has been good, but - with all due respect to Gameloft's dev teams - it can't really compare to Unreal Engine 3. Cant' wait to see the games that Gameloft puts out on iOS now...especially with the iPad 2 coming!

  • JCGaga

I wouldn't mind if Unreal engined Gameloft games get a small price boost from the normal $6.99. As long as it's under $14.99, but hopefully Gameloft will keep to the usual price point at less than $10.

    • Man Jorge

I till be $9.99 at the most because that's the limit for games.

      • Mamoon65n

No, the price limit for games are 13$ at the most.

      • Mamoon65n

No, the price limit for games are 13$ at the most.

      • Nigra

No, the price limit for games are 999$ at the most.

  • Ghfhfgh

cool. we'll have much more goodlooking soul-less copies. seems to delight some people, I'm not like that. but hey, everyone have its own tastes.

  • Remmi Zero

A whole new slew of Gameloft knockoffs to come!. Up next: Cogs of Battle?

    • Russiaone

Very funny. And I hope you're right. LOL. (I really laughed out loud) I don't think people should write LOL unless they're truly laughing out loud. But I digress.

I didn't realize that gameloft had over 4,000 employees. That is bananas.

    • EastsideStompers

Actually, technically, there's only one employee, and 3,999 clones of him.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QM5JSQTMFNCGDTQ3OGJM6G4ZM4 Jorge Man

        hahahahahahahhahahahahahahah, i laughed so hard.

      • EastsideStompers

        ; )

I'm really hoping they try and come up with something original with this tech. I know clones have their market despite all the criticism they get, but something new and inventive would get them so much respect from me. I'm sure they could do it if they tried.

Does this mean Gameloft might actually start supporting Game Center? At least, I think Unreal Engine has easy ties into GC. Maybe they'll even be universal. If both of those happen, I might actually have to start considering buying their games.

    [Double post]

  • alexander

theres no disputing they are quality, fun, and well priced knock-offs

  • Evilsearch

finally cant wait to see modern combat 3 using UE3

  • gee

    damnnn!!!! about time 🙂

Gameloft is becoming like Apple...Not only beating the competition, but stomping them into the ground.

    • PyroDecimo

Apple leads the market by producing new -innovative- products. The iPhone wasn't the first touchscreen but wow the whole package was just amazing.

Gameloft just... in the same analogy, produces Windows copies.

    • Randlgames

Wooooot! I can't wait for MC 3 and nova 3! FTW GAMELOFT!!!!! Gangstar also, maybe online?

  • Clyndon

I know, some of you don't like the way Gameloft works. But I have to say, that I really enjoyed Dungeon Hunter 2 and Starfront. As soon as UE3 was live on iOS I wanted to see it in the hands of Gameloft - we'll Gamelofts engine isn't really a burner....

So with UE3 they have controls, graphics, physics in one fancy package and can focus on pure gameplay. So this news is thumbs up for me.

  • Gwet17

I'd delete everything else off my iPod if they made a Unreal Red-Dead clone!!!

  • E_Domina

I just wish i had a newer device. using unreal will be great and all for newer people but not for me

    • Nigra

Yes but this isn't about unreal engine anymore anyways... lately, gameloft is starting to create 3rd gen and up games... like sacred odyssey... as well as other developers, like crescent moon with aralon.

  • Mac

They should have used the Unreal Engine on Rainbow Six. Anyway I hope this gives Gameloft the confidence to make unique and original games. I'm actually looking for a Tower Defense game that would be powered by the Unreal Engine. Since Project Sword has been demoed, I thought to myself that this kind of graphics should be used in TD games. That would be epic. So far, the TD genre has taken a nose-dive in the App Store. This is the time to release a groundbreaking TD game.

    • Gwet17

Dungeon Defenders is an Unreal-powered TD game, but I never bought it due to poor reviews.

    • ExcitedWgamer64

Wooooot! I can't wait for MC 3 and nova 3! FTW GAMELOFT!!!!! Gangstar also, maybe online?

      • ltcommander.data

I doubt Modern Combat 3 will be using UE3. MC3 should have already been in development before UE3 was made available on iOS and Gameloft already uses a sufficiently advanced engine for the PS3 version of Modern Combat that seems like a waste to just be a dead-end. NOVA 3 and 4 in 2011 and 2012 seems likely. The other pair I'm not too sure. I'd like to say Gangstar for the other, but doing a full open world in high enough graphics to warrant using UE3 would be kind of pushing it for an iDevice at least until the 5th generation devices are released. So I'm thinking the other title might be a new franchise released before a UE3 NOVA 3 to test the waters.

Two new games in 2011, in 2012:

Modern Combat 3: Spec Ops, NOVA 3: Combat Revolved - 2011
Modern Combat 4: Earth in Angst, NOVA 4: Reachin' - 2012

Don't get me wrong, I love me some Gameloft games, but we all know they're rippin' them off some developers. I suspect with this arrangement, we won't see any Bulletstorm, Gears of War, or Unreal ripoffs any time soon. At least when they rip off Call of Duty this year, it'll look a lot more like the original.

But how much longer do you think Activision will let Call of Duty remain the fodder of zombies on the iOS market before they finally invade en masse?

    • Russiaone

Too funny! Combat Revolved, Reachin'. LMAO!

  • Decoy Octopus

This is the best news touch arcade reported so far this year. I was getting tired of hearing about 99 cent junk. Once the unreal 3 engine becomes standard, this will finally knock out most indy developers who are making low quality games in the appstore. Hopefully this will raise the average price of a game up so that more AAA titles are developed by big name companies.

If customers keep buying Angry BIrds I wouldn't be surprised to see Gameloft revert their decision within this UE trial. Let's hope that won't be the case.

  • Mamoon65n

The games might be 800 MB or 850 MB in size!!!! They should make a Assassin's Creed 3 prequel for iOS with the Unreal Engine 3. A few days/weeks after the events of Assassin's Creed 2. That will be amazing if gameloft can make it.

  • Nigra

hmmm... I wonder, what does "multi-platform" mean? They will release these games on android too? or does it mean PS3/PC or whatever else?

    • Luukert

I really hope for a ganstar 3 with UE3! That would be asome. They might be able to pull of a san andreas clone you know. 3 cities, forests etc... And the Red Dead clone would be really frickin fantastic!

    • ratonbox

Android, PSN, iOS and Mac.. the normal platforms for Gameloft. Oh, and probably Facebook.

Wow, it's crazy how far things have come in the world of cell phone video games

  • Quang

It's good for GameSucks cus their "latest and most powerful" engine that they used in some of the latest games is SUCKS in every single way!
