As part of today's keynote, Epic Games showed a brief tech demo of the Unreal Engine 3 running on an iPhone. In a surprise twist of events, this very same tech demo just appeared on the App Store mere moments ago as a free universal app. If you've got an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3rd Generation iPod touch, or iPad, feast your eyes on Epic Citadel [Free].

The 82.2MB tech demo includes a medieval town to explore, complete with a bizarre and a "mysterious cathedral". If you've been waiting to see just what the latest-generation iOS lineup of devices is capable of, you really need to check this out. Epic Citadel is a fantastic display of the potential of future gaming on the platform, as it has been developed using the exact same tools and technology that developers are using now to create high-end console games.

Until the iPhone has more than just touchscreen accel/gyroscope for input then maybe Apple can talk. Gameplay is just horrible on mobile phones.

      • http://izfest.com Isaac

Yes, as a touchscreen, accelerometer, and gyroscope are already 3 more input types than the PSP, the options for the iPhone/iTouch are sooooooo limited. (sarcasm)

      • JC Karlo

Why are you even on an iPhone gaming site if you think mobile gaming controls are horrible?

Besides analog controls aren't the only satisfying form of game controls out there...there are plenty of games that utilize the idevices' touch and gyro interface on unique ways that are on a different league of enjoyment, one that the psp or ds can compete with at the moment.

I might add that the gyro is an excellent alternative to analog sticks for fps games

        @JC Karlo
You are out of line. The better my phones gets and the better the games get the more I believe an external controller is in the future for my iPhone. That doesn't mean I shouldn't play some games with the touch controls, it just means accessories should be encouraged and the sooner the better.

Next year when the 2Ghz dual processors and separate GPU units hits our phones then why can't I play PC/Console quality games with analogue controls(via bluetooth) on my iPad or on my iPhone connected to my big screen TV/Monitor?

I would add my voice to the some touch controls are HORRIBLE chorus. Because they are and Tilt is even worse. But they are OK for Angry Birds but they suck when I want to play SF4.

      • Fredrik Olsson

Angry Birds, Flight Control and Doodle Jump would be soooo much better with analog stick on PSP. *NOT*

With diffent controls comes diffent games, turns out many of the diffent games are really awesome games as well.

So it crashes on launch on my touch 3G on 3.1.3. Does it require 4.0?

    • Jenz

Do you have a real third gen or the 8Gb "third gen"?

    • Calpa

It requires an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3rd Generation iPod touch, or iPad..

    • Ben

Not working on my 3G touch either (32gig model, OS3... quits right after loading screen). Power-cycled the device, still not working.

Looks great on the iPad, though.

      • Beric

Yeah, appears to require 4.0, as everyone with 4.0 has no problem on a 3G.

Too bad, as I'm not gonna lose my jailbreak.

Requires iOS 4. It runs smooth as silk on my 3g 32gig iPod Touch.

      • http://stevepye.me Steve Pye

No, it doesn't require iOS4, otherwise it wouldn't run on the iPad. For those having a crashing problem, power off your iPad/iPhone (hold both the home button and the sleep button) then boot it back up (hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears). Worked immediately for me after that.

    • http://www.glenncorpes.com GlennX

It doesn't require IOS4 otherwise it wouldn't run on iPad. It presumably requires OpenGLES2.0 and it seems to need a lot of memory. In fact it's the only app i've had to reset my iPad for.

WOWZERS!! I have this running on my iPad (for those who say it is crashing, just reboot...this is definitely grabbing as much memory as possible). The tech demo is simply stunning. It's pretty close to XBox 360 level graphics. The graphics, lighting and sheer speed on the iPad is stunning. I would *love* to see a game built around this...like Oblivion.

OK Epic...where are the games to go on this engine?!?! :-D

Very, very impressive tech. It's not a million miles away from 360 level. Texture detail is amazing too on an iPhone 4, but a bit less so on an iPad. (half the memory on an iPad).

Look forward to seeing what devs can do with this.

    • Yrogerg212

I don't think memory has anything to do with texture detail. That would be the retina display. Now, the memory may affect how quick you can turn the camera, or how quick the game loads, etc.

      • http://www.mindjuice.net MindJuice

Actually, memory has a direct impact on texture quality. If you don't have the enough memory to load the high quality textures into, you drop down to lower quality textures.

      • Zonko

There is no bigger limitation on texture resolution than memory. An iPad has 256mb, while an iPhone 4 has 512mb. Huge, huge difference.

i thought id download it and see how crappy it is on my gen 2 ipod till i get my gen 4 ipod.. and i get this error:

"this app is incompatible with this ipod touch" "this app requires open GL ES 2.0 graphics compatibility" maybe this is problem for some?
    not having the latest iso?

cant wait to give this a spin soon.
future sure is gonna be good for the ipod i think.

I looked at the UDK license and I have some questions.
    1. If I make a game I can download the UDK for free it seems but when I decide to sell it I have to give Epic 25% of my revenue? Is this right? It seems like a lot.
    2. Will the UDK have a different license model for iPhone development? Maybe a lower percentage of revenue?

Well, Pocket Gamer has reported that Epic is developing some sort of project that goes beyond a tech demo. I struggle to believe that companies will start utilizing this engine to create console quality games only to turn around and sell those games off for 4.99 or less. I'm not sure what this means. I think people are spoiled by now and aren't going to want to go to a premium pricing model in order to justify the existence of what could truly be high-end games.

    • silentcorp

The average user may, but there are plenty of gamers who would be more than willing to pony up more cash for much higher quality games.

I for one am sick of flash browser-based games being sold to me for $.99-1.99 and would be more than willing to purchase a full featured game for $30+ like my PSP/DS.

But you are correct, iDevice gamers are on the whole a bunch of whiners who think $1.99 is too much for a great game!

      • akira01

There is a huge gap between little game for 0,99 and game for 30 dollar.
Reality: the 30 dollars games on the PSP GO don't sell well. In fact, it's a big fail. YOU can pay for such a price, but it will be an epic fail in reality...
GTA China Wars or other consoles quality games under 10 dollars proves that's there are no obligations to reach the 30 or 40 dollar for "big" games.

    • Zonko

I'd happily pay £30 or even £40 for a proper high end game with AAA production values and a 20-40 hour play time.

You get what you pay for, and if people want to pay pennies for games they'll get shovelware which will last them 5 minutes. Someone has to pay for a 50-100 man team to work for 2-3 years, as that's what it takes to get a top tier game made.

    • Jason

I'm sick of stupid 10 buck games that I play on the toilet.. Give me some serious rpg or fps with these gfx and that has an a good campaign, I'll pay 30 easily, possibly more but considering it's all digital that's a hard pill to swallow

Oh my gawd, those graphics... they're unbelievable! WHY HAVEN'T DEVS BEEN USING THE IPHONES FULL POTENTIAL??? This is amazing in all, but doesn't it piss you off to see the potential is being wasted on things like doodle jump? (albeit its a great game, it's no gears of war)

    • Yarn Vials

When consumers are willing to pay premium prices for an iPhone game, your argument might hold some weight. Last time I checked, licensing the Unreal engine clocks in at around a million bucks, more than twice the average iphone game budget. You do the math.

Pretty graphics aren't cheap and game development isn't a charity.

    • http://www.isotope244.com Rasterman

You're kidding right? Two things you may not realize:

      1) This was made with an engine that the best game engine developers in the world have spent the last 5-10 years making full time with millions for a budget. The tech demo was made in 8 weeks by one of the best studios in the world and worked on by several people and probably had a budget of more than most full version iPhone games.

      2) Most consumers would rather buy a 99c doodle game than a 9.99 title of this quality, not me personally, but this is just the way the market is.

      • Jason

And you know most consumers? Why does anyone think that pricier games will fail... They're so many low budget games cause of the platform, not some missing market, that's ludacris

Just downloaded this. It's visually the most incredible thing I have ever seen on my iPhone 4.

I do have worries; it's 80 MB. A full-fledged game would be approaching 1 GB+? I'm not complaining, but if you have a 16 GB phone, this could be troublesome. The frame rate on the iPhone 4 is acceptable. However, if added elements are included and the FPS drops, it might ruin the experience. I would guess they would have to tone it down for a full game.

Got DAYUM this is pretty. Absolutely freaking gorgeous on the Retina display. Frame rates drop to sub-10FPS at highly detailed points with high draw distances, but considering what it's running on this is fantastic. I wish you could explore the area around the stream with all the trees 'n stuff, just for the hell of it.

Also, as gorgeous as this is, it might help to keep in mind that it doesn't factor in having characters walking around to interact with or stuff like that, which may effect overall performance if the characters are detailed (and they'd have to be at least to some extent if they want to fit into this beautiful world.) Can't wait to see what's done with this engine down the road.

sub 10 fps? i went everywhere and got no less than 20. running things in the background?

This just a tech demo,, don't expect any games with the full quality of the demo any time soon. idevices are still a couple gens off being able to run this engine with players/ai/enemies/online added on. obviously a game like myst would be feasible atm.

It definitely looks great, but I too am worried about real world performance. It looks like they are using really detailed textures but that the polygon count isn't much higher than other games, especially since there is little animation and no characters, etc. The tech demo at the keynote had a battle between two knights, but I don't see that here, so it's hard to make an accurate assessment. Regardless, having the unreal engine running on iOS is a monumental achievement and can only mean good things in the future.

Re the pricing of high quality games: don't forget with the app store model there is no distribution costs, higher impulse buying, the ability to update/enhance/repair games for every end user and a massive potential market. A year or two ago I was heavily considering purchasing a PSP. Then I got my iPhone and a gameloft game and figured, "this will do". After today, I don't see any reason to ever consider such a purchase, and I have a feeling more gamers will migrate over to multi-function devices with tech like this. The devs will move to wherever the market is, as already witnessed with companies like id, capcom, and now epic.

On a side note, playing this made me want to through my Wii out the window...

    • Christian Bale

Hahaha I agree for the Wii, it's really embarassing!

size of a full game is a concern. as well as ram usage, not to mention the ability to drain the battery in under an hour. also shadows, easy enough for a static statue, its merely a reflection with diff alhpa. how is the gpu going to cope with moving reflections for a few dozen objects for example. just my initial thoughts

This... is really quite incredible as a tech demo. My worry is actual implementation in a retail product. As any PS3 fan saw in the SquareSoft crystal tools FF7 tech demo for the PS3, the initial promise of the technology and the actual game resulting from it (FF13) can vary drastically. I suspect corners will need to be cut all over the place in order to get frame rate at a playable level for an actual game, and creating a world properly utilizing the engine will likely not be cheap.

Also, Epic has an unfortunate history of tweaking the hell out of their own implementations of their engine, but then having problems all over the place when developers who license the tech try to get the same performance/quality out of the base code provided to them. Don't get me wrong, this is a very cool piece of programming, and I'll be showing it off to people for the "ooh ahh" factor, but I remain cautiously optimistic on the actual game front.

I think that this tech demo is nice... but I don't really think it eclipses the original Xbox yet. The shadows look like they were part of the textures, and while it looked bump mapped it isn't. Its just more texture trickery. And, while it wasn't too bad it kinda lagged a bit.... just saying. I don't think this will ever replace game systems or handhelds. Cause to be honest, we all know Sony is working on some type of new PSP, and it will probably be fairly powerful too. Not trying to belittle it cause it is cool, not trying to be a fanboy, and not trying to be a troll. Just my honest opinion.

    • liquidmutiny

I was blown away by the level of detail and how smooth it ran on my iPhone 4. I had no idea it had this much graphical power. The iPhone 4 is on par with the PS3 and xbox 360. Gaming on wifi or 3G with Game Center will be amazing.

Games are cheaper than the PSP and DS and more accessable than going to the store to by a cartridge or cd. Once more console developers realize they can make more money with the iPod, iPhone, and iOS, it's over for Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.

    • http://www.squarezerostudio.com squarezero

According to the tech notes, those shadows are generated by the lighting system (not pre-baked), and the textures are actually bumped-mapped. Obviously an XBox 360 or a PS3 can generate better graphics, but this demo blows away anything currently available on portables, and, frankly, even the stuff we've seen so far on the 3DS (not counting the 3D thing, of course).

What Sony and Nintendo have, though, is a serious commitment from major developers, and an audience willing to pay top dollars for games. Whether this announcement changes on that front is not known at this point.

The bar has certainly been raised.

The question for me however will be what kinds of prices will they be asking for apps using this tech. I would imagine they're going to be shooting for $15+ for games with this engine...and i'm not sure i'm going to go for that.

Once games go much higher than $10, in my mind they're now competing with Steam and XBLA Arcade/PSN, and my expectations go up much higher. Its not going to be enough to make some IP ripoff with nice graphics.

    • MWHApps

These kind of games are worth $15 on the iPad. Now on the iPhone, more or less. It depends on how much you can do on it. I bet in 2 years at most, we will be able to play Modern Warfare 2 and Halo 3 on the iDevices. Just think about. We are already a little step below Oblivion or maybe its predecessor. How much further are we to getting OBLIVION? XD

I thought it had frame rate problems occasionally. But, for this demo, since not much is happening, frame rate is not a big deal. It will be interesting to see if the frame rate interferes with real game play.

Bump mapping - it looks to me like there is real "paralax mapping" on the iPhone 4, but not on my iPad. But the effect is very subtle - so subtle I'm not sure if I'm just imagining it or not. On my ipad, I don't see it at all.

As far as lighting goes... since none of the lighting moves, there's no well to tell if it is pre-baked or not. (Except, of course, for the reflections on the floor of the chapel, which obviously can't be pre-baked.)

Sorry to spoil the fun but...

It was all baked. They used a shader for the mapping, that's true and it's a GL 2 shader; they didn't invented anything new actually.

Blow the PSP away? are you guys serious? In pair with the XBOX 360? you can't be serious aren't you? please, check your facts before puking those kind of comments.

This thing has no real time shadows. Paralax mapping? why don't you search first what that is before even starting to mention "paralax" mapping. (it's Parallax, and no, it wasn't on the tech demo. Sorry).

I love the iPhone. But there is no way this thing which barely works on the 4G at 10fps and with baked textures is on pair of the PS3 / XBOX and PSP.

The iPhone is just not strong enough. It's years from being strong.

And before you know it, PSP2 will go out with XBOX 360 quality and we will be all sad with a EPIC games pre-baked shadows and effects over textures (COUGH! COUGH! RAGE ANYONE? PRE-BAKED!? DON'T TELL ME YOU FALL ON THAT TOO!?) and crying because Marcus the little black boy laugh his ass at the Epic Citadel baked texture demo.

iPhone isn't even near XBOX or PS3, get real. PSP is a console; iPhone is a phone which tries to be a lot of things at the same time.

I love the device. Love it. Best thing ever. But I play games, so I love all of them, XBOX, PS3, PSP, IPHONE, etc. Love them all.

The chapel reflections are real yes, but that's not the engine, that's the OpenGL 2. Take a look at youtube to the many examples from like six months back.

Yes, we will have the 40 need for speed and Call of Duty "New Sandwich over the Desert Hurricane" games in a year; but it won't change much what you guys saw so far.

We will also have the next 40 Ubisoft "Splinter Cell: Chameleon Island With Cheese" and a "exclusive" Assassin's Creed which will be the Splinter Cell guy with a different texture; but it won't go further than that.

The companies who make their big studio games with the Unreal Engine MAY port their game to the iPhone baking all the textures, cutting down half of the levels (or a 90% of them) and adding a few more stuff like Tweet your score and that would be it.

Don't even dream with Arkham Asylum because it ain't gonna happen. It will be a really low poly version with pre-baked textures to run on every iPhone device.

And that will be it for Citadel pre-baked effects demo and the guys yelling about it being at the same level as the XBOX and PS3.

And AngryBirds 2 will come out and become #1 on the appstore.

Everything will go the same, nothing will change.

There will be some tower defense game with little guys made of sticks which will go right to the top grossing in just a week while the "Need for Speed: desperate reaction over the highway which goes very very fast" will remain on the #5 at $4,99.

They are just having a laugh at all this, believe me.

And if it doesn't turn out like this, I WILL EAT MY HAT.

    There I said it.

Peterson, You're only "spoiling" the demo for yourself with your unwarranted negativity (and probably your life as well). It's an awesome demo and I'm still amazed just walking around in it. If you don't see the potential, it's your problem.

And it's "par" not "pair". As in "this demo is on par with xbox 360 games". You shouldn't be correcting anyone's spelling until you learn spelling and grammar yourself.

I'd also like to see the hat eating!

SO if it all was baked, why it won't run on 3G huh? There are many gamers, who use iPhone, so why dont make a game for them? It may success.

Yes we are, the PSP is by far less powerful than an iPhone 4, you must, really, know that.
You CAN'T do that today on a PSP: low resolution, less powerful. You can't even dream on that.
Marcus can laugh....at him, on his stupidity today....
    Rage...and now, that.
    End of game. Game over.

Troll? that's 1990. Like baking lights.

Time will prove me right. Look it up at google, developers know what I say is true, it's all over the web now. Just get your facts straight before going "This is a PS3 I am holding at my hands" because it's not even close.

Sure, it is an impressive tech demo; with baked lights. Love the baked lights. Looks real neat.

But that's all it is, so don't wait for Assasain's creed or Batman on the iDevices to look EXACTLY or even remotely close as they do on next gen consoles because it ain't gonna happen.

I would love to see that, but it ain't gonna happen.

    Rage? baked.
    Epic Citadel? (my god...) baked.

It's all baked lights, low poly and lots, lots of sparkles. Maybe some shaders, but again, they are already there.

If something else, it only shows what the current iPhone can do, nothing else. It is the same device that we bought yesterday, the engine doesn't "add" anything new to it. Just uses what's there.

It is good, it is excellent device. But it is NOT a XBOX or PS3... get your FACTS together.

And @Akira01; you say something about a hat for me... I am not even going to answer that. Was not insulting anyone, just participating on the discussion.

    • Gregsci

Pal, who cares if it is baked lights or whatever? IT RUN ON THE IDEVICE!!! That's more than enough to show you what can this iBabe do.

Just to be clear: I know it's an amazing demo. As amazing as the iPhone is. There is nothing more there. The engine is just fully using what the iPhone has already.

I just thought that you guys will be a bit more.... into the little details to see that you are not holding a PS3 or an XBOX on your hands but a phone with OpenGL 2.

And that's all. For now. God knows soon we will have more graphic power. But to call the iPhone 4 a competitor of the PS3...

That's what I was saying, and that's all.

I just can't believe you guys fall so easily into it.

I blame microwave food, tap water and air TV programming for that, not you so, chill out. It's natural. I was a kid once and got my pants wet with this kind of announcements too until I learned... not everything that shines is gold.

But go ahead keep the hopes high. That's our youth's work. But again, not a PS3 or XBOX.... please, don't go that far.

    • deadclown

      "that's our youth's work"

I know, I know. It IS the internet, and when in Rome....but just a little tip: it works better if, when you're calling somebody immature, you don't do it in an immature way.

Yeah, it's "bump mapped". But the type they use is commonly regarded as fake. Why? Because like I said it's all texture trickery. They have a texture that marks how high a certain spot is supposed to be in terms of reacting to light on top of the original textures. So it looks bumpy, but it's not. Real bump mapping actually uses bumps. So yeah, it does
Bump mapping, but not real bump mapping. If you don't

If it were true bump mapped, then you would see the stones sticking out a bit more than the mortar. But it's completely flat. Oh and to the other comment, I was referring to the original xbox, not the 360. The original xbox was capable of every single effect seen here. The 360 and ps3 can do true bump mapping.

    • Ty

      Oops double post...

    • MilesO'Toole

Ty - it sounds like you are describing normal mapping. That is something else. This demo looks to be doing parallax (or relief) mapping, and epic's promotional material says that's what they are doing. I consider that to be "real", at least compared to what else is available on any mobile device right now.

Or that: "There will be some tower defense game with little guys made of sticks which will go right to the top grossing in just a week while the "Need for Speed: desperate reaction over the highway which goes very very fast" will remain on the #5 at $4,99."

It's just troll, really, not so 90....just troll today, by Peterson....

The engine looks awesome. I don't give a shit about whether things are normal, bump, or parallax mapped, pre-baked or post-faked. I want to explore that world and enjoy it, not pre-emptively ruin it with ridiculous nerd rage.

Haha I don't care if this is fake graphics they are great and that's all I care about. I don't like how some people are saying it's close to the xbox 360 or ps3. Cause those consoles have amazing chips way bigger and stuff. So I don't compare this to those big boys. But yes I do compare this to a ps2 or xbox. Remember this graphics are coming from a device that fits in your pocket without feeling like your carrying a gun lol I mean the psp is huge and the ds is huge doesn't weigh as much but is huge!!!!! So anyway iPhones iPad iPod touch are awesome and better then the psp and ds and that's final just saying..........

    • Endwaro7

O yes iPad you can't get it in your pocket but you get the idea right? Lol well if you can then I will eat my crapy psp 3000 lol yes I do have one =D

What it comes down to is this tech demo unveils a level of graphic fidelity nobody expected to see for a long while. Thank you Epic! I can hardly wait to spend money on Unreal engine developed games for the iphone. I still remember the impressive dynamic lighting of Unreal...and that feeling came back to me as I was playing this demo. Freaking awesome!
