201094N89EA81Qver2While Hironobu Sakaguchi may not be a name you recognize, the titles of many of the games he played a vital role in have become classics along with forever influencing the landscape of roleplaying games. Since creating Final Fantasy in the late 80's, Sakaguchi has directed, produced, supervised or was behind the original concept of most of the Final Fantasy series as well as several monumental games of the time such as Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Xenogears along with Parasite Eve and its sequel among others.

Following his resignation from Square, Sakaguchi founded Mistwalker and since has released games on both the XBOX 360 and Nintendo DS, most notably Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey. Currently he is working on a mysterious "large scale project" that very little is known about, and per a Happy New Year blog post, Mistwalker is also working on a project for the iPhone.

We don't know anything about this iPhone project yet, and with the secrecy surrounding Mistwalker, it's hard to say when we will. Regardless, you only need to head over to Hironobu Sakaguchi's Wikipedia entry to see the full scope of his influence on the history of video games. Needless to say, anything he has his hands on will be a welcome addition to the App Store.

"While Hironobu Sakaguchi may not be a name you recognize". Really? People don't know Sakaguchi? He's one of the most famous names of all time in the world of video game development.

For anyone who hasn't played Lost Odyssey, it's the best JRPG this gen and one of the best of all time. The storytelling is outstanding, and the combat deep and well done. (and it's proper JRPG turn based combat, it's not a button masher)

Wow he did PE?... One of my all time favorite games!

    • GDSage

No, he didn't 'do' PE. Parasite Eve was a creation of...

      - Tetsuya Nomura (character designer of FFVII, FFVIII, FFX. Director of the KH series)

      - Directed by Takashi Tokito (creator of the ATB battle system for FF's, director of Chrono Trigger, etc)

      - Designed by Yoshihiko Maegawa (designer of FFIII, FFV, and the Mario and Luigi RPG series)

      - Story based upon a novel of the same name

Sakaguchi, like with many of Squares games back then was the producer of PE. He was an important piece to Square back then but like Miyamoto at Nintendo he can be credited too much with games, by fans and reporters.

So, Touch Arcade, we're supposed to know Jeff Minter who made one game of note a quarter of a century (re: Tempest 2000) but we wouldn't know who the creator and helmer of the Final Fantasy series untill Final Fantasy X, not to mention some of the most universally we;; regarded games in existence like Chrono Trigger is?

    Oooook.

BTW, anyone thinking that this will lead to a "big epic JRPG" has not been paying attention to two things:

    1. The iPhone/touch market penetration in Japan. While many Japanese developers recognize the fact that their local market is now the smallest of the three major markets in terms of sales, they still, for some reason unknown to me, concentrate mainly on the JP market alone. And as the market for iPhone isn't what it is in the North American and European markets (same deal with iPod touch, the second "SKU" if you will of the platform) I don't see the type of larger investment for this project that some of you feel is necessary for "epic" JRPGs.

    2. Again, sticking with the JP developer thing, pay attention to how past JP developers have treated the platform: Kojima with MGS Touch, Squeenix as a whole with the more mobile-centric games, etc. Chances are this will be a game that is short and quick burst, and while I and others recognize such games to be more "in tune" with the platform, you others who want "deep, epic, and lengthy" experiences might be disappointed.

What you speak of would make better sense with regards to console development, as many a dev (apart from the few such as Capcom, Konami, etc) focus pretty much just on their own market.

However for much of the rest, the reason why they concentrate on Japan is because it is handheld (well, DS) land, and they are rolling in money from it. With the DS just as large in NA and Europe (with Europe being the DS' largest market), it is just an extra big fat bonus. It is just the Japan market is most receptive for many of Japanese devs wares.

In any case, with regards to Sakaguchi; the guy can't catch a break and it is looking likely he never will. Since going solo, all his titles have pretty much underperformed / bombed. Unfortunately, it looks like it will be near impossible for him to recreate another IP like Final Fantasy again. I suppose it is just one of those things which you only get the one chance on (with regards to establishing a successful, popular IP).

It's a shame, not least because without him the FF series has gone to the dogs (thanks a lot, Kitase / Nomura).
