‘Imp or Oaf’ Released and ‘Galactic Keep’ Status Update

ioo_screenshot_july_04_01Gilded Skull games released their first title for the iPhone last week, Imp or Oaf [App Store]. The gameplay is extremely simple, and targeted towards children. As the title would hint, Imp or Oaf is a guessing game where you must guess if the image you’re looking at is of an imp or an oaf. At the start of each round a image appears that is zoomed in to the point where you can’t make out many details. You can either tap to screen to zoom out before guessing, or just guess immediately.

The less you zoom out, the more points you earn each round. Some images are impossible to discern immediately and either require a lucky guess (which nets bonus points) or potentially several levels of zoom. I’m not sure how much appeal Imp or Oaf will have for adults, but the art style, music, and attention to detail in the user interface is nothing short of mind boggling for a game this simple.

The tutorial even has its own song to sing along with. How many games can you say that about?

Meanwhile, we’re still very excited for Gilded Skull’s upcoming game, Galactic Keep: Dice Battles which we first posted a preview back in July.

Galactic Keep is a game that utilizes gameplay elements from classic pen and paper dice-powered roleplaying games, with the story in game told in the same style as a dungeonmaster would describe a setting in a game of Dungeons & Dragons. Since we last posted about it, they’ve added a critical hit (and failure) system, also implementing a luck system in to a lot of interactions in the game. Character types and attributes are being fleshed out, and while they originally planned to only have 10 playable characters, they’re debating packing as many as possible in to the game to serve as unlockables.

The weapon and key systems are evolving, and Gilded Skull is in the process of doing animation tests to add even more of the same visual flare seen in Imp or Oaf in to Galactic Keep. They’re still not ready to show video, as they want to get all the animation and sounds in place first, which is understandable given the sky high expectations a lot of people have from the phenomenal screenshots that have slowly been released.
