'Fieldrunners' Goes OpenFeint Gold – New Maps Coming Soon

posted by Eli Hodapp on November 6th, 2009 11:44 PM EST in $2.99, Games, Tower Defense, iPhone games, iPod touch games

ofGoldWe ran in to Subatomic Studios back at the Penny Arcade Expo in September, and part of my chat with them included the mention of the new levels in the PSP version of Fieldrunners [App Store] eventually making their way to the App Store. These new maps are coming next month when the game is relaunched as the first member of OpenFeint's gold game program. Fieldrunners: Gold Edition will have an in-game store where these new maps will be sold as downloadable content, as well as being the first game to include OpenFeint 2.4 which will boast a number of new features including an in-game instant messaging service. Note, the "Gold Edition" will be a free update to current owners of Fieldrunners.

Similar to our monthly game ratings, the OpenFeint Gold program aims to pick out games which are not only of the highest quality, but also make excellent use of the OpenFeint service. They seem to be setting the bar fairly high in nominating Fieldrunners as the first game to get their gold rating, and it should be interesting to see what games they choose in the future.

Here are two screenshots of the upcoming levels, Frostbite and Skyway:

Each will feature new towers, new enemy units, and will require new strategies.

Fieldrunners was among the first of the highly successful tower defense games for the iPhone, and it's always nice to see original App Store classics like this still getting attention from their developers.

hope existing customers get an update to their game so that they can buy it (i'm not expecting any generous freebies) from within the game for less than repurchasing the whole game a second time. and more importantly, wasting another icon spot.

game relaunched? This better not mean I have to re-purchase it. I am fine paying a buck or 2 for extra maps and such, but not another game/icon spot

^ I guess neither of you bothered to read the article, since it clearly states:

"Note, the "Gold Edition" will be a free update to current owners of Fieldrunners."

"it's always nice to see original App Store classics like this still getting attention from their developers." – huh? So the 'original App Store classic' is still getting attention from its developer? Because it sounds an awful lot the the 'original App Store classic' is being REPLACED by a newer version with a couple of extra features, in an effort to further pad someone's bank account. Is that about right?

Nevermind, I guess I should've refreshed this tab before finally posting … so it looks like we'll get the Gold Edition with the option to purchase the newer levels. Gotta love DLC.

I know it's selfish but I wish they use Plus+, since I'm a member. I don't feel like signing up for OpenFeint, too.

But hell, if OpenFeint eventually dominates the game social networking scene, not like I'll have a choice.

    • Adams Immersive says:

Signing up is free. I’m signed up for at least 3 different game networks and I don’t see any reason to mind much. Cost in money is zero, cost in time is about two minutes total for all of them :) So why not?

Fieldrunners is great, but these dev's at Subatomic Studio's are complete sell-outs!

  • Adam says:

AWESOME! I've been waiting ages for a Fieldrunners update!

  • Dreamora says:

Great to see it finally happening.
Was mentioned already at the PSP launch that these map would happen as in app purchase on the iPhone, now we know when and Fieldrunners on top has the chance to be an OpenFeint Gold. Thats great :)
