'Doom Classic' Submitted to App Store

posted by Eli Hodapp on October 24th, 2009 5:43 PM EDT in First Person Shooter, Games, Upcoming Games, iPhone games, iPod touch games

doom-logoWe just got word from John Carmack himself that Doom Classic was recently submitted to Apple for approval.

According to our previous interview with Carmack, Doom Classic will stay faithful to the original with OpenGL rendered graphics along with slightly better sound quality and a "brand new finely crafted control system".

Recently he posted in our forums asking for opinions on how our forum members preferred controlling first person shooters on the platform, so it should be interesting to see how much of this feedback gets implemented in to the actual game.

We will have more information on Doom Classic and its impending release next week.

    Thank. God.

  • ShortAppsReview says:

Automatic buy for me! Can't wait.

  • Grunt says:

It's doom. Time to kick some ass.

  • Slapshot says:

We need Hodapp's Preview video powers.

  • 5duc29 says:

Can't wait for it. I wonder how much it will cost, since Wolfenstein came out at $4.99. But I think Doom classic has more to offer though which I think will probably cost more.

Is there any news on Doom Resurrection? Other stuff being added or anything?

  • Rotlex says:

It's about time! Must say though, I am REALLY looking forward to this. Price? No idea, but I'll buy it day one no matter what, LOL.

    • blurgh says:

was the "LOL" at the end really necessary…? Did they change it so instead of a full stop you now type LOL at the end of every statement? Like "Hey Sally I'm just going to the hospital to pick up my terminally ill father LOL"?

  • Slapshot says:

Just reminding you guys that this will have FULL ONLINE WI-FI MULTIPLAYER.

  • Wonder if this gets into German App Store either… Wolfenstein did not, Duke Nukem did not… and of course I think Doom Classic will neither. *sigh*

  • Chris says:

FINALLY! I've been waiting for this for 2 months! And is it really true that it will have FULL worldwide multiplayer? If it does thi will be F***ING AWESOME!!!

  • Johnny says:

    ABOUT GOD **** ***** ******** TIME!!!!

    • wegmans says:

I wish I knew what the **** you said

      • Brady Gudgel says:

I read about Carmack bringing the old classic to the iPhone on the id Software website. That was months ago. I thought the project got abandoned. I checked DoomWorld today, and guess what? I'm on this website typing this comment. Woo!

  • GHRocker08 says:

I hope it was submitted on like Monday or Tuesday so we could get it possibly within the net 3-4 days, or sooner if Apples nice :)

  • Josh says:

I am so excited for this game it's stupid.

I hope Apple approves this quickly.

  • Septimus says:

Hope to see it in the next 3 weeks then. When a Duke Nukem game beats you to release, you know you are late.

    • Scott says:

Yeah, but look at how awful the controls for Duke were/are. I'm glad Carmack took his time to, hopefully, get this right.

      • Septimus says:

To be fair, and I would put anything id do above most developers, he hasn't had to deal with true 3D on the iPhone/Pod yet.

Really, after doing Wolf3D so well, Doom shouldn't have been an issue control wise.

    • TKO says:

Agreed. The controls for Duke were utter crap. I'm still pissed the developer hasn't done anything about it. The digital controls are stupidly placed and unusable, and the analogue controls aren't even analogue.

If I ever meet the developer of that I'm gonna punch him in the face for taking my money for that piece of crap and never fixing it.

I have faith that Doom will be a whole lot better. I still have Wolf on the phone, coz it's a darned fine FPS, with excellent controls. Can't wait to have Doom installed beside it.

  • Bob says:

    About F'n time!

    Yahoo!

  • Tzke says:

Fantastic! I can't wait. I'm sure some old timers might be miffed at the OpenGL gfx. This old timer welcomes it. Hopefully we'll see the other Doom episodes to follow. That would be perfect. Doom RPG? Orcs and Elves? Quake series? Bring it all. Id is top notch.

  • blackHorse says:

It's time to get some new games hey it's 2009 not 1989.

  • dumas1000 says:

Doom Classic would've been a good idea a year ago, but iPhone/AppStore development has advanced beyond this. this game really only appeals in my mind to Nostalgi snobs, at this point, for which I am not. My first system was an Atari 2600, but I have no real desire to play these relics of the past.

If, if it has true online, 3g enabled, I might reconsider, but that's something that I will believe only if I see it. After all of Gameloft's thusfar hallow promises, I need to see the online. I'm sick of devs vaguely promising online but often times not delivering. This goes beyond Gameloft, although Gameloft is a serial offender when it comes to hallow online promises.

  • jason says:

    niiiiiiiiice

  • Johnny says:

    briiing it ooon!

  • Dark NRG says:

God almighty. WHY??? Why waste time developing this??? I've played it all back in the day. I love nostalia as anyoone else. But DOOM?! pray, is it on rails? Why not make Quake at freakin least?!?! This is was dumb, move forward, not backward. Where's Nova and Eliminate? Everyone knows I'm not for ncomo, but even Eliminate will be something "forward". Guess it's the lowest hanging fruit for id to do and take our money…

    • arn says:

      quake is coming

    • Scott says:

Then don't buy it. Want something original? do it yourself. It's called giving people what they want. It's also called-more cynically-a sure money maker. I can't begrudge Id for making money on Doom if they're still able. Any smart business would do the same thing.

And if you don't want more of the same, don't see sequels, remakes etc at the movies, nor buy remakes, updates, etc for games. These things get made 'cause they money. Once the demand decreases, they won't be doing it anymore.

      • arn says:

these also get made because it is MUCH cheaper to port Doom than to create original IP. Carmack said if the App Store can't sustain higher prices ($9.99) or so, then no one will be able to invest making sizable original iPhone games.

So, that just leaves us with casual games + ports of existing IP.

        arn

      • Dark NRG says:

Well, as always, Arn makes some sense of things here. However, I'd still like to take issue with "remakes and sequels", both of which are "moving forward", as I'm promulgating here.

  • dumas1000 says:

By the way, any game that contains true online will likely take forever to gain approval. Just look at Sniper Vs Sniper, Quantum Collapse (real online version), Outer Empires (still in limbo, I suppose), iMech, etc. Eliminate is already at 2 weeks and counting. I don't know what the approval time was for Real Soccer 2010, but the majority of true online games take at least a month, minimum, and quite often longer than that. If you really want to play this game, pray that a real online mode was excluded from the final build.

And by hallow, I mean many devs promise online and then they don't deliver. Hallow promises = empty promises.

    • GHRocker08 says:

I hope Apple proves you wrong with that statement. I don't mean that in a rude way, I just want DOOM already. I've been waiting since June! I'm hoping the usual approval time (1 week or less, I think)

    • Scott says:

Then you mean hollow, not hallow. Hallow is to worship something, or give respect to. Is it really so hard to look in a dictionary?

  • mrcc says:

ooooo i cant wait. i hope u can add the old codes for invincibility, walking throw walls. ect. if they have that and multiplayer. im sold but im still questioning it.

  • Bulk Slash says:

Hooray! I've been checking the App Store for this on a nearly daily basis. Wolf3D is one of the best controlling games on the iPhone and I've completed it twice now. This will be an insta-buy the second it turns up.

That's really cool John Carmack was asking for feedback on the controls, although I don't think it was necessary because Wolf3D controlled perfectly. Unlike Duke3D which still controls like ass even after a patch.

    • TKO says:

Yeah, but since Wolf there has been a bit of an evolution in controls (on the iPhone, I mean.) It used to all be dual-stick, but not the trend seems to be left-hand analogue stick for movement, and swipe to turn/aim. IMHO that makes the whole experience even better.

  • jwm2 says:

Some of you just don't get it. John Carmack is the grand father of all FPS games, without his genius this genre would cease to exist. I've been a huge fan of his since the days of apogee. In a wet dream he'd release commander keen, secret agent, the side scroller duke nukems and countless other games they were known for. Just knowing hes here gives me a warm fuzzy feeling all over, lol jk ;) Anyhow i'm buying wolf3d now, i had no idea it was even out. I remember playing it when you could download software from bulletin boards (way before the internet was around). The memories this brings back are priceless!

    • Dark NRG says:

Oh I get it alright! All hail Carmack. You know Stoneloops was pulled, so why not all FPS'? Hell, lets just play PONG, but with wifi multiplayer, right?? I think Carmack should be thankin Nolan Brushnell if anything…

  • mikeadams says:

this is free on the google android g1 marketplace when i had a g1. worked flawlessly. im sure theyll squeeze 5.99 out of your pockets for it though.

isnt doom old enough to be shareware now?

    • TKO says:

Yeah, you should suggets to apple that they provide a model for that. Sure, I have it for 'free' on all my other devices (GP2x included for portable gaming), but I'll still buy this on the iPhone. On top of that I'll be happy I have a phone with a decent apps ecosystem with me. I wouldn't try to claim any advantage with something as limited as a G1.

  • John says:

I look forward to this alot. I have never finished all of the original Doom but I know this one I will. Wolf3d was a big surprise to me to play on this. The game was so good. Controls excellent. For me ID games will be the most played on iPod touch when they release them all.

  • nuff64 says:

This announcement couldn't have been timed better. No joke. Ever since the game was announced, I've been checking the app store every day. Sometimes even twice an hour. Obsessive? Maybe just a little. It's a game that I have fond memories of, and I know John Carmack is going to put a ton of love into it like his Wolfenstein 3D port. Beautifully done.

As of right now, I'm laying in bed, eve of my birthday and experiencing the worst flu of my life. I felt near death so bad at one point that I called my father to hear from him what almost felt like it could have been the last time. I've NEVER experienced anything this brutal.

I sweat it out after Thera-Flu and rest, with help from my girlfriend constantly bringing me water, and..

The Doom announcement I've been waiting for. What seems so little and petty to one, may just mean the best of news for another. God I'm such a dork, but getting through this crap to be able to see my family, my roommates, and play Doom multiplayer online at work with my crew.

I'm sorry I put you guys through that. Could've been a post on my blog easily, but hey, it IS post related!

  • DJ Cubs says:

Am I the only one who hates W3D's controls? I find it really hard to play even with the addition of the side-step :(

Really hope Quake 1 and Dark Forces come to iPhone (as long as they have decent control schemes) :D and Syndicate come to think of it…

  • jason says:

buy a US itunes card, and skip the censorship

  • EatKodosDaily says:

@arn (awhile back commenting on John saying over $9.99 can't be sustained)

Does it honestly cost six figures to make some great new IP though? I feel that right now with my limited experience in programming, I could learn enough to make a great new IP and push it out onto the app store without spending a single cent more than I already have for my iMac, iPhone (okay, fine, I have to keep paying this monthly bill, but I'd end up paying for it whether I was developing or not,) and the $99 I already paid a few months back to develop. Even if I had to go out and buy all this, it shouldn't cost me more than $5,000 at worst.)

The huge drain on money seems to be advertising… and maybe a lot of employees. I don't include my cost of living in that $5,000 above. Still, spend your budget wisely and you shouldn't have to leave 4-5 figures.

  • benj says:

    Best news ever! :P

For the record, I actually thought the duke 3d updated controls actually worked quite well. This will be better though

  • rodneyjacobs says:

Doom Ressurection is still the best game I've ever played on my Iphone. The only other game that comes close in console quality is Real Racing.

  • Droppin' Loads says:

    I'm psyched!
I don't understand the trolls on here putting Doom down. If you don't like it or think it's too "old school.", then don't comment! You're only proving yourself the obnoxious @$$holes that you really are.

    • differenz says:

Well not really. That's exactly why comments are here for, so people can express their opinions on the subject.

anyway.. For me, this game has one positive element and that is the wi-fi multiplayer. Honestly, I've been disappointed by Duke Nukem iPhone conversion so I hope this one does well with controls and multiplayer.

  • CJH says:

I'm buying this on day one and gifting at least 2 more. This is gonna be awesome.

  • sufy says:

Don't really comment unless it's something BIG. This is something BIG! Can't wait. Roll on Doom Classic!

  • ImNoSuperMan says:

    Fan-Doom-Tastic :D

Lets hope it gets through the mysterious lands of the dangerous App Approval desert. Quite a few get lost in there and couldnt come out for the life of them.

  • RomaTotti10 says:

    Awesome.

I will also be buying this classic.

Hope it's not going to be too expensive.

Now we just need Duke Nukem 3d and Quake to come out as well.

  • McCool says:

All you anti doom people will secretly be buying this and playing all day. Support id Software they are developing huge technology for the iphone their new engine will be x10 better than unreal engine for with iphone capabilities. If you hate doom so much then go home and burn all your halo games because they stole the doom player model making it so id could no use if for doom3 without looking like thieves.

  • spiffyone says:

    Wolfenstein Classic? Great.

    Wolfenstein RPG? Ditto.

    DOOM Classic? Great.

    DOOM Resurrection? Also great.

The upcoming DOOM RPG? If it's like Orcs & Elves and Wolfenstein RPG, great.

id is giving us the best of both worlds: Classics AND all new offerings (albeit based on those classic IPs).

That said, what would REALLY make me happy would be if the Commander Keen games made it over and, perhaps (dare I hope) an all new, made-for-iPhone/touch Commander Keen game. I know it's pie in the sky stuff, but, hey…dare to dream. :)

  • jason says:

so when is apple going to approve this

  • acidbottle says:

im not really too excited by this news :(

i love retro n wot not, but its just doom. id get mildly excitable if quake 3 hit the iphone tho ;)

  • Dom says:

John carmack just submitted doom and I JIZZED in my pants

  • Droppin' Loads says:

    Damn.
I feel like a little kid waiting for Christmas on this one.
It can't be approved fast enough for me.

  • Alex says:

Hopefully controls won't suck like first iphone doom… that was a waste of money!

  • Chris says:

I'm hoping he takes advantage of the new store policy. Doom Episode One, Free because it is shareware, then add on packs of the rest of Doom and Doom II. I would also love to see a wolf 3d update with the Spear of Destiny maps. This would allow all the skeptics a chance get hooked for free. They did do a lite version of wolf 3d.

  • Dejota says:

Carmack is going to ve very rich again…

  • I think this will be a fantastic addition to the app store. Being such a fan of the Doom series (especially the third instalment), I can barely play them without screaming like a molested cat but the enjoyment factor is incredible. The best entertainment for a late night party with a few mates after a few drinks.
