So, Ghosts 'n Goblins it is.

Exactly which historic name Capcom would finally adopt for the iPhone version of their upcoming sidescroller has finally been revealed. IGN has scored some of the first screenshots for the iPhone version of Ghosts 'n Goblins.

We had first heard of the port back in September at the Tokyo Game Show 2009. Capcom a then unnamed game that used 3D models in a 2D side scrolling game. In that respect, it shares many characteristics with the PSP's Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins which was also rendered in 3D.

The iPhone version of the game appears to use a 4-direction virtual pad along with 2 on screen buttons.

This game was so hard back in the day. I remember the frustration, and I don't want to experience that again. My Tac 2 got pretty beat up from me throwing it at the wall.

Characters look tiny, and this 3D look doesn't look so hot. The less said about the onscreen joypad/buttons the better. My cynical side says these big companies are just cashing in.

    I won't be buying it.

    • http://www.twitchfactor.com Twitchfactor

"Cashing in" would be to simply run an emulator and give you the old game (ala Sega's ports). Doing 3D actually shows some sort of commitment.

It seems a new chapter of saga good!

Bad...Yep, I think these 3d models are a bit cheap. I hope these screens come out from a beta. If not I prefer 2d.
I'm not a retro fundamentalist but sometimes 2d is better than 3d, expecially for portable consolle.

Hope those sprite will look better on the final version...Maybe resolution doesn't help too...Who knows.

    • temiman

Undoubtedly it's version for SNES looks much better than this. Just look it yourself.

Im gonna reserve judgement till this actually comes out, the original Ghost 'n' Goblins is one of my all time favourite games (indeed it still gets regular plays through MAME on my PC) The 3d models dont look brilliant but then again they have been enlarged for the purpose of screenshots, I have a feeling when it's running on the Iphone screen they will look great.

Am I also the only one thats noticed a 3rd button? (for your armour power up) obviously this only appears when the meter is fully charged at the top of the screen.

I know loads of you hate on screen joypads and buttons but seriously, how else did you expect this to be handled? I for one will probably buy this regardless of reviews as im such a die hard fan of nearly every itteration of this franchise, heres hoping it's released soon!

I've played nearly every game in this series, and I might buy this because of the 3d graphics. If it was exactly like the originals i probably wouldn't bother.

since the original way over the top difficult im not fussed they have remade this, hopefully it will improve an overrated game! the main sprite and virtual buttons look a bit nasty but all else doesnt look too bad.

price of this could be crucial, if its more than 4.99 then its off ma list for good!

I think I must agree with the "looks bad" camp. It looks like it was a port of an N64 and PS1 game mashed together... The environments have lowish resolution nearest neighbor textures, and the characters have extra low resolution, linearly filtered ones. How hard is it to be consistent people?

Capcom should hire gameloft to make their games since they know how to push the idevices. This looks like crap and gameloft could have at least made a decent model for Aurther and Lancelot. I really do hope that is pictures from a beta version of the game and they will clean up the characters once all game mechanics have been fixed.

  • Elsic1975a

I completely agree with the statements about the 3D style. Everyone seems to think they have to make everything in 3D for it to sell, but they lose their core audience- the retro gamers who grew up on GnG- as a result. If it were done in 2D, they could have gorgeous backgrounds and art. Instead, it's hideous. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night proved long ago that 2D is still a gorgeous art form for games. If only other designers would realize the same thing and make it as art, not...this.

    Or for the love of....

What the F is up with the goddamn "retro only" whiners on this site? You're honestly as bad as the ones that are "anti-retro".

There's no problem with releasing BOTH the OLD and NEW games on this platform or any other. So Capcom didn't just port over the arcade version. Okay. They've given us an all new adventure, not really a port per se. Think Resident Evil on Gamecube vs. the original PSone version: all new character models, new areas to explore, enemies, power ups etc. Add to that the fact that even if they went and just ported the older game it wouldn't have necessarily meant a great end user experience. After all, let's not forget the atrocious friggin' "port" of Sonic the Hedgehog for this platform. Oh, well, some of you will because you erroneously think even bad ports of retro games to be better than new stuff. >_>

In fact, y'know what... it's much like the PSP's Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins which, if you people look at screenshots of on IGN (or play in person) will see this iPhone/touch game is not that far removed from.

Would I have preferred 2D? Sure. I would've preferred vector 2D graphics (think flash style, but more elaborately drawn than anything we've seen so far) rather than sprites actually. I would've preferred the same "all new update to the original" format, ala REmake and Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins, but with vector art. That said, Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins is one of the BEST games on PSP or any portable game system, uses 3D in much the same way as this game, and if Ghouls 'n Ghosts for iPhone/touch comes anywhere close to that it will be an f'n stellar game.

Hopefully most of you won't complain if it is that great a game. But I know some of you are "retro only" zealots, the type that actually hailed those craptastic Sega ROM dumps as "good" even though they ran on a completely unoptimized emulator will still complain. Because you're zealots, and can't see the good in anything other than your position.

Sad… So quick to judge. Forming opinions with little information says more about yourself then what your trying to play down.

This used to be my favorite game especially the first one back in the 80's. Looking forward to the *gameplay* video and a review. As long as they put in a really good effort, I'll be getting this one.

Until now there are only those screens to judge and damn, they look really awful! Why did they have to move this to 3d? This will be very sad if they don't change the graphics dramatically until the release, which I really doubt.

I, like a number of others agree that I have my reservations about the 3D version - but I will reserve judgement until it comes out. 2D scrolling platformers are still a great genre - and it's a shame there are not more of them on the iPhone. Hopefully we [Manomio] can rectify that in the coming months :)

GnG was also one of my all-time favourites - so I hope for an original version.

    Cheers,

It baffles me that developers can't come up with better control schemes than onscreen D-Pads.

I need to learn how to program iPhone games so I can implement a decent control scheme in a game.

    • Gabe Logan

And what would you come up with other than some gimmicky "tilt to awkwardly move, swipe to awkwardly attack, with an overall lack of precision that has no place in a platformer"?

      • Marc

If developers code real hard, a physical gamepad will manifest itself under the iphone. Unfortunately it's real hard to do and we haven't gotten a game to implement this yet... but I'm holding out hope that we will still see one for the holidays this year.

      • spiffyone

        Personally:

Split the screen into two "hotspots".

Left hand side for movement controlled via "swipe and hold" ala Bobby Carrot.

Right hand side for jump controlled via upward swipe (which are relative to whatever angle you set your swipe), and "shoot" controlled via tap.

Simple, elegant, and does away with ugly virtual onscreen controls. If some don't "get" this control method it is not due to inefficiencies of the platform or the control method I've laid out, but rather their over familiarity with using dpads and buttons and wanting to replicate that so as to avoid any sort of learning curve (which is silly, at best, as even virtual dpads and buttons have a bit of learning curve associated with them compared to physical controls).
