IMG_0001I admit when we first got approached by EA about Rock Band I was skeptical. After all, Tapulous has been through three revisions of Tap Tap Revolution, the latest of which we reviewed recently and includes an immense in-game store to buy new music to play along with a bunch of other features. However, where Rock Band pulls ahead of the pack of rhythm games on the iPhone is when it comes to overall immersion while you're playing the songs.

Obviously there's only so much immersion that you can achieve when you're pretending to play a guitar by tapping on the screen of your iPhone, but playing the tracks in the iPhone Rock Band works just like its console big brother in that every note you miss causes the music to be interrupted. This seems to add so much more to the game than just tapping along to a song like other similar games on the platform with music that just keeps playing regardless of how poorly you're doing.

Each song can be played in four distinctly different ways-- Guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. Every instrument has its own track that you tap along with, and they all match up with the music just as well as the other versions of the game. Each mode is also playable in three difficulty levels. Easy should be easy enough for anyone to jump in to, and hard seems fairly challenging.

IMG_0009 IMG_0011

Rock Band features several modes of play. If you only have time to play a single song, there's a quick play mode. If you want to play through various gigs as your band seeks fame and fortune there's a world tour mode, and if you have friends with the game both online and local bluetooth multiplayer is included. I don't have anyone to test these multiplayer features with, but they're all in there, and I can imagine some pretty hilarious impromptu bluetooth jam sessions among groups of friends that have the game.

The online component uses Facebook to log in and connect you with your friends, and according to EA you will even get push notifications when friends of yours invite you to rock out online. Included in the initial release are 20 songs from a ton of great bands, and there is an in-game store where you can buy additional tracks. In the build I have, there is one additional content pack which features two Smashing Pumpkins songs for 99¢.

Included track list:

30 Seconds To Mars - "Attack"
AFI - "Girls Not Grey"
All American Rejects - "Move Along"
Beastie Boys - "Sabotage"
Blink-182 - "All The Small Things"
Blondie - "Hanging on the Telephone"
Foo Fighters - "Learn To Fly"
Foo Fighters - "Everlong"
George Thorogood & the Destroyers - "Bad to The Bone"
Jethro Tull - "Hymn 43"
Joan Jett - "Hymn 43"
Lynard Skynyrd - "Simple Man"
Motorhead - "Ace of Spades '08"
Pixies - "Debaser"
Presidents of The United States of America - "Ladybug"
Rise Against - "Give It All"
Silversun Pickups - "Lazy Eye"
Smashing Pumpkins - "Cherub Rock"
Steve Miller Band - "Take The Money and Run"
The Go Go's - "We Got The Beat"

I went into Rock Band for the iPhone skeptical that EA could provide something that hadn't already been done before by the existing rhythm game competition and came out fairly impressed. Rock Band has already been submitted for approval to Apple, and is expected to go live sometime next week!

With those tracks it's a no-go for me. Because I can imagine the pricepoint will be rather high.

I hate those small indicators, Rock Band is so fu**ing inaccurate. Rock Band Unplugged (PSP) was one of the worst music games i´ve ever seen...
Doesnt look like they improved their game mechanics :/

    • Martin

I tend to think you must just suck at Rock Band and are therefore unjustifiably bitter.

How would BIGGER indicators make it more accurate? It's music dude, you either hit the note at the right time or you didn't.

    • Zachary

He must like Guitar Hero 3, where you can hit the note a full second before it actually hits the indicator. stupid guitar hero.

Why no singing? Is there a technical limitation I don't know about? I wonder if the pitch calculation is somewhat processor intensive. Hmm... Any other apps out there with this?

Maybe they just don't want a lot of people singing out loud with headphones on in public. ;)

The problem with Rock Band is that they pump out games on new system with the same recyled tracks. If you're a Rock Band fan, you're sick of these tracks.

    • FallenAngel

If you're a real fan of the franchise you don't care about playing the same awesome tracks over and over again. What might piss me off is that I have to pay for DLC I already own on the Xbox again...

this may baffle you but the iPhone/iPod user base blows away the market for "adults playing with plastic guitar toys on the weekend"...

starting to see the market for this yet?

Oh yeah, look at them pump out those games. First a PSP game, now an iPhone one! And who cares if the tracks are on Rock Band, there are nearly 1000 tracks on Rock Band console version, so chances are they will be "recycled".

Okay, this is freaking awesome! My gripe with Tap Tap is that the music doesn't cut out when you miss a note, so there's no motivation for me to hit the notes to the beat. I will definitely be downloading this when it's available. I'd like to have an actual singing component too though.

Would have been SO much cooler if it were actually singing. The only thing I can think of is that to make sure the pitch is being matched, perhaps it requires a lot better hardware for that. Sucks though. I would have loved to see it.

This should be interesting even without actual singing. I'm not sure about the restrictions on it, but there are chromatic tuners available for the iPhone (I have one on y phone already!) so it should be able to handle actual pitch recognition. The issue may be how much processor power it would use up in addition to the graphics rendering and music playback...

Maybe it will be available on the tablet! Yeah!

This looks great but a cheaper version of this is all ready out from gameloft-guitar rock tour 2 The games work pretty much exactly the same and grt2 had great mechanics and an awesome set list if you like classic rock, but I'm guessing rock band will be even better because of more updates, instruments, and the DLC

Yeah, but maybe Rock Band will actually have DLC implemented and not be a big scam like GR2.

Also it looked INCREDIBLY easy didn't it. I wish this looked harder and Beatrider were a bit easier. Thankfully Beatrider just updated their app to allow for 3 notes verses 5.

Also, if you are into this genre why not look into Beatrider? You supply your own music so you'll love the set list. ;)

Guys, the game is awesome for these reasons:
    Pros:
    1) The graphics are great
    2) Looks like console version
    3) I like the setlist, but remember, they said INCLUDE, which means there will be more songs for u people who don't like the songs mentioned

    Cons:
    1) Same band animation
    2) There might not be actual singing involved in vocal mode, but i dont care cause im not gonna sit in my bedroom or classroom singing to my phone!

def dissapointed they didnt do actual singing, i know they can do it, and why have no games implemented accessories yet, why not make an accessory plug in for rock band where you actually hold down the tabs and strum the phone to play, games need to start expanding their ideas, with accessories iphone games could go to another level.

Well, even if you can't sing, what was even more disappointing, that it didn't even show the lyrics, so that you could sing along without rating (okay, something i wouldn't do on the bus^^).

    Honestly,
    you people enjoy Tap Tap?

Having only ever played two music games, Guitar Hero 3 on the Wii, and Tap Tap 2.6 on the iPhone, I have to say, Tap Tap sucks ass.

It's hard way too difficult to find songs given how Tap Tap organizes them (difficulty? Really? What the hell? How about, IDK, genres? Or something else people actually chose songs based on.)

And then the way you don't actually feel like you're playing the song at all because you don't actually have to move for the song to play (you get a bad score, big deal.)

I'm curious to see how much better Rockband does. But the biggest things I fear:

1.) It's EA. They've set themselves up as the worst big name video game company ever. They're like Microsoft. They rip off every great game out there, slap a huge price tag on it, and advertise like there's no tomorrow. They're in it wholly for the money and really don't give a crap about how good or lasting the game comes out, as long as people are impressed enough to buy.
2.) I don't see any great songs. A few of them are okay, but really, let's see some hair metal. Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Helloween... IDK, maybe Avenged Sevenfold and Slipknot? Eh, Slipknot has easy enough riffs I can play on the real guitar...

This game has no option for singing because there is no microphone on the iPod Touch. There isn't even a third-party setup that is readily available - just a few that look like they were scratch-built in someone's garage.

It will be interesting to compare against TTR even though TTR is more of a DDR style game than a musician-lite game like RB or GH.

It will be interesting to compare against TTR even though TTR is more of a DDR style game than a musician-lite game like RB or GH.
