Pixel Mine Games has released the Chapter 2 update for their action RPG Underworlds [$2.99]. Chapter 2 adds more than 2.5x the content that was in the launch version of Underworlds. Features include:

  • Visit a new city
  • Level cap raised to 50
  • Repeatable dungeons
  • Thousands of new items
  • New quests and creatures
  • Revamped Interface
  • Quest Log
  • Mini-Map
  • World Wide Agon Rankings with Facebook and Twitter support.

One area of major improvement in the game is an interface overhaul which improves the screen layout and character controls. While we very much enjoyed the first version of Underworlds, the new features seem to address any complaints we had.

This video walks through the many interface changes in Underworlds:

The Chapter 2 is a free update to existing Underworlds customers, and the full game is available for $2.99.

One of the few games I actually finished - it was good in first version but with update it looks even better. Updating and playing again? Hell, why not! It's a play worthy slasher :)

I wonder how this update will compare to the dungeon game gameloft is resubmitting

The Revamped Interface is awesome. I really like it. Its an awesome experience.

But i look forward to Dungeon Hunter from Gameloft.

As someone who bought Dungeon Hunter before it was yanked down, I can answer a bit.

The d-pad controls in Dungeon Hunter nailed the interface. No question. The new Underworld d-pad is better than it was, but it still isn't quite as good. I first played through Underworld months ago, and I had to use the touch controls. I plan to give the new d-pad a chance, but I may end up going back to those again.

I finally got to the Forge today, the level that is crashing, so I'll be playing Underworlds for a while until Gameloft patches their game.

Both games are excellent but I think right now I'd give the edge to Dungeon Hunter. I'll be more certain of that once I play through Underworlds again, which I definitely plan to do; I've been really looking forward to the new content.

Virtual d-pad controls are really difficult to get right. Gameloft is the only company that seems to have gotten the special sauce right, for some reason. At least in my opinion.

Fantastic, I have been waiting for a minimap and quest log. I have a terrible sense of direction and ended up getting lost quite a bit the first time through.

this WAS a fun game, but as soon as i played dungeon hunter it made underworlds seem very "clunky" i'll give it a try with the update. dungeon hunter is by far the best RPG on the app store, and I've tried them all.

  • Ahiru

guess until dungeon hunter comes back on appstore, this is it...

but the controls still suck (analog is useless if the char moves in 8 directions), i liked the old d-pad better...

i played underworlds when it was launched for the first time. i finished it in 2 hours and 30 minutes. will this update bring more hours of gameplay? how many?

way more than double the content size.

I still think way too many devs (and gamers, apparently) fall back on the virtual dpad controls when they aren't really necessary. I know quite a few didn't dig the "tap to move" controls, as they were clunky in the first version of this game (Chronicles of Inotia did it better, IMHO), but even so...why go with a screen hogging virtual dpad button? Why not go with a "swipe to move" control interface ala Bobby Carrot, Mouse House or several other games? Would that not work just as well, if not better, and look more...elegant?

  • CJ

Controls still need improvement but otherwise good update.

  • Aldonn

Yeah I don't get the virtual D-pad. Diablo plays through click to move, click to attack. I would think that kind of gameplay would translate really well on the Iphone, but no one's done it yet.

I'd like to see a port of the original DIablo on the Iphone. I'd buy it for sure, day 1. Possibly the only game I can say that about. Get on it Blizzard.

Kudos to pixelmine for this update! I like this game even better now ... i also have dungeon hunter, but this is a very good game as well, so people who like these type of games ... underworld is def. worth the money...

  • Adams Immersive

I thought tap-to-move worked fine even before this update. Don't let the D-pad turn you off... turn IT off :)

  • Noah

I've been waiting to start playing this game... purchased it a long time ago, but now I'm ready to dig into both Chapters 1 and 2! Esp. since Dungeon Hunter is on the backburner.

    • Noah

      Still waiting moderation, huh?

It seems to be a very nice update to a game I bought for only 99c. The controls don't bother me much. What does bother me a bit is the sound effects - there doesn't seem to be a sound effect when you hit something. Like metal clangs or whatever. And some enemies die with no sound effect. So it ends up being a strangely silent game with not enough audio feedback.

I think that problem is easily fixed, so hopefully they consider it for an update. But of course you can't update a .99c game forever so maybe Underworlds 2 is the next project for them...
