Vir2L Studios Publishing Games on iPhone

Vir2L Base Jumper screenEarly last month Vir2L Studios released Vir2L Base Jumper [App Store] for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Vir2L Base Jumper, as the title might suggest, is a base jumping game that challenges the player to stay on course. Vir2L Base Jumper recently dropped in price to $0.99 (down from $1.99) and a free, lite version [App Store] was just released that features but one suit, one helmet, and one parachute with gameplay in the City high-rise setting, only.

Vir2L has also published a Frogger-like game Scram Sam [App Store] and most recently rhythm game Vir2L Drums [App Store].

It's worth noting that Vir2L Studios are owned by ZeniMax Media Inc., a Rockville, Maryland-based developer, marketer, and publisher that also owns Bethesda Softworks, developer of The Elder Scrolls series of RPGs and, more recently, the highly popular console hit Fallout 3.  Vir2L Studios already publishes a number of Elder Scrolls games for mobile phones.

And while Vir2L Base Jumper is a rather basic iPhone title, we are most interested to see what future plans the studio has for Apple's mobile platform. A Bethesda producer had previously announced that one of their next projects is an iPhone game.

Thank god for demo versions. This game plain out sucks. The controls are absolutely horrid.

  • Mindfield says:

All the fail at half the price. Also, I'm not sure why it's worth noting that Vir2L Studios is Bethesda's cousin. That's like trying to impart some attractiveness on the ugly fat chick by saying she has a hot blond friend.

  • nic says:

Man, agreed. Not only do the controls suck but the graphics and polish are just lame as well. boo.

  • BlazingLizard says:

And once again iSkyDive!, which has been lauded as a superior title in every way, gets ignored by the Touch Arcade folks. Unbelievable.

I know I'm biased but still its very unfortunate that Touch Arcade are so heavily biased.

I loved iSkydive and this game sucked… sometimes TA changes the article when there is a huge lashback like this. I'll read something like, "[Game] is a very good time killer with fantastic graphics and great gameplay. We completely recommend [game]." And then when everybody mentions how bad [game] is, you'll see the article change to, "We were excited when [game] was released, but in the end it has mediocre graphics leaves much to be desired."

But to be fair, iSkydive needs some more gameplay elements like rings, powerups, etc to make it as you call, "a superior title in every way."

TouchArcade is legit to me. They seem to cover everyone's game. But I WOULD be biased if a developer was trashing me on my own site. Just saying.

  • Ahiru says:

freefall'n is great, but i'm yet to try iskydive…

this one looks bland and awful thanks to some reviews…

and @BlazingLizard, if money (ahem sponsors and such) were at stake, i would be heavily biased as well, so i don't blame TA…

  • Mindfield says:

I'd blame 'em. Bias destroys credibility. A lack of credibility means worthless reviews because you can never be sure if praise for a game comes from the heart or the wallet.

Ain't no way I'd take a sponsor unless they'd be okay with me trashing their product if it's bad. Surprisingly, I know quite a few who'd be okay with that, Og love 'em.

    fyi, Vir2L isn't a sponsor

  • TD_Fan says:

Whoa, this game is so bad it's not worth even free. I thought it would be similar to Glyder (one of my favs) but other than the gliding part there's nothing else in common. Graphics are passable but the control scheme is just terrible.

    • SteelDragon says:

Why's everyone having a cow? I played the FREE demo and it was OK. I haven't played some of the other games yet, so maybe that will change, but everyone on here is way too serious.

  • Thorero says:

Well, I gave the lite a shot, and it truly is woeful. The graphics aren't too good, the controls are messy, And this gets all the hype because it's made by a sister company of Bethesda? What about the indie developers who make great games like Freefall'n? It's got great controls, great graphics, and great gameplay.
