mass effect 1Last week we reported that news of an upcoming iPhone installment of Mass Effect had surfaced.  We pointed to a Joystiq story indicating that one of their readers had taken a survey containing questions concerning an upcoming iPhone version of the popular console action role-playing series.

It turns out that BioWare was preparing to announce the title, but one of the testers in a focus testing group broke the NDA and word got out earlier than planned.  In an effort to dispell rumors and clarify the somewhat vague information surrounding the game, BioWare's Chris Priestly, forum Community Coordinator, posted a few details in the company's forums.

1 - Yes, this is not a hoax or fake story. BioWare is making a game for the iPhone and iPod Touch based in the Mass Effect universe.

2 - We were going to announce this, but one of the testers at a focus testing group broke the NDA (non-disclosure agreement) and things were revealed before we had the chance.

3 - The game is going to be available for the iPhone AND the iPod Touch.

4 - The story of the game is not a "bridging" story between Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2. It is a cool little side-story about one of the upcoming Mass Effect 2 characters. It is not "required reading" to enjoy the core trilogy, but if a fun optional "extra" game.

5 - The development on this game is being done by a separate, dedicated team with no connection to any Mass Effect DLC development or patches so this is not "the reason there hasn’t been new DLC or patches".

6 - BioWare and the Mass Effect team want to branch out in a number of ways with the ME universe, and this is just one example of such branching out. We think the iPhone and iPod Touch are exciting new platforms for games, and this game was designed for these platforms from the ground up.

7 - More information about the this game is coming later this month. None of the info that was leaked is ‘official’ by any means – it was research. We'll have much more information in the future.

Priestly indicates that much more information on this upcoming iPhone title will be coming soon.  We'll bring further details on this as they surface.

I took fun little survey on this, and now that official info has broken I'll just add that the screenshots aren't even from the game or they are prototype screens only. What I saw was exactly what was suggested in the statement: research. They wanted to know what worked best for marketing, etc.

I never played Mass Effect, but I like that this is exclusive to the iPhone and seems to be more in-depth than the average themed game. Seems to be made specifically for the device, so I'm interested.

Also, during the survey, I was asked how much playing I do on each console/platform and I had to admit that the iPod Touch suddenly got the lion's share of my playing (thanks to Uniwar.) That and virtual console games on the Wii (Going through all the Zelda games again)

The kid that leaked the info must feel like a little b1tch right now!

I'll have to see what Mass Effect is, starting here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_Effect

You cannot trust anyone these days. It's very easy to leak information now and not get caught. There are a lot of these leaks happening already, and more will come. Just don't act surprised Bioware.

"3 - The game is going to be available for the iPhone AND the iPod Touch."

Why is a clarification on this even needed?

Are people STILL that ignorant to the fact that the platform as a whole contains both devices? Two devices, one platform. And devs know better (at least the larger ones do) than to release their games onto just one family of devices and ignore the others.

    Anyway...good to know it's a "made for iTouch/Phone" original.

What is this " iTouch "?

I bet Apple sues 'em for picking a name so close to their own iPod Touch.

I mean, the thing's gotta be a total ripoff of it, right?

      ;-)

^Since some games/applications do not work on all ipod/iphone models, I don't see a problem with that clarification

    • sticktron

That's the point of it being ONE PLATFORM: it means that all programs are intended to run on all devices using that platform. That is the default behaviour.

The only time clarification is needed, is if a device-specific feature is required, such as GPS.

    • sticktron

Forgot to mention: a program/game that does NOT run on all devices on the platform is in error--most likely published using incorrect settings (unless it requires device-specific hardware, like GPS)

    • spiffyone

There are VERY few games that don't work across both lines on devices, and that's because the vast majority of developers aren't stupid enough to split their own potential market. I've come across less than a handful of games that were "iPhone only" and that have stayed that way (most of the devs who release "iPhone only" at first change it later, realizing their mistake). And NONE of the larger devs have EVER released an "iPhone only" game. If they did the number crunchers in their company would beat them to death ;)

"It is a cool little side-story"

...not sure how officially "little" it is, as yet.
