Last week Cowboy Rodeo released an iPhone version of Digital Illusions' classic 1992 Amiga pinball game Pinball Dreams [link] through the App Store.  We took a close look at the game and found it to be a superb conversion of an excellent pinball simulator and likely the best pinball experience to be found on the iPhone.  Our readers have voiced extremely positive opinions of the game in both our review comments and our forums.

When Pinball Dreams was released the developer indicated that if sales were solid, both of Digital Illusions' sequels, Pinball Fantasies and Pinball Illusions, would be ported to the iPhone as well.

Tap To Play recently got word from Cowboy Rodeo that an iPhone coversion of Pinball Fantasies is already in the works and is set to arrive sometime in the Spring.  We contacted the developer and confirmed that indeed the game's release is certain.

Pinball Fantasies generally received even higher marks from critics than Pinball Dreams when it was originally released for the Amiga.

Stones 'N Bones from Amiga version

Pinball Fantasies features four tables, each with one or more high scoring rounds that are started by achieving certain targets.  Each table is vertically taller and generally more complex than those in Pinball Dreams.  Level details as described by the game's Wikipedia entry:

  • Party Land - a table oriented around an amusement park, where the letters of either PARTY or CRAZY must be lit to start a high-scoring event. This is the easiest table due to several high scoring targets such as the Arcade and the Loop Ramp. This is the table included in the shareware release
  • Speed Devils - focused on car racing, and the player must overtake cars to take the lead. This is more difficult due to much fewer high-scoring targets
  • Billion Dollar Gameshow - a gameshow-style table where the player attempts to win prizes by achieving certain combinations of ramps. This is the most difficult, as if the player loses the ball before winning the jackpot the prizes are lost
  • Stones 'N Bones - based on a haunted house, where the player must go through different modes of play (by hitting targets spelling out "Stone" and "Bone"), with the later modes scoring more points. This is generally considered the highest-scoring table. It is similar in theme to Nightmare in Pinball Dreams.

See a gameplay video of the Amiga AGA Party Land level.  (Note that the iPhone has a much "taller" screen than the Amiga, and will require less vertical scrolling to track the ball.)

Stay tuned for a full review of this retro classic when it hits the App Store.

This is an excellent game (on the Amiga). After writing the Pinball Dreams review, I was inspired to spend some time behind Pinball Fantasies on my Amiga 2000 and under WinUAE under Windows 7. Great fun.

Anyone who loved Pinball Dreams will like this equally or better. Can't wait.

(The screenshot mid-article was pieced together from the game running under WinUEA on my P4.)

Great news. We kinda knew it was coming from the way that cowboy rodeo hinted in the other thread. Pinball Dreams runs good but there is room for improvement. Hopefully Pinball Fantasies will run even smoother.

This'll be an instant purchase. Now, if someone will port Epic Pinball, I'll be in Pinball Heaven.

I see your Epic Pinball and raise you Silverball. I still have the Fantasy table's music on my iPod.

I am very veeerrrryyyy happy to know that I will own Pinball Fantasies soon ... it will be an instant purchase for me too, as well as Pinball Illusions I hope !

One remark : they will release the second title of the trilogy, but what about issue(s) on Pinball Dreams ? On the forum I reported a ball freeze when locking ball on Nightmare table, but will we receive a fix for this ?

Epic Pinball was great. I think Digital Illusion's Amiga titles were superior, though. It's Pinball Illusions (3rd title) that has the best physics tho. It seems we'll see that in time, as well.

I believe PB Illusions (if it makes it to iPhone) had only 3 tables. I'll probably get PB Fantasies first, and then only get the other two if I get bored enough :)

Illusions!!! WOW! I know every single sound. Spend countless night on the horror table. And all the other nights I coudn't sleep, because my brother played the Billion Dollar table...very loud. This was really a huge part of my childhood. I love that game. And while waiting I go on playing the fantastic Dreams port.

The three pinball games - and they're the ONLY three computer pinball games that ever mattered - just got progressively better for each version. I don't remember how many tables Illusions had, but it definitely kept me interested the longest. Not that the countless hours on the other two were insignificant...

Illusions had either 3 or 4 tables depending on if you had the Amiga or PC version. Although it's said the 4th table was made for the Amiga version too but was left out 'cause it wasn't so good.

having never played these amiga games before... are you guys basically saying...

the first game in the series (which is available for purchase now) is great? the next in the series is even better? and that the 3rd game is better still?

not to be a jerk, but i have to ask the obvisous... why am i not just waiting for the 3rd release. i'm hearing comments about buying the 1st installment so the guy will make the better games. huh? just make the best ones now, or dont. but i'm not into the bribing of buying this so i'll make that. that's kind of weird. i mean i'd just as soon buy the one with the best physics and whatnot, right?

just for the record i grew up playing pinball and am a huge fan. i've watched the zen pinball videos but haven't been able to bring myself to spend $5 per table. so i can certainly appreciate 4 tables for that price. aside from some of you getting super nostolgic, can these be objectively compared?

zen 1,2 (they look pretty hot, dont they? (despite the high cost))
    vs
    dreams 1,2,3

is dreams 3 the one to hold out for? is williams gonna get into the game at some point? if a pack including black knight and terminator and theatre of magic came out, i'd be all over that type of thing!

    thanks,

    marc

Well, you get four tables in Pinball Dreams and Pinball Fantasies. So you have to take a look which tables you like more. Pinball Fantasies is a bit mor colorful and the tables are higher, but more interesting is the tables layout. I only play Ignition on Pinball Dreams and Party Land on Pinball Fantasies, so for me the answer is easy: I have to get both games.

And for this price, I don't have to think much. It's too cheap!

If you are unsure which game you like, Google a bit and download the DOS versions of the games and try it for yourself.

Yes. And If you enjoy a solid pinball game, I would not recommend that just because Fantasies is on the way (and surely Illusions further down the road) you avoid Dreams. They're all superb.

Awesome. I knew it had to come, but awesome all the same. ..my only question is whether they will have both the AGA (256 colour) and ECS (32 colour) graphics as classic options? And options for the ECS or CD-Edition title-music? Do those and I'll buy any pinball game you guys care to throw at me for the rest of my life. My appreciation will be that high. :)

I mean, the AGA graphics were good and all, but it seemed a bit like they were using some of the extra colours just because they were there. The more uniform colour of the high-parts of the tables on the ECS version IMHO looked better.

To marc: You have to get them all. I mean, heck, they're crazy-cheap. All three of the Digitall Illusions pinball games (Dreams, Fantasies, Illusions) were brilliant in their own way. I don't even know how to compare them. There are tables in each set you're almost bound to fall in love with if you love pinball. IMHO each of these is 10 times better than the Zen pinball tables.

Pinball Illusions had three tables (Law 'n Justice, Babe Watch, and XTreme Sports) on the Amiga and PC floppy-disk versions. There was a fourth table, The Vikings, on the PC CD release. It's rumoured it wasn't included originally because it wasn't quite up to quality. I have yet to play it, so I'm not sure if this is true. The other three tables were just totally amazing though and IMHO Illusions is, overall, at least as good as Dreams and Fantasies were.

Now I must hold out hope that Cowboy Rodeo can somehow obtain the rights to port Slam Tilt by Liquid Designs. That was the only Amiga pinball game to ever rival these ones. It truly rocked.
