Upcoming Monster Smasher 'iDracula' from Chillingo

posted by Blake Patterson on February 10th, 2009 10:43 AM EST in $0.99, Fighting, Upcoming Games, iPhone games, iPod touch games

Chillingo has really been cranking them out lately.  The publisher recently made a post in our forums (more pics there) pointing to their upcoming isometric hack-'n'-slash game iDracula, from the developer of Orions: Legend of WizardsiDracula invites players to lay down some monster smack–Van Helsing style.

It's a point, shoot and run affair — stop to bag the goodies, guns and power-ups but watch out for the werewolves and other bad guys.

While further details right now are scant, the game will be priced at $0.99 and is set to debut sometime in the next week.  We're anxious to spend some time with this excellent looking title.  Stay tuned for a closer look.

WOW! BEST GAME EVER?! I THINK SO!

  • Rocketman919 says:

just to reinforce, chillingo is the publisher, not the dev.

  • dsMediaLabs says:

    WOW, that looks insane !!!!!!

  • beekeo says:

$0.99? that price is ridiculously low. the graphics look like a lot of time went into them, as long as there's more than one or two levels I would be happy to spend $5 – 10 for this game.

  • Vende says:

    So long dollar o six!

  • $0.99 seems way, way too low for that game. $4.99 or more sounds much more reasonable.

  • Mathieu Bonin says:

Yesterday I was talking about how the iPhone/iPod Touch needed a "diablo-like" hack 'n slash game… and this looks like it could be it. Even better, given the original take on the theme.

The low price actually scares me though, how can a developer hope to release such a quality looking (well, from the screenshot) product and hope to recoup their investment? Guess we'll have to see.

  • Vende says:

Why are you guys complaining about the price? Lots of relatively high quality games – Days of Thunder, Slotz Racer, AlienMangle come to mind – began with a temporary 99 cents promotion before a price increase. I think all games should start low and then move higher, since that would reward early buyers and benefit the seller whose product would now have more downloads and popularity than otherwise.

  • JC says:

Orions is a well designed game. Kudos to Chillingo for publishing that one for the iPhone. As far as this title goes I hope there are various types of enemies and maps/location backdrops (other than the two shown above) which would really add to replayability.

The graphics look, and at 99 cents, it looks like a must-have for those interested in this genre. Also, from what I know, they are considering a change to the app's name, which I think would be a good idea. i-dracula doesn't do this app any justice.

  • Vende says:

    i-agree

  • acreek says:

Looks cool. Too bad the name is so horrible.

  • Chillingo seems to be unstopable at the moment.
One release after the other. They want to be publisher nr. 1 :)
But this game could be something for me! Looks great!

  • Anders says:

"the game will be priced at $0.99"

Pricing a proper polished title at $0.99 is a very very bad decision. All you will get is bad reviews. Why you may ask. Since I'm lazy I just direct you to this blog post: http://majicjungle.com/blog/?p=66

  • casual touch gamer says:

99c for graphics like that? Is there a catch?

  • Big Albie says:

@Anders: I couldn't agree with you more on the $0.99 model because in general, I don't think the devs get the credit they deserve. Frankly, it gets annoying to see people asking for promo codes or stating an app isn't worth more than $0.99. Obviously for consumers, it's a great deal, but does it make it right? Definitely not. However, I do think it's a wise strategy to use the "limited time only" approach when launching a new game because you reward the early adopters rather than penalizing them. By special pricing, I don't mean $0.99 either; I mean set a fair price. Don't get me wrong, some of the devs who early on decided to go the $0.99 route created the dynamics of today's iTunes store which is unfortunate.

  • spiffyone says:

    @ Vende

The reason people question it is because we wish it to succeed long term. As Anders helpfully pointed out (and as I have in other forum discussions) pricing at $0.99 is a strategy that really only works in the short term and is often counter productive. There is not much room for maneuverability.

And I still think "iDracula" is a silly name. Shadow of Dracula is a much better title ; )

  • rich_952000 says:

    @vende
I agree. When a good title releases at $.99 and give it a few days, or a week , the game is bound to hit the top 100. Then they are guaranteed sales and can drop the intro price. Seems the über-successful Freeverse pricing model is catching on. Nice job Chillingo. Can't wait, hope it's called anything besides "iDracula" though.

  • Lunchbox says:

alot of you are saying the price is ridiculous that low but if its that ridiculous think about how much they're gna sell to make up for that?

  • turbo87 says:

Remember guys, they used the same pricing strategy for the Orions App. They introduced it at $1.99 (damn I missed that price) and then bumped it up to $4.99.

  • Ahiru says:

    finally a true-diablo-clone!!

  • ryoi says:

    now i am a happy man =D

  • SWEEEET!! Looks awesome!

  • Ahiru: The game would seem to have rather less depth than Diablo, but it is an impressive looking slasher.

  • Matejay says:

Graphics looks fantastic, theme is tempting, pricing awesome… just the name, the name!

  • iAwesome! says:

iDracula? Duuuude! I soo need to get this game, if only for teh awesomeness of the name! Oh, please, please don't change the name of this app… It's so tongue-in-cheek and completely out there, I love it!

  • along123 says:

I already cleared an icon space for iDracula on my iPhone!

Oooooomg (picturing homer simpson)OMG! omg! cAN'T WaiT!!

  • Dave says:

    Too low?

You are kidding right? The reason why a dev would price an app at $ .99? Because Apple has sold 10M iPhones (and counting) and who knows how many touches. If you make the price irresistible, you can just about guarantee a 500K to 1M dls quickly which translates into big bucks!

$4.99 while reasonable for a good app will make it much less available to the average iphone user. $.99 makes it a no brainer. Look at Rolando. Critical acclaim, priced to high. Now they have missed the wave of enthusiasm. Dropped price in half. Guarantee they would be way ahead if they had come out at the current price monetarily.

  • Dave says:

    ack…where's the edit key! :)

    monetarily = initially.

  • Ahiru says:

    @Blake

well, i thought that Hero Of Sparta was my Diablo-fix, but man that game has barely anything to do with Diablo – this one DOES have the "hack-n-slash" feel – at least from pictures – it doesn't matter if it does not have a fully-randomized-world with tons of subquests, but if it's more of a hack-n-slash than HoS might ever be, i'm fine with that!

i loved Orions as well, have my hopes high on Chillingo games (don't disappoint us o_O)

  • Sinemy says:

I think its funny how the game's dev team seem to be the only people leaving comments. Try harder guys…its a little obvious.

  • Magichat 9 says:

Did anybody actually buy this game ? I am interested but nobody has commented on the CONTENT of the game. Don't focus on the name. Can someone post their quick review/opinion. Basically, is the game fun enough to play for more then 2 or 3 days ?

  • Vende says:

I bought the game, have played it for maybe 2 or 3 hours in total since yesterday, and am enjoying it considerably. If you want an indepth discussion of its content, just take a look at the idracula game discussion forum.
