‘Aqua Hoops’ Brings Back Memories

posted October 5th, 2008 1:58 AM EDT by arn in $0.99, Retro, iPhone games, iPod touch games

After seeing the strong response to LED Football, it’s clear that there are a lot of long-time gamers out there.

In a recent retro game discussion in our forums, I remembed another old physical-toy turned iPhone-game called Aqua Hoops [App Store].

This game revives the old water tank toys in which you mashed buttons to propel the balls to their baskets. The game is rather simple and is likely to only appeal to those who played the original. Features include:

  • Real underwater feel
  • Tilt sensitive physics
  • Simulated air bubbles
  • Multiple gameplay modes: Free play, One minute drill, Three minute drill
  • There are no sound effects, unfortunately. This gameplay video shows it in action (music not included):

I had a water game like this where you were launching little rings that had to land on pegs. Imagine THAT frustration!

Am I really that old? I can remember playing this kind of game :D

    4. Crastic Says:

Dude! This makes me smile. :D

    5. Oliver Says:

OMG. I even remember the game with the rings. Loved those :D.

Game is fun… however… after you play it like 3-4 times it gets old/boring and there is nothing else to do…. its too simple, boring and repetitive and will get old in less than a week

I remember having a lot of fun with these types of games when I was a kid, so it’s fun for nostalgic reasons. And 99 cents is not a bad price, as the game is polished, and the water effect is cool. Maybe the developer could add a timer so that the user can try to get the best score within a period of time. The developer could also add one or two more game options, as there used to be many different versions of these games. But I still enjoy playing this and alternating with other apps.

In response to Chebuder: yah i have to agree.. this game is a waste of time and only costs .99c beacuase its only fun the first couple times…. i pretty much am sick of it and unlikely to touch it for the next month.

I thing that it is worth it. I love it and i have played with it for a while now. I am in NO way tired of it and it always is one of the first apps i will open when im bored and i pull out my iPhone to entertain myself during class.

Really impressed with this, excellent production value. Just gets everything right.

Now how about a package of a bunch of classic water games? I remember one that had you trying to get the colored beads into different half-circle targets…

What was everyone’s high score on the one minute drill.
I played it like 10 times in a row and managed to get 204

Kurtis Blow would have had a fit if that music was included.

    14. Bigbrother-esrb Says:

Oh lawdy the updates out….no one can beat my online scorez…I’m clee918

    15. Oliver Says:

The update is out and added sound effects. But they did not include the “pfffffffft”-sound of the original games, but a bubbles sound :(.
