Originally a PS Vita Exclusive, ‘SaGa Scarlet Grace’ Has Finally Hit the App Store and Google Play in Japan

TouchArcade Rating:

SaGa Scarlet Grace launched on the PS Vita in Japan and did decently well on that platform. A localisation was looking more and more unlikely given the state of the PS Vita worldwide and Square Enix finally announced ports to basically every relevant platform in Japan that was capable of running this game last year. If you’re new to the SaGa franchise, we’ve covered Romancing SaGa 2 ($17.99) which is worth checking out. SaGa Scarlet Grace was the first original console entry in the franchise since 2002 and it was penned by Akitoshi Kawazu. It has finally hit mobile devices and other platforms in Japan. Watch the trailer for the port showcasing some gameplay below:

The iOS and Android version features a higher resolution than the PS Vita version in addition to various improvements and optimisations to the gameplay and the interface. The current release on both platforms costs 3800 Yen in Japan which is slightly under $35. I’d love to see if this price point makes it over because even when new games that cost $40 or $60 on other platforms make their way to mobile, some people are unhappy and continue complaining. These people then wonder why developers are going free to play on mobile.

I had earlier speculated that it would be localised for sure by the time it launches because Square Enix announced a Steam version for Japan. This Steam version also went live alongside the iOS and Android versions in Japan and I was wrong. Square Enix released a game on Steam and region locked it to Japan. This is quite an interesting move considering the state of PC gaming in Japan versus handhelds. There are plans in motion already for a localisation so expect to see it hit consoles and PC in addition to mobile when it does get localised for release outside Japan. If you’re planning on buying it on the App Store or Google Play in Japan, you will need iOS 8.0 or later and Android 4.3 or later. The screenshots on the App Store show off a very lazy conversion when it comes to the iPad with a widescreen game and filler art on the top and bottom and with the lazy filler art to fill up the left and right sides on the wider iPhone X screen. SaGa Scarlet Grace is available now on the App Store and Google Play in Japan. Check out the official Japanese website for it here. If you do buy it, post impressions in our forum thread for the game here.
