SEGA: iPhone is as Powerful as the Dreamcast

In a recent interview with Kotaku, SEGA of America president Simon Jeffery indicated that the iPhone is as powerful as the the SEGA Dreamcast console, the publisher’s last foray into the home console market.

Jeffery: Why people play those crappy games on their mobile phones, I’ll never understand. I’ll never understand it personally… The iPhone changes that completely. You’re playing Dreamcast quality games on this tiny little device that you just had.

Kotaku: That’s a funny thing that you said that. I heard someone say something about comparing the iPhone’s processing power to the Dreamcast.

Jeffery: Yea, it’s right there.

Kotaku: It’s…so they match?

Jeffery: Yea, it’s pretty impressive.

The Dreamcast was the first sixth generation video game console, but was doomed by the looming shadow of Sony’s forthcoming Playstation 2.  As anyone who owns a Dreamcast can attest (myself included) it is an amazing console and really, for the first time ever, brought current generation arcade quality video games to the living room.  It was an extremely capable system and its game catalog is every bit as playable today as it was back in 1999.

As we pointed out earlier, the PowerVR MBX chipset is a fourth generation evolution of PowerVR’s second generation graphics processor found in the Dreamcast.  While Jeffery called it “a match," we might go even further and point to the iPhone and iPod touch as having more processor power than the Dreamcast ever had.  While the Dreamcast’s central processor was a 200MHz Hitachi SH4 RISC CPU, the iPhone sports a 412MHz ARM1176JZ(F)-S that’s capable of running at 620MHz.

In the interview, Jeffery indicated that SEGA currently has “quite a few" titles in development for the iPhone and concealed no excitement and optimism for the iPhone as a mobile games platform.

A popular racing series, but unfortunately completely shit with cheating AI and typical chav-boy racer shitness. Thanks EA, there is a new device on the market that encourages innovation and you release yet another dire NFS installment (and it will be dire, or it's not NFS and EA isn't EA).

  2. BeyondtheTech

+1 for Maggie Q being in the game. ;)

  3. ryan

  14. Its over

Well, it this is all true, then that's it for me and EA, forever. They are liars and capitalist scumbags. They can keep their games. I will never buy an EA game ever again. I swear to you. NFS iphone was supposed to be a gift for someone for xmas. Now xmas is over, I spent my money elsewhere. After the series of lies from EA in regards to the games release, I figured that it would be best to just forget about it. EA is the New SEGA. Lies, hype and more BS. I call for gamers to boycott these people. Why do we have to put up with all of this? Dont buy their games.

Well, I've waited about three months now, and still no NFS Undercover. WTF! I do have patience, but not this much. I need this game or I'll, I'll, well I have no idea yet, but oh, wait. We can sue for false advertising. But, I'm not that kind of person. Anyone who reads this can unwillingly take my idea.

  20. mrschell

One word march, EA said that there waitng till march to release need for speed for iphone so that they can make other games. i know this from news at ign.com.

  21. Meh

yeah!! It's march and it should be out soon. It's obvious that it's coming out before 2012, because NFS Undercover would be 3 years old!!! There would be a new NFS out. Duh.

  22. rrrfffddd

i am so eager to get this game
but its 12th march 2009 and the is still not out there please
i hope the concerned authorities will help all of us
    thank you

  23. ajax

i have been waiting for this game for too long. i gave ea until today to come out with it. they said sometime in march so i thought march 15th would be enough time. im still going to get the game, im just a little pissed that they waited so long. and those people out there who say ea is terrible and they wont buy the game are a-holes. there still gonna get the game and it will still be awsome. if anyone knows anything about the release date please leave a reply. :)

  24. UberPubert69

Honestly, WTF? I heard about this coming out in September of last year! Its now well beyond my patience and March is almost over. IF the do end up releasing this game for the iPhone, it better be the best F*$%in' game for the iphone EVER!

  25. SkippyThorson

You know, this is a bit ridiculous. There is NO WAY the game is still so buggy they can't release it... They're called updates.

If I recall correctly, they said early March. Well. Mid-March has passed. What is going on? Release it already. Stop playing faux promise games. It's pissing a whole lot of people off royally.

    1. dean

      agreed

  26. schplurg

You actually would rather have a buggy (assuming it even is buggy) game than a good game? The Appstore is FLOODED with half completed games! F that

  27. mehdi

ik wil nu die codes van need voor speed andercover

  28. rrrfffddd

need for speed undercover is still not out
    i am getting pissed off
it was to be released in 2008
    now is nearly april 2009
    EA u suck till now

    1. Capone

EA showed the line up for the iPhone some days ago. Impressive!
I still would recommend that you concentrate on companies that are dedicated to the iPhone, like Secret Exit, Freeverse or ngmoco:).
Because it seems that big companies like Namco, Konami or EA still need some time to get the hang of the iPhone's capabilities.
And no one of us wants some cheap adaptions or ports.

  29. nfsgamer

If EA was going to release it so late they should have introduced it in January or February so that thousands of people aren't hyped up for something that isn't out when they expectted it to be. Now we are all pissed the **** off!!! Get the game out soon or not at all so we don't waste our time waiting for a game that isn't coming out!!!

  30. SkippyThorson

I want, nay, DEMAND, a lengthy explanation as to what the hell is going down at EA, that has prevented them from putting this out. My assumption concludes to 1 of 2 things.

    1) They are waiting for that $20 Premium App section, so that NFS can be the first (or one of the first) hyped up Apps to debut there. Reality check, EA - that's basically the only hype the game could possibly have left.

    2) They are waiting for the 3.0 software to use the Peer to Peer connectivity, and more importantly, the In-App Purchasing - which I believe is a horrid milking concept altogether.

Either way, count on EA trying to get every dollar they can out of this game, because they likely have realized what a rancid flop it is going to become.

    1. dean

craig posted screenshots in feb i think it was. they totally redesigned the game. the graphics have a big boost. also it looks like it's not auto acceleration any more. judging on the screenshots. anyway, they looked real and i guess ea is just busy polishing it this way. i hate how their not communicating though.

  31. NeedforGame

right..the last release date that EA set was in march right??? Let me see...its april now..

  32. ryan

wtf this is ridiculous... it's April 5th. shouldve been out for nearly 6 months now

  33. EAIS

    Lol, EA is Shit....
Electronic Arts Should Be Energetic Farts

  34. Maulwurff

NFS Undercover is the Duke of the iDevice ;))
