It's become sort of a tradition that we check out Celsius Game Studio's upcoming space trader Drifter at GDC. That's a polite way of saying this game has been in the works for a really long time, but to be fair it's an absolutely massive game and is entirely the work of one programmer, one artist, and one composer. Drifter has been out on Steam Early Access for about 2 years and the feedback from players has been great, and Celsius just continues to plug away at the game in the hopes of finishing it off soon. Here's how Drifter is looking at this point in time.

While it's easy to tease about how long Drifter is taking, that fact is something that Celsius takes very seriously. Calling the game ambitious is an understatement, and while there's certainly people who aren't happy with how long the game has been in development there's a large portion of fans who simply want the game to be the best it can be and don't mind continuing to wait for it until it's truly ready. The good news is that the light is at the end of the tunnel and version 1.0 of Drifter should be out before the end of 2016, and I'm definitely excited for it.

Awesome. I backed this Kickstarter and god a beautiful signed poster, but haven't touched the Steam release because I really want it on mobile. There's a good interview with the developer on a recent Space Game Junkie podcast if you want to learn more from the guy himself.

It's cool that we have several open-world space games now, from Rogue Star to Stellar Wanderer and very soon, this. When No Man's Sky drops I'm going to be a pig in $hit, life is good.

I did not realize the KickStarter ended way back in June 2012. Geez I've been keeping my eye on the PS4 version all this time. I can respect a small team taking on a big project and taking their time making it great but he really should have tried to get it released before No Man's Sky. That could change everything. Whatever happens, I'm still looking forward to both.

    Longest. Wait. Ever.

    • flashbackflip

Lol not really. The LONGEST wait would be Star Citizen XD

  • Gurney Halleck

Definitely been looking forward to this! Hoping it turns out to be worth the wait!

Looks amazing! Anyone who's played it, does it have cockpit view as well. Either way, getting it day one if my device can play it!

No cockpit view. In fact (as you can see) it's sort of a 2.5D game. That doesn't make it bad though! Just different, and hopefully works really well on the iPad. I've played it on Mac OS X but it's the type of game I would rather play on a tablet.
