Final Fantasy fanatics officially now have something super awesome to look forward to with the new year: This morning Square Enix quietly announced that Final Fantasy IX is coming to iOS, Android, and PC. It's surprising news considering there's been rumblings for the last decade or so that Squeenix lost the source code for Final Fantasy IX, and if that's true, this is likely just an emulated version of the original PlayStation game... Which is A-OK with me. Here's the trailer:

A lot of folks consider FF9 to be the best of the PlayStation-era Final Fantasy RPG's, but then again, people said that about FF7 and FF8. Whichever one you consider the "best," they're all great games, and definitely something to get excited for next year. According to the game's web site, you're going to need to have a reasonably recent iOS device running iOS 7.0 or later to play.

Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

Update: Shaun spotted some additional details inside of the FF Portal app: "With high-definition graphics, newly added achievements, auto-save, high speed mode, and several game boosting features, the game is easy to pick up and play no matter where you go." Awesome!

  • OrangutanKungfu

Oh no! I still haven't started FF Tactics or FF6! How am I going to squeeze this in too? Great news though.

    • MrThickDick

It'll probably be months before it comes out so you should have time.

      • walmartpolice

Doubt it's going to be that long.
FF7 on mobile arrived near instantaneously after its announcement and that needed you to be on IOS9 or some shit

  • scottsoapbox

    Ya! But what about FF8?

    • MrThickDick

That was my favorite PS1 FF.

    • mindseyes

Thought the same thing about8. Cause I know others liked it. I always would get so bored the first hour on 8 I gave is so many tries to, maybe once the fights started to happen it got good then running around at a school or whatever it was lol I lived number 7 and 9 both the best stories !!

      • mindseyes

        Liked not lived lol

    • Inaba-kun

FF8 was pretty weak. Miserably unappealing characters and battles dominated by unskippable summoning animations. It was a slog.

      • Agkelos

You weren't supposed to skip the summon animation since there is a battle mechanism that you can use o increase the power of your summon's attack, if I remember correctly.

    • Tezian Bryant

I'm surprised they flat out skipped it, figured 8 would be put on the App Store way before 9.

The public can say what they want about 8 but I really enjoyed it; Squall was all business, Zell always livened up the mood and Seifer was a pretty cool rival.

  • Poo

9 was the first FF I played and probably put 15-20 hours in and I don't remember enjoying any of it... What I've played of 7 I like a lot. FF Tactics and Battle Ogre are more my style.

    • ffaust

Anything like battle ogre on iOS other than ff tactics?

  • Psac42

That looks awesome. Never played this one.

    • androsynth

You really should. FFIX is a great game. I love it!

  • boydstr

Do you need to make a choice from a list of commands and the AI does the rest in FF IX in fighting sequences or is the fighting in realtime?
p.s Happy New Year to all

    • burningzenithx

Final Fantasy IX is a classic turned based Final Fantasy, so no real-time battles. Of course you the option to set battle system to active or wait. Active lets mobs attack you while you choose your commands and Wait essentially pauses the battle while you choose commands.

      • boydstr

        Thanks for your support.

    • coheedrocks27

It's the ATB SYSTEM just like in 7 and 8!

      • curtisrshideler

I wonder if the High Speed Mode that Eli mentioned in the update means we could have auto battles. I do like having that option to multi-task, but still be gaming, especially when I can set their actions.

      • burningzenithx

I know it's the ATB system, but that doesn't make it real-time.

      • boydstr

The problem is that I never played a FF game because I don't like the way how to steer a character, but there are so many people that have a positive view about the game series that I want too try it out and see for myself, but as I wrote earlier if it's done by pushing a button and the fight is done automatic it is not my thing
b.t.w I don't know how the ATB system is working,I will look at YouTube how it's working with FF7&8

Ugh fine. Here's more of my money

    • HelperMonkey

      Yeah, I know, right?
But It bothers me that Square Enix puts so little effort into polishing or optimizing these ports, and simply tosses them out there to cash in on them. I guess they feel that their fans, and jrpg fans in general, can be sold on name alone, so why bother?
I wonder if more gamers would buy in if they refined their product or tweaked their pricing a bit, but I guess Squeenix doesn't share my curiosity.

  • RinoaHeartily

My last ff is 8. Is 9 better than 7 or 8

    • DanKetch

      I liked 9 more than 8.

  • drageard

Best FF with Freya best waifu.

  • Alexythimia23

Lmao u will all laff but i only started playing ff games this year lol currently on ff7 which rocks now that im used to the UI setup, my god 2016 will be too epic for gaming. Its stuff like this that gives me hope we might get a great gaming catalogue of ports on all mobile devices. Cant wait for when a skyrim game comes our way....bethseda if you are listening pls start with morrowind?

    • Dankrio

      That would be pretty cool.

  • ineptidude

Achievement. Complete everything AND get Excalibur II.

    • Shiro

Ugh that was a PAIN. And no save scumming this time on iOS.

  • Keitch83

8 was my personal favourite after 6.Hope it's not being skipped permanently although I did enjoy 9.

  • Marvin

Final Fantasy IX has Vivi. That sells the game 100x over!

  • speedyph

  • unlimitedfury

Calling out those who say FF9 is childish. Existentialism in FF7 has been done to death by other games and the melodrama is unparalleled at times. Those who have played FF9 should remember and if they don't, is the Vivi story (particularly at Black Mage Village) is one of the finest points of the series.

    • Edwin Ramirez

      Who's calling this game childish?

  • Inaba-kun

Whilst I have a soft spot of sorts for FF12, I'd still say this is the last good Final Fantasy game. It looks beautiful, sounds wonderful, and has a fun story. It's fantastic. Assuming Square don't bungle the port, this will be a must buy. It would also be nice if this was a proper universal app with Apple TV support, but I suspect pigs will fly before Square will support the ATV.

  • curtisrshideler

FF7 was the first one I ever watched being played, but when I finally got a PS, FF9 was the first one I ever played. And this is the best news of... 2016?! It's probably got my favorite FF art style of the whole series. Can't wait to pay them to have this on my phone! It's already on my computer, console, and disc.

  • nkx

    Wow that's awesome news

  • tommyboy51

Super !! My favorite FF !

  • Montanx HS

Its a great game. Very much traditional like 4 but also newer age like 7 at the same time. Easy reccomend to any rpg fan who hasnt played it yet.

  • Cayjak

  • nkx

Dragon quest 7 3ds will prob come out

  • Rattyfus

I KNOW! Read this on the portal earlier! So thrilled, my favourite game of any kind ever. Hope they don't stuff it up.

  • eventide

Wow. Gonna have to buy this YET AGAIN.

  • Echoen

The dream is real. My favorite FF!

  • unexpect3rd

And the best part? This is the only one FF on the psOne I hadn't played. The speed up feature is god sent for my current gaming habit

  • one21gigawatts

    Holy shit. Hooooooly shit.

    Buying immediately.

  • MK

Excellent. I finished it on PS1 back in the day but would love to play it on mobile again. I just hope it doesn't use the FF7 controls (virtual PS1 controller). Should be touchscreen optimised like the other FF games on mobile.

  • smiffee666

    now the hardest part....waiting patiently!!

  • delirium38

Will buy it as soon they start updating their games more frequently.
In addition it would be nice to see them add a little more love to their ports.
The IOS version should be the best version,so it actually makes sense that it cost more the one I can play on my Vita and PS3

    • nkx

They actually have been updating their games all FF games work same with DQ. Only wish 2k and capcom would update theirs

  • Press2Play

Best and beat it 3 times love this game.

  • Gamer_Kev

FF9 is one of my favorite Final Fantasy games, the others being 6 and 12. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

  • Phillip Nicewaner

Yes! This is the one I have been waiting for. IX always reminded me of the classic FF days.

  • Jak Constantine

Good news. Odd that 8 isn't on IOS but on PC, but no remake of 1 & 2 on PC but on IOS. Then 10 & 10-2 is coming to PC soon. Ohh yeah and a new Kingdom Hearts coming to IOS.

  • lanstar

Amazing news, love this game. Been wanting to get back into some chocobo hot and cold! ๐Ÿ˜
Wonder if I'll be able to beat that secret marble boss this time... Eh, probably not but I'm game to try!

  • tex42

  • Zephram

Square is good at providing mfi controller support for FF games... I highly recommend the steelseries nimbus if you game on iPad... no clip tho for iphone and requires a lightning cable for charging (ipad air and above).

  • Bafi
