If at first you accidentally succeed, make sure you do your best to repeat that success. That is probably the story behind today’s announcement by Bethesda that it’s opened a new development studio in Montreal, Quebec to expand its development capabilities in mobile, PC, and console gaming. Bethesda Game Studios Montreal has a core team of more than 40 developers and plans to expand its presence in the mobile gaming world after it stumbled into huge success with Fallout Shelter (Free). If you haven’t been following mobile game news for the last few months, Fallout Shelter came out in June and quickly jumped to the top of the App Store, in the process making a buttload (an actual unit of measurement, look it up) of money to the surprise of almost everyone. It’s actually still in the Top 150 grossing games on the App Store even after all these months.
So, I’m not surprised at all that Bethesda is getting serious about mobile game development since it probably left a buttload (again, look it up) of money on the table because it couldn’t keep up with players’ desire for more and more frequent updates. That a game about a franchise adored by ‘hardcore’ gamers did great using a monetization model abhorred by said gamers shows one, what a surprise Fallout Shelter‘s success was for everyone and two, why Bethesda likely believes that with better planning, it can really establish a presence in mobile gaming. We should be getting Bethesda’s mobile CCG, Elder Scrolls: Legends, at some point next year, and it remains to be seen what else Bethesda has up its sleeve for mobile gaming.
