Backflip Studio’s ‘G.I. Joe Strike’ Hits the App Store

TouchArcade Rating:

Back in April, during the G.I. Joe-themed convention called GIJoeCon (yes that’s a real thing!), Backflip Studios announced that they were releasing a new mobile game utilizing the G.I. Joe IP, which is owned by Backflip’s parent company Hasbro. Corporate synergy! Anyway that game, titled G.I. Joe Strike (Free), has just released in the App Store. It’s actually a pretty awesome premise. You play as all-around bad ass ninja Snake Eyes in gameplay that’s extremely similar to One Finger Death Punch (Free) or Fatal Fight (Free). Basically, close-quarters twitch combat.

One of the interesting things about all of these twitch fighters is that they’re all free to play, but all offer a means of disabling some of the free to play chicanery by way of one-time IAP options. One Finger Death Punch in particular was very poorly received upon its initial mobile release, as the original PC version was a regular paid game, so the switch to free to play was jarring for fans. They later added an option to buy unlimited lives for ten bucks. Same too with Fatal Fight, which has an unlimited lives option for ten bucks.

Well, unsurprisingly, G.I. Joe Strike also has an unlimited energy IAP for $9.99. In all 3 cases there’s still some free to play-ness left to deal with after buying the unlimited options, like dual currencies and all that, but it’s nice that they include the options to disable energy meter-like mechanics. I can definitely deal with typical free to play grinding and currencies, but I can’t stand when I’m really enjoying a game and it forces me to stop due to an energy system.

So, if you’re a G.I. Joe fan and enjoy the close combat twitch fighters, definitely give G.I. Joe Strike a download and check it out for free.
