GDC 2015: ‘Bloxels’ is a Physical Level Editor for Digital Games

The folks at Pixel Press had a dream: Drawing levels in real life that they could beam into their very own video games. They achieved that dream with Pixel Press Floors (Free), which let you create platforming game levels on graph paper and import and play them by using your iOS device’s camera. They then brought that tech to a major IP with Adventure Time Game Wizard ($4.99). Now they are going a step further with their upcoming project Bloxels.

Bloxels is a physical board that lets you place various colored blocks onto its grid and create top-down dungeon crawler levels. The Bloxels system itself will be used for a variety of iOS games, the first of which is called B.R.A.V.E. Squad. Even in its early state, the whole idea works quite well, which you can see in our hands-on demonstration video.

The Bloxels kit is aiming for release this holiday season and will retail for around fifty dollars. As mentioned, it will work with multiple games, and Pixel Press stated that the digital games themselves will always be free with things like new skins being available as IAP. It’s definitely a neat idea and the tech works really well, so I’ll be anxious to see how the final product comes together when Bloxels releases later this year.
