I'm a sucker for good pixel art and goblins, so the upcoming Goblin Sword is managing to tickle two of my interests at once. The developers posted a thread on our forums yesterday, and it's been generating loads of interest. Here's the screenshots, with a trailer coming soon:

Details are pretty sparse beyond the feature list posted, but 48 levels with 6 bosses and tons of weapons, armor, and more to loot sounds pretty great. It's universal, and will have no IAP. Keep an eye out for Goblin Sword next week if everything goes well with Apple's approval.

    Gorgeous pixel art.

  • Speedster117

Looks like if dragon quest was an action playformer to me.

  • Leydz Boomshaka-Irwin

    YES! I want this NOW!!

  • Wedge598

I hate to rain on the parade but I'm starting to get tired of the retro 8-bit graphics. I love a good RPG now and again and I struggled to find one without retro graphics. I understand the nostalgia as I also grew up in the Atari/Nintendo age. But I'd like to see less pixels in today's games. Seems like as soon as we got the retina displays the pixel art craze hit the gaming market. I'd like to see more art like in Battleheart or The Nightmare Cooperative where the art is cartoony but the linework is sharp.

      Cool.

      • HelperMonkey

        Ooh! That swagger!
Every week is snark week for Eli.

      • NaeemTHM

Ugh...typical Eli. Guy gives his opinion on video games, and gets a douche bag response.

Eat a bag of dicks Eli.

      • http://toucharcade.com Eli Hodapp

I thought his opinion was cool, I'm enjoying this back og dicks though it's quite delicious. Thanks for commenting!

      • NaeemTHM

Try not to choke on them!

      • Wedge598

I did not take Eli's comment as derogatory. I actually though he appreciated my opinion. I was not trying to be trollish so I assumed by his comment that I didn't come off that way. I have nothing against the fans of the pixel art. And it can be endearing. I just like to see something a bit more modern. A mixture of simple art with a modern high resolution flare appeals to me more these days. I played low res games on my Atari and Nintendo for years growing up. Today I appreciate the high resolution displays and just prefer not to see pixels anymore. Just the thoughts of an older 45 yr old gamer.

      • Goggles789

        That was awesome Eli.

      • Themostunclean

Regardless of any possible hipster snark on Eli's part, that's just plain mean. Do you need a hug?

    • Bool Zero

Actually, this would be categorized as 32 bit, not 8 bit, you know since you seem to be such the resident expert of the era and all... I grew up in the 70's and early 80's as well, but with the advent of 3D came what some feel a loss of charm and style. Plus, a lot of people want to see the style coupled with today's advances in game design, depth, sensibilities and complexity. It's not like these developers are largely just recreating inspired games from the days if old, they are taking that classic and beautiful art style and applying it to much more deep and complex gameplay that wasn't possible for the era (in most cases). Those 32 bit backgrounds take a lot of work and artistry and there is nothing wrong with the art style as it truly has a timeless look to it that doesn't suffer from string the way 3D does. I can understand that they don't appeal to you personally but there is a demand and market for it.

      • Patricia Anaka

32 bit would be full color with alpha. I would say this is more 16-bit, as in 65K possible colors.

      • JPhilipp

Minus the joystick overlay, I'm counting 183 colors in one of those screenshots, which would make it fit into 256 colors, i.e. 8 bit.

Ok, I cheated by using a program to count the colors for me.

This art style is absolutely lovely, by the way.

      • OXMAN

He never claimed to be an expert, just offered his opinion! He makes a good point the market is flooded with a lot of pixel art RPGs and don't get me wrong I love that style aswell, but I would also like to see some more modern graphics on my modern iPhone 5s with retina display. No reason to be a douche to the man! Anyways, I will definatly be picking this game up next week!

      • Bool Zero

I wasn't being a douche, merely implying that there was a demand for it. If my reply felt insensitive or stepped on someone's feelings than that is yours or their interpretation and comes along with the nature of the internet and everyone reading just about everything in a negative tone when it doesn't agree with their opinion. My admitted snark was rather harmless and intentionally a jab, but nothing so vitriol filled to warrant being called a douche, least by someone it wasn't even directed toward. Also, let's not inflate the argument... It's not like there aren't a ton of 3D games that come out all the time for these devices. Every week we have a nice mix of minimalist and 3D modeled games. I think the split is rather fair and there are definitely plenty more games with "pretty" graphics, but they also bring along a higher price tag which leads to them not selling as well or getting the attention. You also have to consider that it may not be financially prudent or viable with the cost of either developing an in house engine or licensing one, or the fact that not all free engines may particularly be as mailable to ones intended design direction. In reality though, this is not an argument about graphics but rather style, which seems for the most part baseless. For example, if one doesn't like Mickey Boots, well there are a ton of other games just like it with a different art style. If folks don't like this particular game for its graphics, likewise, there are plenty of 3D, polygonal art directed games that can fill close to its niche of gameplay. 8, 16 and 32 bit styled games don't dominate the market so let's stops tilting the argument that they somehow are is the point!

      • Wedge598

No harm done. I appreciate your insight and you are correct in that this is clearly higher than 8-bit. I do see the charm in the pixel art. I like the Nimblebit games and really liked the art in Superbrothers: Swords and Sorcery. Just prefer to see the retina display at work is all.

    • Themostunclean

I've been an artist (traditional and digital) my entire life and I absolutely love this trend. You have to look at it from a more artistic perspective. The pixels are the medium and it's amazing to see the huge variety of style and expression that arises from such a basic set of tools. Also, the lower barrier for entry to the App Store allows creative people who may not have the access to the tools or the training for more advanced techniques to create something wonderful!

      • Wedge598

        Good points.

  • PoloBaquerizoH

    Looks beautiful!

  • ogomatic

    This looks really, really rad.

  • JCho133

This game is fantastic, some my favorite sprit work I've seen on iOS (up there with Wayward).

This is one of the few sidescrolling action-platformers that have really captured me on iOS. There's tons of content and secrets to find, and a cool quest/achievement system that seems like it'll be a lot of fun to complete.

  • thiagovscoelho

    pretty art

  • Goggles789

    This looks awesome.

  • Anotherkellydown

The screens caught my attention right away. Watch listed.

Yes, great looking game! I'd love to see all four seasons represented in the backgrounds, but either way, with no IAP... I'll be supporting this one!
