It’s no secret that Nintendo's Animal Crossing has been highly successful in its handled form, and the 3DS version was even out of stock for quite some time in Japan. It's curious then that we haven't yet seen a game quite like that on iOS. Stolen Couch Games thought that was strange too and they decided to create their own take on it. Castaway Paradise is everything you’d expect from a game of that genre. It features houses you can customize, a village to rebuild and plenty of activities like fishing, farming and bug-hunting. It’s also running real-time which means that special events will happen on certain days or at night. Today, Stolen Couch Games has released a new trailer showcasing the customization aspect. Take a look:

There’s still no release date for it yet, but Castaway Paradise has been available in Canada since the end of November of last year. A lengthy soft-launch should hopefully mean that all bugs will be squashed come launch day. It's iPad-only for right now, but an iPhone version is planned. If you want to download it yourself or if you want to check on some early impressions swing by the thread in our forums.

Looks rather impressive, here is to hoping it tops Animal Crossing experience.

  • clompah

Instead of animal crossing like shouldn't it be rougelike?

    • nini

      Maybe Zelda-like.

  • Earth Vs. Me

Looks like they get their ideas the same way they get their couches. Zing!

We're not hiding where we got our inspiration from. Animal Crossing is a great game, and we're bringer a similar experience to all devices. I hope you'll try it out.

      • Earth Vs. Me

Don't mind me, I just enjoy being snarky: if I had an iPad I'd definitely check it out. I thought Oceanhorn was well worth the money, so I'm not actually opposed to "-alike" games.

Excited for the planned iPhone release

Question for the developers, out of plain ol' curiosity: did you use a particular library/engine to make Castaway Paradise?

    • Eric Diepeveen

Unity + our own framework on top 🙂

      • MrXax

        Thank you kindly!

Seabeard looks so much better. And freemium is totally not the formula of AC.

    • Nekku

I just saw the seabeard trailer and it looks indeed stunning! Didn't even know about this game yet. Thanks!

  • audiotaku

I'm really looking forward to this one. AC was one of my favourite games on three generations of Nintendo consoles. Hopefully this'll be worth of an epic iPhone original title. Can the dev shine any light on IAP strategy? Or will it be a one time fee?

Any ETA on the worldwide release? I understand that it takes time to squash the bugs and get the game running smoothly and I'm really excited for this. Been waiting years for something like Animal Crossing to come to iOS and I'm hoping this will be a great title.

I'm downloading it now from the Australian Store. I just clicked on your link and it took me to the Australian store version. Didn't know it was out here.

I'll just wait for the Nintendo Animal Crossing for iOS & Android.
